the Experiences of Cockfighters

The research study aimed to discover and describe the lived experiences of the

participants that are participating in cockfight event in Camansi, Barangay Badas,

City of Mati.

This phenomenology research involved 10 participants that are based on

our criteria being set. Aside from that, are conducting an individual interview in

order for us to gather the needed data.

Results revealed that cockfighting is gambling on where cockfighters putting a

bet in their chosen team.

Their reason for participating cockfighting is to have fun. Meanwhile, their insight

in cockfighting being helpful as well as it is risky. it is helpful if they win but it is

risky if they lose. The result of the study proved that cockfighting is the game of

risk.

INTRODUCTION

‘The first thing that the communists do

when they take over the country is to

outlaw cockfighting’

(John Monk)

It means that, if someone could control their country the first thing he

could do was to outlaw cockfighting. For them to have the freedom to do

cockfighting and made their self-satisfaction. If that would happen, there was a

big possibility that the people would be involved in cockfighting specifically the

men.

In Camansi, Barangay Badas, City Mati cockfighting was not new, it is

because most of the men here experienced this kind of gambling. If there was

someone could outlaw the cockfighting then the cockfighters can make their

moves to have a game which they could choose their own team and bet for it. If

they have their freedom to do cockfighting, they don’t care about the

consequences they may face in doing it but they just focus on the game and wait

for the result.

Background of the Study

Cockfighting is a sport that sets the Gamecocks in battle (Lewis, n.d.).

In America, cockers utilize the most elevated quality feed, for instance, they

require more space since they don't trim every one of their winged creatures into
small pens. There is a little money related reward for the work and that is the

thing that a genuine cockfighter does. (Zarley, 2015).

In Mexico, cockfighting was known where every town in some of the states

has their cockpits. Gambling was a major aspect of the event on where

cockfighters tend to put a bet as much as $40,000 on a single bout (APAB,

2018).

Moreover, this recreation became also famous in India on where it's for a

part of regional variation on the Makar Sankranti. Every fight changed into a big

cash affair. In spite of being illegal, many cockfighters are nevertheless violating

the law. Big amounts of cash are involved in this event (Slater, 2019).

However, the Indian tribal nation ought to enjoy their very own rights and

laws of their own lands and Kiowa is one of the Indian tribes on wherein

cockfighting is their cultural right in order that the Kiowa people have the free will

to gamble at cockfighting. Two handlers conserving colorful gamecocks input the

arena and the crowds at the Bayou membership in Vinton, Louisiana and start

yelling to their bets. To the center of the pit, a small, sandy coliseum surrounded

with a wire fence and Plexiglas (Hawley, 1982).

The appreciation of cockfight on the Philippines became additionally

expressed inside the following sarcastic phrase: "when a Filipino house catches

fireplace, he first rescues his cock, then his wife, after which his children." This

found out that cockfighting is number one masculine area within the Philippines.

And there may be added some reality in the phrase that cocks are actual

competitors of Philippine better halves (Bethge, 2002).

In Cabuyao, Laguna, cockfighting is a way of life. In the central city of

Cabuyao, you could see many men protectively holding their roosters

(Almendral, 2015).

In the locality of Camansi, Brgy. Badas City of Mati, we observed that

there has been an existence of cockfighting during occasions such as fiesta in

which derbies last for four days before the celebrations.

With that, we need to study cockfighting to know their lived experiences as

well as their reasons for participating cockfighting.

Purpose Statement

The purpose of this phenomenology was to discuss the lived experiences

of cockfighters involved in cockfighting. We chose cockfighting as our topic for a

reason that it is rampant nowadays and for us to know the insights of

cockfighters in participating cockfighting.

Research Questions

This research paper has different questions

Central question:

What are the reasons for cockfighters in being involved in cockfighting?

Sub-questions:

1. What is cockfighting for the participants?

2. What are their reasons for participating in cockfighting?

3. What are their insights in cockfighting?

Scope and Limitations

The research focused only on the people who are married and

participated cockfighting within five years and above who are residents of

Barangay Badas. Our questions to be asked are connected to the topic of the

lived experiences of cockfighters. The participants would be able to answer the

questions based only on their experiences and perceptions.

According to Creswell (1998), he recommends that phenomenological

research 5-25 participants while as suggested by Morse (1994) participants

should be at least six people it depends on the saturation stage.

With that, this research involved 10 participants where they experience

cockfight gambling. The participants lived at Camansi, Badas City of Mati.

