Galvanometer

This document discusses galvanometers, including their purpose, types, main parts, and how they work. Galvanometers measure small electrical currents by converting electrical energy into mechanical energy through the deflection of a moving coil within a magnetic field. The main types are D'Arsonval galvanometers, which use a coil and magnetic torque proportional to current, and ballistic galvanometers, which measure total charge. The main parts are a moving coil, suspension, torsion head, and permanent magnet. Galvanometers can be converted to ammeters by adding a low resistance wire in parallel or voltmeters by adding a high resistance wire in series.

Galvanometer
= Instrument for measuring a small electrical current or a
function of the current by deflection of a moving coil.
= Electrical energy into mechanical energy.
= Voltage or for measuring their magnitude.

 Current
 Coil
 Magnetic field
 Magnetic torque
>Torque is proportional to the current
>For instance 100 microamperes full
scale ( with a voltage drop of say 50
millivolts at full current)
Ballistic Galvanometer
Designed to deflect its indicating needle (or mirror) in a way
that is proportional to the total charge passing through its
moving coil or to a voltage pulse of short duration
Conventional Galvanometer
 But the latter has smaller torque and higher inertia in the
coil.
Main parts of galvanometer

1.Moving coil
2.Suspension
3.Torsion Head
4.Permanent Magnet
