Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Programs in

Schools Assisted By the Office of Overseas Schools
The list of overseas schools offering AP and/or IB courses is compiled from information available in the Office of
Overseas Schools. The information may change from year to year and is by no means conclusive. Therefore, the list
should be used only as a starting point in your search. Prospective users of the schools may wish to inquire further of
A/OPR/OS at OverseasSchools@state.gov, tel.: 202-261-8200, or to contact the school directly for more specific and
up-to-date information regarding curriculum.

College Board Advanced Placement Courses
The College Board is a mission-driven not-for-profit organization that connects students to college success and
opportunity. Founded in 1900, the College Board was created to expand access to higher education. Today, the
membership association is made up of over 6,000 of the world’s leading educational institutions and is dedicated to
promoting excellence and equity in education. Each year, the College Board helps more than seven million students
prepare for a successful transition to college through programs and services in college readiness and college success —
including the SAT and the Advanced Placement Program. The organization also serves the education community through
research and advocacy on behalf of students, educators and schools.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:: https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/home

There are more than 30 AP courses, each one of which connects directly to a wide variety of college majors and careers.
For example, if you’re thinking about law enforcement, did you know that it might help to take AP Psychology? Or that,
if you want to be a sociologist, AP Statistics could be a good first step? AP courses also help you transform the subjects
you’re enthusiastic about into a fulfilling future. If you’re into studying languages, taking one in AP could help you in
everything from a college major in languages to a career in Anthropology, Ethnic Studies, or Fashion Design.

Stand Out in College Admissions: Deciding to take an AP course lets colleges and universities know that you have what it
takes to succeed in an undergraduate environment. When admissions officers see “AP” on your transcript, they know that
what you experienced in a particular class has prepared you well for the challenges of college. Taking AP is a sign that
you’re up for the most rigorous classes your high school has to offer.

Earn College Credits: By taking an AP course and scoring successfully on the related AP Exam, you can save on college
expenses: most colleges and universities nationwide offer college credit, advanced placement, or both, for qualifying AP
Exam scores. These credits can allow students to save college tuition, study abroad, or secure a second major. AP can
transform what once seemed unattainable into something within reach.

Check out specific colleges’ guidelines on accepting AP scores for credit and placement by searching our AP Credit
Policy database.

Skip Introductory Classes: If you already know your preferred college major, taking a related AP course and earning a
qualifying score on the AP Exam can help you advance and avoid required introductory courses – so you can move
directly into upper-level classes and focus on the work that interests you most.

Even taking an AP Exam unrelated to your major – whether or not you know what you want to major in – can place you
beyond your college’s general education requirements. This opens up additional time on your schedule, enabling you to
do a second major or minor, take exciting electives, or pursue additional interests.

Build College Skills: Taking an AP course builds the skills you'll need throughout your college years. You give your mind
a rigorous workout while polishing up your time management and study skills. You also get better at handling challenging
issues and problems, with the support of your AP teachers. AP courses let you know what to expect during the next phase
of your educational journey, and help you build the confidence to succeed.

* Some schools only offer a limited number of AP courses which can vary from year to year.
AP Capstone
AP Capstone™ is a College Board program that equips students with the independent research, collaborative teamwork,
and communication skills that are increasingly valued by colleges. It cultivates curious, independent, and collaborative
scholars and prepares them to make logical, evidence-based decisions.

AP Capstone is comprised of two AP courses — AP Seminar and AP Research — and is designed to complement and
enhance the discipline-specific study in other AP courses. Participating schools can use the AP Capstone program to
provide unique research opportunities for current AP students, or to expand access to AP by encouraging students to
master the argument-based writing skills that the AP Capstone program develops.

Benefits of AP Capstone:
 Fosters the research, argumentation, and communication skills that are at the core of college readiness and
essential for lifelong learning
 Provides a setting to build on the knowledge and rigorous course work of AP in an interdisciplinary format
 Offers students a unique opportunity to distinguish themselves to colleges and universities
 Builds professional excellence through participation in an intensive, weeklong collaborative professional
development institute
 Offers a flexible curricular content model with room for creativity and student input
 Affords schools and districts the distinction of offering a rigorous, widely recognized diploma program
 Helps identify students who are prepared to enter college with the research, writing, and collaboration skills
necessary for successful college completion
 Provides consistent, externally validated measures of student ability
 Demonstrates student research and writing abilities through a 5,000-word scholarly research paper

AP Capstone was developed in response to feedback from higher education. The two AP Capstone courses, with their
associated performance tasks, assessments, and application of research methodology, require students to:
 Analyze topics through multiple lenses to construct meaning or gain understanding.
 Plan and conduct a study or investigation.
 Propose solutions to real-world problems.
 Plan and produce communication in various forms.
 Collaborate to solve a problem.
 Integrate, synthesize, and make cross-curricular connections.

* Some schools only offer a limited number of AP courses which can vary from year to year.

International Baccalaureate Organization
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: http://www.ibo.org/

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Program (DP) is an assessed program for students aged 16 to 19. It is
respected by leading universities across the globe.

Through the DP, schools are able to develop students who:

 have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge
 flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically
 study at least two languages
 excel in traditional academic subjects
 explore the nature of knowledge through the program’s unique theory of knowledge course.

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Program (DP) centers on the DP core. Three components make up the
core, which are studied alongside individual subjects and throughout a student’s time in the DP. These components
provide a framework for the study of individual subjects.

The DP organizes teaching and learning through six subject groups, underpinned by the DP core. Students choose a
course from within each subject group. For most courses, students take written examinations at the end of the DP. In many
program areas, students complete externally assessed coursework.

The DP core aims to broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills.
The three core elements are:
 theory of knowledge, in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to
know
 the extended essay, which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper
 creativity, activity, service, in which students complete a project related to those three concepts.

The six subject groups are:

 Studies in language and literature
 Language acquisition
 Individuals and societies
 Sciences.
 Mathematics
 The arts.
 There are different courses within each subject group.
Students choose courses from the subject groups: studies in language and literature; language acquisition; individuals and
societies; sciences; mathematics; and the arts. Students may opt to study an additional sciences, individuals and societies,
or languages course, instead of a course in the arts.

Students will take some subjects at higher level (HL) and some at standard level (SL). HL and SL courses differ in scope
but are measured according to the same grade descriptors, with students expected to demonstrate a greater body of
knowledge, understanding and skills at higher level. Each student takes at least three (but not more than four) subjects at
higher level, and the remaining at standard level. Standard level subjects take up 150 teaching hours. Higher level
comprises 240 teaching hours.