The study started in November 2018 and ended in March 2019.

Definition of Terms

The terms used in the research are operationally defined as;

Cockfighting – an activity that needs luck in order for you to win. It was an

event that occurs in Barangay during occasions such as Fiestas or Araw.

Cockfighters – the one who put a bet in his/her chosen team and participate in

cockfight gambling.

Cockfight – an organized fight between two cocks fighting to each other.

Game of risk – a game that leads you to a win or loses situations on where a

cockfighter put an amount of money to his/her chosen team and just wait for the

result.
Significance of the study

Research is made not just to gather information but is to address the

problem and provide conclusions as well as solutions through the point of views

and opinions of the participants and rest that get involved in this study. It could

deliver relevant information to the individuals through their betterment.

This research may help the following:

To the cockfighters, to have a realization of what they engaged in terms of their

opinions shared upon this research.

To the family of cockfighters, to let them know the reasons why their

husband/wife is engaging the cockfighting.

To the Barangay Officials, to let them realize that having a cockfight event here

in Barangay Badas was not good that it could be a negative impact especially to

the cockfighters.

To the residents of Barangay Badas, to let them understand why cockfighters

are being involved in cockfight gambling.

To the future researchers, to give them some sort of idea why cockfighters

were being involved in cockfighting as well as to enable them to know and

understand the point of views each of the participants.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after a thorough

and in-depth search done by the researcher. The purpose of this chapter was to

gain an understanding of the existing research about cockfighting.

In determining the different causes of cockfighting and to show that

cockfighting exists in the world, the study conducted a documentary review to

prove and identify the cockfighting addicts. To show that cockfighting exists in the

world, the study conducted a documentary review to identify and prove that this

kind of event is happening in the world.

Defining Cockfighting

As defined by Griffin (2014), cockfighting is the most watching show that

happens years ago but it is also rampant nowadays.

Also, cockfighting was one of the oldest sports that are being spread in the

world especially in a certain part of the United States. In addition, cockfighting

has its own value that symbolizes the men identities (Hawley, 1982).

Although, we all know that cockfighting is illegal but most of the men

spend their time just to participate in this kind of gambling. Bali men take good

care of their roosters for a reason that it becomes more powerful as well as their

roosters will be stronger among the others. If that will happen there is a big

possibility that their roosters will be the winner (Matt, 2010).

In the Philippines, cockfights mean more to the Filipino and it involves a lot

of money. Most people were convinced to go there to a stake, and putting bets to

their chosen team. In this game, you cannot know the result and all you can do is

to predict in order for you to win (Almendral, 2015).

It depends on the cockfighters if they will put a big amount of money for

more chances of winning or not. In cockfight events, cockfighters tend to gamble

because for them it is a way that they can double their money (Reilly, 2016).

Besides, there is a law about cockfighting in the Philippines whereas by

reason it was stated there that there is a possibility that it was used and abused

for money purposes nor it serves as a tool to uncontrolled gambling. Hence, it is

more on a way for the continuation of preservation for the legacy of native

Filipino and strengthens our identity (COCKFIGHTING LAW, 1974).

Reasons for Cockfighters in Cockfighting

One of the fundamental reason individuals go to cockfights is to stake, yet

there is proof that demonstrates that underground cockfights are a typical event

and that there is an illegal turn off coaches and battle coordinators, cockfighting

is frequently encompassed by other unlawful exercises (Geer, 2013).

Cockfighters define cockfighting as a less damage form of gambling than

being involved in casinos. It is because this gambling was a fifty-fifty chance in

winning. They can also cancel their bet before the game started as well as they

can leave whenever they want (Lawler, 2014).

Moreover, cockfighters believe that cockfighting is not only putting a bet

but it can also a business through selling their roosters to others with high prices

(Macias & Rogalski, 2018).

The reason why cockfighters get involved in cockfighting is that they feel

happy seeing the people watching on them. That is why, they are inspired to put

a bet in their choosing team (ASPC, 2019).

Based on the cockfighters there are no exact reasons why do they love to get

involved and participate every time there are cockfight events and with that they

still pursue to breed and train roosters for cockfighting purposes.

Cockfighters have their own way of behaving in terms of religion on where

It is interesting to observe especially nowadays that there is a possibility that

cockfighters may not notice the religious life at all for a reason that they are

already having a behavior that is far from before (Ismail, 2016).

Moreover, members of the Alabama House Committee have heard impassioned

and conflicting over a bill to dramatically increase penalties for cockfighting. Bird

breeders argued that the animals are often raised for shows (The Associated

Press, 2010).

