Aircraft Design and Manufacturing Techniques (AE 852) Report Contents

The document outlines the report requirements for an aircraft design course. It requires students to submit the report in two phases. Phase 1 involves outlining the design objectives, specifying a benchmark aircraft, drawing initial sketches of the design, and selecting an engine or airfoil. It also requires a chapter on manufacturing techniques. Phase 2 involves detailed calculations for aerodynamics, structures, performance and providing revised drawings with dimensions. Students must show calculation work in Excel or Matlab and iterate designs to meet objectives. The report also requires a final section on manufacturing techniques.

Aircraft Design and manufacturing techniques (AE 852)

Report contents:
Phase 1 ( To be submitted on 8th April 2019)

Aircraft Design:

 Mention primary design objectives and other basic design objectives

 Specifications of benchmark aircraft based of your design objectives
 Based on conceptual design draw sketches of baseline configuration (Orthographic views)
o Sketches must be neatly drawn with proportion to the actual dimensions (
dimensions not required)
o Drawing can be made in any CAD software or by hand in an A3 size drawing sheet.
 A description/calculation/selection of specific engine, airfoil, or any special add on of how
you are planning achieve the primary design objectives must be given.

Manufacturing techniques:

 Make a separate chapter with the contents based on the covered topics and lab visit by Prof.
S. Bhaumik

Phase 2 ( To be submitted on 18th April 2019)

 Provide detailed calculation of

o Aerodynamics of wing (Lift, drag, pitching moments etc)
o Tail sizing, cg location,
o Power requirements/ engine selection, propeller selection,
o Landing gear etc.
 Screen shots of MS EXCEL sheets, Matlab plots should be given. If any result is not
favourable, iterations should be done in order to meet the design objectives or safety
criteria. Details of all iterations must be included with screen shots and a short description.
 Final revised drawing to be given in (Orthographic views) with proper dimensions. (Drawing
can be made in any CAD software or by hand in an A3 size drawing sheet.)

Manufacturing techniques:

 Final revision/ if anything to add
