EE103 Problem Set 3

The document provides instructions and problems for EE103 Problem Set 3. Students are asked to: 1) Solve for the line current in line c given line voltages and load impedances. 2) Solve for phase currents, line currents, power of each load, and total power given line-to-line voltages and impedances. 3) Calculate the power of a three-phase system given the phase b voltage and phase a current. 4) Find the line current Ib for a three-wire system given line voltages and two phase currents. 5) Determine line currents using KVL, power of each load, and total power for an unbalanced wye-connected load system.

EE103 Problem Set 3

General Instructions:
 Write all your answers in a short bond paper.
 Use only black ink pen.
 Show all the details of your solution, including circuit diagrams.
 Box your final answer.

1. Given the following line voltages and two load impedances

Vab = 117∠0° V Zac = 5+j12 ohms
Vbc = 117∠240° V Zbc = 13+0 ohms
Vca = 117∠120° V
Solve for the line current in line c.

2. Given the following data:

Line to line voltage: 240 V
Zab = 6+j8 ohms
Zbc = 5+j8.88 ohms
Zca = 10+j0 ohms

Assume line voltage Vab as the reference phasor in ACB sequence. Solve for the
following:
 Phase currents
 Line currents
 Power of each load
 Total power

3. The phase b line voltage and the phase a line current of a balanced three-phase system
are V=220 sin(wt + 210°) and I=10 sin(wt - 30°), respectively. What is the power of the
system?
4. Paner Distillery Inc., which is located at Cabuyao, Laguna, is supplied by a three-phase
3-wire system with the following characteristics:
Vab = 230∠0° V Ia = 110∠-36.87° A
Vbc = 230∠240° V Ic = 125∠53.13° A
Find the line current Ib

5. Given a balanced three-wire, three-phase system serving an unbalanced wye-

connected load. Determine the following:
Vab = 210∠0° V Zan = 10 ohms
Vbc = 210∠120° V Zbn = 10+j10 ohms
Vca = 210∠240° V Zcn = j10 ohms
a. Line currents (using KVL)
b. Power of each load
c. Total power