In addition, they believe that roosters are raised to fight in this kind of

gambling which is cockfighting. That is why, they kill those roosters who are not

important and keep those roosters who are willing to fight in a game (Peta,

2018).
In connection with that, cockfighting is a part of their tradition and also

doing this kind of gambling is considered as their hobby. It is according to the

Department of Corrections Officer and longtime cockfighter Frank Taianao (Kaur,

2018).

Furthermore, cockfighters get involved in cockfighting for a reason that

they have the chance to win the money, but also putting a bet in cockfight

gambling has its consequences because it is an illegal activity (Geer, 2013).

Another reason was that cockfighters including youngsters nowadays

prefer to participate in these kinds of events for a reason that they apparently

enjoy them (Bekoff, 2011).

Going back to the arena, it is time for the cockfighters to put a bet to their

chosen team but before that, there is an intermission that some spectators are

throwing coins and bills inside the ring or the cockpit. The collection serves as an

offer for their fellow cockfighters who’s sick at the hospital and need his bills paid.

Also, this kind of event is also for the purpose of the funerals on where the

money they collected was given to the family of the dead. We cannot deny that it

is expensive to pay the burial here in the Philippines that most Filipinos cannot

afford to pay the payment (Almendral, 2013).

Experiences of Cockfighters

When the game started, they quickly make a hand signal to put a bet their

choosing team. As the game continued heating up, the arena fills with

determined yelling from the cockfighters. In participating cockfight events they

both agreed that doing this form of gambling was for additional money

(Almendral, 2013).

With that, there is a few seconds pause then after that, the two roosters

start fighting to each other while the crowds are yelling. Some of them are waving

the money and shouting for their bets. When the game is over, the winning team

can have the money while the roosters are lying in the ground with blood on their

money (Buncombe, 2005).

Even if cockfighting is illegal in all 50 states in America but still there are

some cockfighters who isolate the law.

In the TV segments “HBO actual sports activities” it mainly centered on

cockfighters and cockfighting in Oklahoma and Puerto Rico wherein it's far

unlawful in both jurisdictions below federal law. HBO showed one of the guys

managing fighting birds on his assets while others bragged about the winning

they have claimed at derbies wherein they’ve participated (Pacelle, 2017).

“Cockfighting is illegal in all 50 states and anyone who participates in this

crime, or breeds birds for the purpose of fighting, should be charged and

prosecuted,” says John Thompson, deputy executive of the National Sheriff’s

Association (Pacelle, 2017).

In addition, Jimmy a cockfighter from Los Angeles lost everything included

his wife and raised three sons by himself after losing the game in cockfighting.

For him in the long run, all he had left was his roosters. Notwithstanding what he

experienced he still continues to reproduce and train roosters regardless of what

he has experienced (Guardian, 2011).

Cockfights are not always for fun but it is also dangerous for a reason that

it can cause an accident. Recently in California, a man died while attending a

cockfight event because while the cocks are fighting it accidentally jumped to him

that the knife attached to its leg hit him (Bekoff, 2011).

Because it is illegal, In Kentucky, a Virginia man was sentenced for two

years in prison for violating the prohibition act which was strongly backed by the

Humane Society Legislative Fund. Many were being arrested under this Law

(Pacelle, 2017).

From these, it showed that many are being involved in cockfighting that

leads them in prison for violating the law. Being involved in cockfight means to

continued to gamble despite the negative effects that they may encounter.

Going back from the attack at Resort World Manila, in 2017 the gunman

was named Carlo and he is such a big bettor when it comes to cockfighting. In

Tanuan City in Batangas province where he used to own a two-hectare farm just

for his Gamecocks.

According to the village chairman of Barangay Darasa where Carlos had

been for the last five years Dodong Ablao, he was such an impulsive and a big

bettor. It is okay for him to lose a million in just one game (Inquirer, 2017).
Furthermore, if you decided to be involved in cockfight gambling you need

to face all the consequences and also you must accept the result. Putting a bet in

cockfight can make you preoccupied because you want to be the winners but you

end up losing (Sentencia, 2007).

With this, the opinion of cockfighters about cockfighting is not a harmful

one. It is because the roosters are willing to fight even though it makes their lives

in dangers (Cheadle, 2013)

Moreover, according to an international health expert, including the World

Health Organization, roosters in cockfighting are dangerous to the cockfighters

for a reason that they highly spread the bird flu virus. Washington reported that

when the owners wipe the blood of their cocks and accidentally they got a

wound. They usually clean it through sucking out the blood by their mouth, not

minding that there was the blood of a cock on it (Peta, 2018).

