History of Archery

Early History
❖ Early bows were self bows
➢ Made of a single piece of wood, rather than the design of bows later prefered, multiple pieces
of wood glued together
❖ The sport of archery is about 20,000 years old
❖ Around 3500 bc, the ancient egyptians established the bow as a weapon
❖ Bows were used in battle
Later History
❖ The Civil War used the bow and arrow as a main weapon
❖ The English adopted the bow as their major weapon
➢ They improved the bow to create a more stable and better designed weapon
What was Archery used for?
❖ The bow and arrow was used for hunting
➢ So humans could survive
❖ Used in battles and wars as a main weapon
❖ Now played as a sport in the olympics and by anyone
Olympics
❖ Archery became an official olympic sport in the 1900’s at the Paris world Olympics
❖ Archery became a less popular sport in the 1920’s
❖ It was only held as an event if it was popular in the hosting country that year
Archery Today
❖ New materials such as carbon have led to a lighter and faster moving arrow
❖ In order to shoot with great accuracy, archers use modern equipment
❖ Thousands of people use archery today as a great way to spend time while playing a
sport
➢ It is played by any age, gender, and anyone with disabilities
Form
❖ Stance
➢ Position your side toward the target and align your feet to keep weight even
➢ Stand straight and square to target
➢ Nock arrow against the nock locator and keep index feather towards
❖ Draw, Anchor, and Aim
➢ Set bow hand, then draw hand and place one finger above and two fingers below
the arrow
➢ Raise bow towards arrow and rotate bow elbow down
➢ Relax hand and draw hand flat and move draw elbow down
➢ Align string and arrow shaft and level bow and tighten back muscles
➢ Maintain relaxed bow and draw hands and count to 3
❖ Release and Follow-Through
➢ Relax the draw hand to release string and draw elbow pulls back on release string
➢ Draw hand finishes over rear shoulder
Shooting Safety
❖ Want to make sure that equipements fit properly
➢ If it isn't it can be dangerous to you and others around you because t can cause you to shoot
unsafely
➢ Make sure that the equipment isn't broken
❖ Check clothing/accessories
➢ If anything can get in your hands while making the shot it can be dangerous
❖ Make sure that you are paying attention when you have the archery equipment in your
hands
