LESSON PLAN #5: Doctor Dodgeball

Instructional Objectives:
Knowledge:
Students will understand that to play a game with their classmates they need to abide to
the rules and expectations set out by the teacher
Skill:
Students will demonstrate an ability to throw, catch and dodge the balls within the game
Students will demonstrate an ability to control their bodies and be aware of their
surroundings
Key Questions:
What is the focus question for this lesson? What are some related questions?
How do we play doctor dodgeball? How do we play Jedi dodgeball? Can we identify and
celebrate leaders and cooperative students in our class?
Materials:
Dodgeballs, pinnies, pool noodles, Hula Hoops
Preparation:
None for this lesson
Adaptations:
Switch doctor/Jedi every 3 minutes, or shortly after getting hit to keep flow of game and
students engaged
Lesson Procedure:
1. Before heading to gym explain to students that their warmup will be running 3
laps around the gym starting with the direction of the stage when they first enter
2. Gather students in center circle of gymnasium to explain the activity- doctor
dodgeball
3. Go over rules of the game
- Explain how we will be playing
- What are the rules for going down in doctor dodgeball?
- Check for student understanding and if there are any questions- thumbs
up/thumbs down
- Explain that students will be given a 5 second countdown to choose a new
doctor or else teacher will get to choose
- Talk about overhand and underhand throws
- Tell students to look for classmates who were doing a good job of working
hard, cooperating with others, and playing by the rules of the game

4. Reiterate expectations of playing in the gym and being respectful of the rules of
the game and their classmates
5. Ask students to get into straight line along middle line in order to distinguish
teams
- Point to wall of gym in which students will go to for making teams
- Ask students to stand quietly on the wall in which they have been assigned
until all students are given a team
- Teacher will pick first person to be doctor based on behavior throughout the
day- specifically listening and following directions skills and standing quietly
along the wall
6. Play the game
- Switch the doctor every few minutes or soon after doctor gets hit
- Give advantages to teams that listen better without distraction and bickering
over the changing of the doctor
- Freeze the game periodically if volume has gotten too loud or if needing to
clear up rules/ potential “cheating” or misunderstanding of the rules
7. Yell “FREEZE”- cleanup materials and get in a line by the doors to head back for
math class
8. While in line ask students- “who was a leader in playing fair, and cooperating
with others in class today, and why do you think that?”
IF TIME SWITCH GAME TO JEDI DODGEBALL
1. Ask students to place dodgeballs back in the center of the gym and be seated
in a circle around the teacher on far side wall of the gym
2. Explain that we will be switching the game
- Ask another adult in the gym to get 2 Hula-hoops and 2 pool noodles
- What are the rules?
- Reiterate expectations
- Ask students to return to their sides- teacher will pick first Jedi
3. Play the game- switching Jedi every 3 minutes or once one teams Jedi gets
eliminated
4. Yell “FREEZE”- cleanup materials and get in a line by the doors to head back
for math class
Assessment:
Formative
1. Student ability to follow directions and instructions provided by teacher through
observation during setup and playing time
2. Student ability to participate in the game and cooperate/share with their
classmates through observation during playing time and class discussion at the
end of class
3. Student ability to abide by, and respect the rules of the game through observation
during playing time