In Louisiana, there was a cockfight event that was held and many of the

cockfighters are ready that they already bring out their money while some are

holding their Gamecocks. When the game is about to start two men are getting

ready inside the cockpit and they already prepared their Gamecocks that they put

it in their position facing to each other (Buncombe, 2005).

Within the Philippines, every town in there has its personal area for

cockfighting just like arena and also a TV station dedicated to it whereas

proprietors and trainers can earn tremendous fortunes, it's so deeply ingrained to

their culture and accusations of cruelty simple don't register with the average

Filipino (Young Pioneer Tour, 2019).

Also, cockfighting in American Indian reservations is legal, cockfighting is

a right or lifestyle right of the people of Indian state or tribe in their tribal

regulation, it is the federal regulation in cockfighting (Tonny, 2009).

However, animal activists are ready to peer if sport chicken preventing has

been actually caged within the year 2008 or if there’s an open door so that it will

permit cockfighters to retain in their secretive and underground manner. Till 2008

in Virginia was a misdemeanor offense but is now a felony. The Commonwealth

is currently stated to have one of the only legal guidelines within the kingdom

(Harrison, 2008).

In cockfight events, two gamecocks or roosters are fighting to each other

and stops until one dies. This event happened in popular areas and it is

accompanied by veterans and Mexican immigrants (Molloy, 1998).

Approximately 50 cockfighters from throughout the state showed up at the

rally, held outside at the Madison road prison. They said the jail would be full of

otherwise law-abiding cockfighters (Molloy, 1998).

Many cockers decided to breed and train roosters for purposes. In

the arena, the presences of cockfighters are always expected. (Hawley, n.d).

Summary

Cockfighting defines as gambling for a reason that most of the men

involved in this kind of gambling. They spend their time just to go to the places

where cockfight gambling is being held. That time, cockfighters put their bet

because they have the chance to win the game. In the Philippines, cockfighters
participating cockfighting because it is their way to preserve the culture or the

tradition of native Filipino. In that case, cockfighters participating cockfighting for

some certain reasons.

Cockfighters are being involved in this kind of gambling for a reason that

they want their money to be doubled as well as they fell the happiness while

doing this kind of game. When they feel the happiness, they are inspired to put a

bet on their choosing team because they already knew that the cockfight

gambling is a fifty-fifty chance. That is why they continue putting a bet for a

reason that they have their money if they win. Some of the cockfighters said that

cockfighting is not only putting a bet but it can also a business through selling

their cocks to others with high prices. Moreover, cockfighters participating

cockfighting because they considered it as part of their tradition as well as their

hobby but we all know that being involved in cockfight gambling have its

consequences and you need to be ready for it.

In addition, the experiences of cockfighters are very interesting because

they said that they train roosters for a purpose and that purpose is to gain more

money. They can feel the happiness if they win because they can buy their

needs, their wants at the same time the needs of their family, but they can also

feel sadness if they lose because they don't have their money anymore.

Therefore, if you already involved in this kind of gambling make sure that you can

face all the consequences that might be happening in your life.

Overall, cockfighting exist in many countries around the world.

cockfighters around the world have their different opinions, reasons, and insights

towards cockfighting.
Chapter III

METHODOLOGY

As indicated in the title, this chapter presents the methods and process in

generating the theme. Along with the discussions of the subsections as well as

relating it to our study.

Research Design

The research design was defined as methods of the process and

techniques research would like to choose in order for it to make the data more

arranged at the logical manner and also the research problem would be held very

well (Bhat, 2019).

In research design, we have the descriptive research in which it is very

helpful to make the statement clear and under stable thought its detailed

information (Mittal, 2010).

In its essence, it was just simple for us to determine the behavior of

cockfighters who are involved in cockfighting because it simply describes the

situation that we could apply through our own way of interpretation and by the

help of this it could be a result to a detailed information qualitative research.

As of continuity, under in qualitative research is the naturalistic approach

on where it is an approach that studies social phenomena that are occurring

nowadays. (Cohen D, Crabtree B. 2006).

With the definition, we chose cockfighting for a reason that it is a natural

phenomenon as well as it is rampant nowadays furthermore, according to green

& throgood (2004), qualitative research studies typically look for an answer

questions about ‘what', ‘how' and ‘why' of phenomena. One of these methods is

phenomenology that is being used to describe how human beings experienced a

certain phenomenon.

