Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
Having a flipped classroom activity is an easy way to get the class involved in studying and reviewing at home.
It is also a great way to get parents involved. Viewing my blog and listening to the podcast can be done on
almost any electronic device which is awesome when listening to this at home. This lesson gave students the
opportunity to learn at home and come into the classroom prepared and excited. I also have a transcript so if we
have a family that is ELL they could translate my podcast and get the dame information. As a teacher, I will
also know who completed the activity and who did not when they come into class the next day.
Lesson idea implementation:
The purpose of this assignment is a flipped classroom which is an instructional strategy that delivers
instructional content, often online, outside of the classroom. Before the ending of class students will be told to
look at our class blog and listen to the audio and their assignment will be explained there. I will have recording
telling my students to observe time patterns (day to night and night to day) and objects (sun, moon, stars) in the
day and night sky. Students will spend the weekend recording what they notice about the day. Students will
record their findings in a journal, along with pictures. Parent help will be required. This should not take longer
than 1 hour at home, but they will need to observe day time and night time so this should happen over the
course of the weekend. When the students come into class on Monday they all should have some sort of
knowledge about time patterns. We will start the lesson by going outside together and each student will record
in their journal what they see. Then as a class we will have a discussion about time patterns and compare our
findings. We will then watch a short video on time patterns. After we will have an interactive game on the
white board. We will have a Venn diagram on the board with day, night, and both. Under the Venn diagram
there will be pictures that you can drag into the diagram that include; the sun, moon, stars, clouds, rain, birds,
bats, etc. This activity will give me a better understanding on who is struggling and who is exceeding. After I
will have each student will draw a picture on their observation journal of either night or day, along with objects
that correlate.
After each student has finished their journal I will take pictures of each journal and upload them to our blog,
with parent permission. This way students can view other work for extra help and parents can be more involved
in what their child is learning and progressing. I can extend this lesson by having the students do a science by
using a globe and a flash light. I will mark where we are on the globe, and the flashlight will represent the sun.
I will show the children why the sun and moon come out and how the earth turns. I could also have the students
act out a scenario where each student is a different object like the sun, moon, star, rain, clouds, etc. To
Classroom Blog and Website Creation Tools
differentiate learning I can have the children draw their pictures on an iPad or tablet, and do their journals
electronically. Students that struggle to understand time patterns will have activities to work on for better
understanding.
Importance of technology:
Using a website-creation tool is critical to this project. I used Edublogs to create my blog where I posted an
audio message to my students. I also used technology to edit my podcast, and students need technology to view
my blog and listen to the podcast. This projected could have been completed without technology by just telling
students what to do in class before they went home for the day. Without the technology students may forget
what to do, or their parents may not know how to help them properly. Students also will not be able to post
their findings for their classmates to see.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
Internet safety and student privacy is very important to consider when uploading items from your classroom
online. While creating this lesson plan I had to consider how I would ensure the privacy of my students. I want
to upload their work to my blog but before I do so I need to either make my page private or make sure there is
absolutely no personal information uploaded. Before uploading anything online you need to be very careful on
what information you are putting up. If a teacher puts too much information about where the school is, what
grade they teach, children’s pictures and names, this can be a real safety issue. Before uploading pictures of
students, you always need to get parent permission. Some parents do not want their child’s picture because of
safety concerns. It is always best to make what your uploading private to anyone that is not a parent. This
ensures safety for everyone. We also need to be careful when we are letting children on the internet. We should
not let them do an open search on Google. As a teacher, we should be monitoring what our students are doing
online. To alleviate any fear by parents and administrator’s by giving student’s options on what sites and
pictures they can use. Also, we can invite parents into the classroom to show them what their child is working
on so they know that it is indeed safe. It is very important to follow internet safety policies at all times to keep
our children safe.
Reflective Practice:
After designing this lesson idea, I believe that the activities I have created can impact student learning in a very
positive light. Having a flipped classroom activity gives parents and their child an opportunity to work
together. Studies have shown that parent involvement in the classroom leads to higher student participation!
Parent involvement in school can also help build positive interactions between themselves, their child and the
teacher. Some parents also can feel out of the loop when it comes to their child’s curriculum. This project gave
them the perfect opportunity to learn more. The project was also great extra practice for the children outside of
the class. In the classroom I am in, parents do not work with their children at home enough. I designed this idea
as an introductory activity to the unit. To extend this lesson adding more activities with the science behind time
patterns. I could use more online games and interactive software’s for more practice and understanding.
