CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Teaching is complex. It is not easy. It is more complicated. Teachers must be equipped
with much knowledge and wisdom in imparting and transmitting ideas and information among
their pupils. Knowledge and wisdom should be together. Teachers should encourage our pupils
to develop “critical and creative thinking” and problem –solving skill and to be the best they can
be in all aspects of their lives.
The objective of teaching and learning, learning and teaching is that the process of the
academic performance or achievement of every learners in a given task or lesson being taught by
the teacher. The academic achievement may refer to the assessment of teachers based on the
academic criterion. To meet the objective, several factors and teaching strategies must apply and
develop.
Teachers are dealing with pupils at most of their times. Eight subjects have been taught
daily with diverse learners. At the end of their every lesson, evaluation takes place to determine
how many pupils cope with the lesson and how many pupils need intervention. Pupils under
remediation need further attention. They need several activities to cope with the lesson. These
are some of the problem might encounter by the teachers in dealing with diverse learners.
Different teaching strategies can be answered the problems using differentiated activities
and instruction. Cooperative learning must also observe among pupils and the possible effects of
peer instruction must be considered.
Today, the method of teaching has been changing to modern teaching method. The
teachers who are using modern teaching method usually teach professionally to their pupils
(Cruz et al.2015). The modern teacher considers each child to grow according to its abilities and
aptitudes (Good 2003). He realizes that to teach is to nourish or cultivate the growing child or to
give him intellectual exercises or to train him in the horizontal sense of directing or guiding his
growth.
Cooperative Learning has been defined as teaching methods that involve pupils in
learning process in order to understand and learn content of the subject (Slavin 2011). It is a
situation in a situation in which there is a positive interdependence among pupils’ goal
attainment, therefore pupil perceive that they can only reach goals if all the members of the
group achieve the learning goals as well (Johnson and Johnson, 1994).
Cooperative learning has been related to concepts collaborative learning or group
learning. Collaborative learning (Dilenbourg, 1999) is that it is a situation in which two or more
people learn something together. On the other hand, group learning is the physical placement of
pupils into groups and the usage of specific instructional strategies for the purpose of learning
(Lou et al., 1996).
Learning can be enhanced through social interactions and collaboration with others on
instructional tasks.Vygotsky believed that learning takes place when children are working within
what we called their “zone of proximal development” in which a child have trouble solving
problem alone but can succeed with the help of someone knowledgeable.
Traditional teaching or teacher-centered learning can prevent educational growth
(Duckworth, 2009).Pupils become passive learners. They have no control about their learning.
The teachers are making all the decision including the method of teaching and the type of
assessment to be given.
Traditional class activities create a win-win situation, where one can only succeed if other
loose while cooperative learning is direct opposite to it. Cooperative learning has edge over other
teaching methods in terms of its effectiveness for improve cognition, social skills and
motivation.
In a Learners-centered based instruction, pupils have the greater participation with
regards to their learning output. The pupils have their own learning in their own style of
acquiring it. It focuses on the way pupils learn, not on the way how teachers teach. Cooperation,
collaboration and group effort must be applied to cope the teaching objective.
Statement of the problem
This study aims to determine the effect of Cooperative Learning in the Academic
Performance of the Grade VI Pupils of La Concepcion College Inc. Specifically, this research
will answer the following questions:
1. What is the demographic profile of the Grade VI pupils of La Concepcion College Inc. in
terms of:
1.1 Sex
1.2 Age
1.3 Parent’s Educational Attainment
1.3.1 Father
1.3.2 Mother
2. What are the types of the cooperative learning that the grade VI of La Concepcion Inc.
knows?
2.1 Jigsaw I and II
2.2 Student/(Pupil) Learning Teams (SLT)
2.3 Student (Pupil) Teams Achievement Division (STAD)
2.4 Teams- Game Tournament ( TGT)
3. What are the types of cooperative learning being used by the grade VI of La Concepcion
College Inc.?
4. Is there a significance relationship between the profile of Grade VI pupils of La
Concepcion College Inc. and the effect of cooperative learning in the academic
performance of the grade VI pupils?
5. Is there a significance difference between the effect of lecture-based approach and the
effect of cooperative learning among Grade VI pupils of La Concepcion College Inc.?
Objectives in conducting this study
This study has the following objectives:
1. To identify the types of cooperative learning being used by the grade VI pupils of La
Concepcion College Inc.?
2. To determine the effect of lecture based instruction in the academic performance of the
Grade VI pupils of La Concepcion College Inc.?
3. To determine the effect of cooperative learning in the academic performance of the Grade
VI pupils of La Concepcion College Inc.?
4. To compare the effect of lecture based instruction and cooperative learning in the
academic performance among the Grade VI pupils of La Concepcion College Inc.?
Hypothesis
There is no significance relationship between the demographic profile of the grade VI
pupils of La Concepcion College Inc. and the effect of cooperative learning in the academic
performance of the grade VI pupils of La Concepcion College Inc.?
There is no significance difference on the lecture based instruction among Grade VI
pupils between the cooperative learning on their academic performance.
Significance of the study
The result of the study is to show the Effects of Lecture Based instruction and
Cooperative Learning Instruction among the Grade VI pupils of La Concepcion College Inc.
The researchers believe that the result of the study would be beneficial to the school
administrators, teachers, parents and future researchers.
To the school administrator, it will provide opportunities for them to supervise teaching
strategies of the teachers to improve teaching skills using differentiated instruction.
To the teachers, the information on the effect of cooperative learning will be used as a
teaching aid to attain mastery of the lesson being taught.
To the parents, it will provide idea of different instructional activities suited for their
children for remediation and learning intervention at home.
To the future researchers, the result of the study will give insights and ideas on the effect
of cooperative learning among grade VI pupils. They can use the idea of the study for
comparison purpose.
Scope and Limitation
The research is about the effect of cooperative learning in the academic performance of
the Grade VI-pupils of La Concepcion College Inc. at Kaypian Campus.
Definition of terms
The following terms are use in the study and clearly defined and interpret by the
researchers.
Cooperative Learning. An instructional arrangement in which small groups or teams of students
work together to achieve team success in a manner that promotes the pupils responsibility for
their own learning as well as the learning of others (Mercer &Mercer, 2001).
Traditional Lecture Based Approach. This is a learning process whereby students work
independently in their quest to achieve their academic obligation. Teachers deal with pupil
independent in enhancing their academic success (British Psychological Society)
Academic Performance. It is the extent to which a pupil, teacher or institution has achieved
their short or long term educational goal.
Jigsaw. A Typical jigsaw activity involves pupils to becoming experts then teaching their group
about what they have learn. The “expert” is responsible for teaching their team mates about their
topic of study. The teacher then provides support by listening to the following discussions,
noting difficulties or providing more in-depth knowledge (Koppes, 2002).
Student/Pupil Learning Team. The team goals are achieved when each member achieved
selected academic achievement.
Student/Pupil Team Achievement Division. It is where pupils work together to learn and
responsible for their team mates learning as well as their own and take individual quizzes to test
for learning.
Teams-Games Tournament. It is where the pupil work together in groups and responsible for
the team mates learning as well as their own and compete in tournaments against other teams to
test for learning.