In our topic cockfighting, it is a phenomenological study because it is a

phenomenon which is present in our society and other than that as we observed

in our local, cockfight events has been part of the celebration when it comes to

occasions in Barangay Badas. Even if its location changed still the cockfighters

came and participated in it.

Also, we are just researchers who gathered information by just basing

from the lived experiences of cockfighters in a sport of cockfighting.

In applying it in our research, we used phenomenology as a method to

describe how cockfighters here in Barangay Badas experienced cockfighting and

aside from that we researchers attempted to set aside biases and preconceived

assumptions about our participants’ experiences.

Research Participants

In a research participant, it refers to the target of the research study. With

that, purposive sampling is one of the samplings in getting participant. It is the

non-probability sampling that chooses according to the manners of a population

that was known as judgmental sampling (Given, 2008).

In connection with our topic, we used the said sampling because it was

applicable for us to select our participants' based on our judgmental thinking to

determine who is involved to cockfighting in a way of setting criteria in which it

could serve as a guide for us in choosing our participants.

Furthermore, our participants were married and experienced cockfighting

within five years and above.

Locale of the Study

According to lien (n.d), the locale of the study means the setting where

researchers conduct the study.

With that, we researchers, chose Barangay Badas, Camansi, City of Mati

as a location for our participants for a reason that we researchers observed that

most of the cockfighters that who are residents here passed in our set criteria.

Further, we also lived here. Thus, it was easy for us to meet our participants in

this locality.

Role of the Researchers

We researchers have a lot of roles that need to be done. To become an

effective qualitative researcher, you need to look for a picture using ideas and

theories. Especially, you must ask probing questions, the listen, think, asks more

probing questions to become your conversation deeper (Simon, 2011).

Similarly, as defined by Austin & Sutton (2015) the role of the researcher

in qualitative research was to try to access the point of views of the participants

and also it involves asking people to talk about some things that may be very

personal in them.
In connection with our topic, we researchers need to apply for our roles in

order to have a better result in the research topic we would conduct. In

cockfighting, we need to make our own probing questions that are

understandable to our participants so that it would not be that hard for them to

answer.

As a matter of fact, we need to apply everything to become an effective

researcher. In conducting our study it was our task to become creative in

arranging our ideas especially we used qualitative research.

In addition, we need to keep their identity for a reason that they trust us.

We must also a friendly one to our participants so that they are comfortable to be

with us and they easily answer our questions.

Data Sources

For the purpose study, only primary data are used since we are in

phenomenological research which focused on the lived experiences of

cockfighters through a one-on-one in-depth interview.

The primary data sources are collected by the researcher for their

research purpose or project. It was an original data source because they are one

who collected those data through their self-determined surveys, interviews, field

observation and experiment (Salkind, 2010).

In relation to our study, we got our primary data in conducting our interview with

our participants. With that, we can say that we are the first one who collected the
information from the cockfighters we interviewed regarding their experiences with

cockfighting.

Data Collection

In collecting the data, we researchers need to record any potentially useful

data thoroughly, and systematically using an audio recorder to cover every word

our participants said.

Data collection is a process of collecting all the information needed from

the reliable source to search for an answer to the research problem, and also test

the hypothesis at the same time sharpen its outcomes (Rouse, 2016).

We could collect our data through interviews or in audiovisual. In our research, it

was possible for us to conduct interviews with the participants from whom we

collected our data.

An interview is a conversation to gather information. The interviewer is the

one who asks the questions and the one who process the conversation, while the

interviewee is the one who responds to these questions. It can happen face-to-

face or on the telephone (Easwaramoorthy and Zarinpoush, 2006).

In conducting our research, we chose the unstructured interview so that it

would be easy for us to get the answer of the participants. Also, it would not be

hard for them as well as on us for a reason that we are not limited to the question

asked.

The unstructured interview is sometimes called an informal interview. It is

the questions that sometimes not planned and askingask without limitation and it
is okay even if it is not in order. And there are questions that can be missed or

added. (McLeod, 2014).

Parts of the data collection are the approaches and one of them is the

individual interview.

The individual interview is usually used as a data collection process in

research. It is worthy in terms of gaining or collecting the information of people

don't their perception understanding and experiences of the chosen

phenomenon. (Ryan, Coughlan and Cronin, 2013).

As a group, we chose the individual interview particularly an in-depth one,

so that we can have a better result. Also, the participants can be comfortable in

sharing their experiences as cockfighters in a private way.

Data Analysis

Data analysis is part of qualitative research on where it is a process of

being a systematic finding and arranges the transcripts as well as observation

notes of the researcher. With that, it can be more under stable (Wong, 2008).

In analyzing the data, it is important to follow the proper process so that

we can generate the right theme for our topic cockfighting. And the steps are

transcribing, translating, coding, collating, and generating theme.

First, transcribing is a word – for – word process on where it is conducted

by individual group or group interviews. In transcribing you can write the spoken

words of your participants (Mondada, 2007).

In transcribing our data it is important to have our phone for the audio

recording during the interview. With that, we just write everything including the

mannerism of the participants.

In transcription, it involves translation from one language to another that is a

challenging task. Time and effort can be consumed by translation (Mondada,

2007).

For us, the translation was needed especially we used our native language while

conducting the interview for the sake of our participants to be comfortable in

answering the questions.

When we were done transcribing, it was our time to translate the thought

being answered by the participants with the help of dictionaries to make it sure.

Coding is a process that looks for similarities, and differences of the data.

After that, you can group similar data and put it in their respective areas (Wong,

2008).

In relation to our study, after we transcribed and translated everything, it was our

time to segregate their answers with the use of letters in order for us to come up

with themes in each sub-questions.

In continuity, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, collate means to

bring together different pieces of information in order to study and compare them.

After coding, it's time for bringing them all together to get the theme we wanted

since the beginning. In our study, we separated the answers that were different

from the majority ones and compared them.

A theme is a pattern In which it catches the important and captivating of a

topic

(Maguire, 2017).

Trustworthiness

As defined by Oxford Dictionaries, trustworthiness is the ability to rely on

as honest or truthful.

In addition, trustworthiness was all about the credibility and the honesty

being applied by the researcher (Statistics Solutions, 2016).

To make it more clear, we researchers are confident on how accurate and

reliable our research was as well as our degree of neutrality in our research

study which means we purely got our findings based on our participant's

answers.

Due to the nature of qualitative research, many doubts occurring during

and after the process. Often researchers question the credibility of collected data

and whether enough evidence is gathered to support the claim. The

trustworthiness is a crucial aspect within qualitative research and should not be

taken lightly.

Furthermore, to become trustworthy is valuable and important for a reason

that this kind of ability allows knowing and describe the virtues of qualitative

terms (Given, 2008).

With relation to our topic, we researchers need to be honest about the data were

going to gather so that our goal in research will be achieved truthfully. As we go

on to our study, what is being answered by the participants will just stay what it

is. We are not allowed to add some information in our own to make it more

informative. To be trustworthy is important to have credible and reliable

information in the end.

Ethical Considerations

Next is the ethical consideration of where it is a collection of significant

information in which define the human's identity (ALRC, 2002).

In conducting our research, we need to have confidentiality for the sake of

our participants so that we can guarantee their security. In conducting our

interview it is very important not to share with anyone what is being answered by

the participants about their point of views in cockfighting.

In conducting our study, we need to ask first our participants if he/she was free

for an interview. Next would be our explanation on why we conduct this research

as well as their confidentiality so that they would not be a worry in telling the truth

about their insights in cockfighting.

CHAPTER IV

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

In this chapter, the results of the study are presented from the data

analysis we got as we conducted our interview. Along with the themes that we

generate with comprehensive discussions which answer the research questions

of the study.

Furthermore, as we begin in our discussion we will establish the symbols

we used as we present our quotation. To the interview transcriptions, we used C

which refers to the Cockfighters Number.

Opinions of Cockfighters towards cockfighting

Throughout the conduct of our face-to-face interview, we found out the

different insights and views of the participants. With that, we classify their

answers based on their similarities.

The interview allowed us to have abroad interpretation of how cockfighters

define cockfighting based on their experiences.

In analyzing the data we generate our first theme from the participants' answers

on their experiences in cockfighting. With regards to their answers, we achieve

the theme such as cockfight is gambling.

Gambling. The participants who experienced cockfighting within five years

and already married define cockfighting as gambling. We discovered that

cockfighters find it as a waste of money and a fifty-fifty chance in winning. Aside

from that, we also knew that cockfighters attend cockfights during ‘fiesta’ in which

people celebrated their GKK patron in that day or ‘araw’ on where it is the

celebration for the anniversary of the barangay. In these occasions cockfight

events are part of it.

In our face to face interview, it was revealed that the cockfighters as

gambling. These are expressed with the following quotations:

For me, cockfighting is gambling on where I can spend my

free time in putting a bet to my chosen team. Also, in this
kind of gambling, I can express my happiness and
excitement.

That is gambling on where we can have fun from it. It is

where we hope that the amount of our money will be
doubled. (Kana kay sugal unya malingaw mi ana unya naga
C3)

Cockfighting is gambling. Let's say that it is a fiesta in the

GKK of Divine Mercy with that we will go there to gamble
hoping to win. (ang sabong kay sugal mana. Atong ibutang

As I started in participating in cockfight events it means

gambling for me. (Sabong sa nagsugod pako ang sabong is
sugal lang na sya. C8)

It is a form of gambling. And in cockfight situation it leads to

gambling and with that there is also happiness and sadness.
(Sugal mani sya. Ang sitwasyon sa sabong padung ta sa
sugal. Ang sabong tawag ug sugal cockfighting unya ang
atong padulngan kay kalipay ug kaguol gyud. C9)
In the Philippines, cockfights mean more to the Filipino and it involves a lot

of money. Most people were convinced to go there to a stake, and putting bets to

their chosen team. In this game, you cannot know the result and all you can do is

to predict in order for you to win (Almendral, 2015)

It depends on the cockfighters if they will put a big amount of money for

more chances of winning or not. In cockfight events, cockfighters tend to gamble

because for them it is a way that they can double their money (Reilly, 2016).

When the game started, they quickly make a hand signal to put a bet their

choosing team. As the game continued heating up, the arena fills with

determined yelling from the cockfighters. In participating cockfight events they

both agreed that doing this form of gambling was for additional money

(Almendral, 2013).

Leisure. Most of the cockfighters stated that cockfighting for them is for

pastime. There are times that they do nothing that’s why they tend to go to

cockfight events to participate. Also, we found out that in cockfighting

In our individual interview, it was revealed that cockfighting was defined as

leisure for the cockfighters. These are expressed with the following comments:
Cockfighting was leisure for me to become happy and also it
became a pastime if I don’t have work.
trabaho. C4)

For me, cockfighting is when I don't do anything and I'm not

that busy aside from it is gambling it is also a pastime for me
not to be bored.

Cockfighting is when I’m bored in the house so that I will just

go to cockfight events for me not to be bored. (Sabong kuan

Cockfighting is when I spend my free time and if I am done

in the works in the house.

For others cockfighting is gambling and also for me this is

leisure to do in order for me to be happy.

Based on the cockfighters there are no exact reasons why do they love to

get involved and participate every time there are cockfight events and with that

they still pursue to breed and train roosters for cockfighting purposes. They love

to go to cockfighting events every time they have free time (Ismail,2016).

In addition, they always go to the places where cockfighting is being held if

they have their past time to get away from boredom.

Reasons for cockfighters in participating to cockfights

As we conducted our research we discovered that cockfighters have

different reasons in being involved in cockfighting. They are different from each

other so that we basically grouped their answers according to their similarities.

This individual interview let us understand and gave us more perspective on their

reasons in participating in cockfights.

The first theme that we generated was based on the answers of our

participants that they relate in their experiences. Their experiences towards

cockfighting can be established towards their reasons on where we get the

theme that cockfighters tend to participate in cockfighting for fun.

For Fun. The participants who are cockfighters felt happiness every time

they participate in cockfighting. We found out that cockfighters tend to get

involved in cockfighting for them to have fun. Furthermore, even if they lost all

their money, for them it was more important to be happy. For them, participating

in cockfight events depends on themselves.

In our face to face interview, we discovered their reasons in participating

cockfights are just for fun. These are expressed with the following comments:

For us was just to have fun. It depends on you if you want to

participate in cockfights or not. (Para sa amo kay para lang mi
malingaw.
C1)
Cockfighting was only for fun. And it’s within the self of the person.

It is just for fun. It’s only me who decide to participate in

cockfighting.

Cockfighting was just for fun and I just accept if I win or lose
because that’s what it is.
sya malipay man pud gud ko. C4)

My reason in participating cockfighting was just for fun, for me to

become happy and it meant to become a reason for happiness.

Cockfighting is a sport that is already part of the tradition, and most of the

cockfighters tend to participate aside from money purposes, they want to have

fun and enjoy it (Titthara & White, 2014). In Cabuyao, Laguna, cockfighting is for

fun, to chat with the guys, to have a few laughs. And hoping a friend wins so

hopefully he can have a beer and eat one of the losing roosters (Almendral

2013). Furthermore, based on the related information cockfight are just for fun

because they don't care how much money they stake as long as they enjoy and

have time for their friends or to their co-bettors.

Moreover, members of the Alabama House Committee had found out the

conflicting about the penalties being set to the one who will be caught. With that,

most cockfighters don’t agree with it because for them the purpose of the

roosters was to put in a battle and for shows (The Associated Press, 2010).

Another reason was that cockfighters including youngsters nowadays prefer to

participate in these kinds of events for a reason that they apparently enjoy them

(Bekoff, 2011).

Inheritance. Cockfighters get involved to cockfighting for a reason that

they inherit it from their family that becomes as their hobby. For them, it is

in the blood that flows the passion in participating in cockfight events.

Moreover, cockfighters influenced by their grandfather as well as their

father influenced them that is why they involved in this kind of gambling.

With that, they already know how to handle their cocks at the same time

they take care of their cocks for a reason that it will become stronger and

ready to fight. In addition, they are the one who continues doing this kind

of gambling on where their grandfather or their father is the one who

fledged it.

In our face to face interview, we discovered that the inheritance is one of

their reasons in participating cockfights. These are expressed with the following

comments:

I inherit it to my grandpa as well as to my father that is why I

become cockfighters.
I being involved in this kind of gambling which is cockfighting
because of my grandfather, he is the one who influenced me
to participate in cockfight events. (Nag apil ko aning sabong
tungod sa akong lolo kay naga sugal man sya ani mao tong
nadani pod ko na muimpil niini. C7)
Participating in cockfighting are not that bad it is because I
know how to take care of my cocks and my grandpa is
always in my side if I need his advice.
I was being influenced by my family because they
participating cockfighting that is why I become a cockfighters
too, who is putting a bet in my choosing team. (Nahimo kog
C10)
I continue doing this kind of gambling because of my
grandfather, he inherits me that is why I become cockfighters
who always go to the places on where the cockfighting is
being held.

The sports spread west with the frontier and found its way to Utah early in

the state’s history. The Utah cockers follow the traditions of the southern cockers

with some influence from the Mexican methods. A fourteen year old boy was

early introduced to cockfighting by his family (Walker,1986).

Therefore, one of the cockfighters reason is they influenced by their family

and because of that they being involved in cockfight gambling. They become

more active in this gambling for a reason that they continue the cockfighting in

which their family is the one who fledged this for them.

Insights of cockfighters with regards to cockfighting

In conducting our individual interview we are able to know and informed

about their insights in being involved to cockfighting that they encounter in

participating in cockfight events. They have different insights so that in order for

us to generate the theme, we grouped the answers that are according to the

similarities of the responses.

In analyzing the data, we generated two themes on the insights of

cockfighters towards cockfighting and these are based on their answers that we

got during our interview. There are two themes such as it was helpful and it

expressed the different emotions and feelings of a person.

Helpful. As we conducted our interview we found out that most of the

cockfighters find cockfighting as helpful for them because they can provide the

needs of their family if and only they win. Also, for them, it will be more helpful if

they'll do it as a business. Additionally, it also helps them to enhance their skills

in counting money for a reason that in cockfighting it involves counting of money.

In conducting our interview we already know their insights towards

cockfighting that it was helpful and it can express their different feelings and

emotions. These are expressed with the following quotation:

It was helpful for me especially to my family if I win because I can

have a budget for the food for my family.
I realize that in cockfighting it was not only a waste of money but a
way that I can double the amount of my money and also it can be
more helpful if you will do it as a business. (Akong nahuna hunaan

What I can say about cockfighting is that it can be helpful if I will win
not only for my family but also in myself even if I did not finish my
studies but still I know how to count because of cockfighting for a
reason that it involves counting.
Cockfight gambling really helps me for a reason that it supports me
to build my house.
If you are involved in cockfighting, you can make it as your
business for extra income. ( kung naga apil ka og sabong, pwede
nimu e business para naay kay kwarta. C10)

Cockfighting is helpful because cockfighters can buy their wants if and

only they win because they already have much money to buy anything they need

for a reason that in cockfighting, if you’ll win the money you put can make your

money double but it depends to the money you stake (Almendral 2013). In

addition, cockfighting is not only putting a bet but also you can consider it as a

business through selling the roosters to others with different prices (Macias &

Rogalski, 2018). Moreover, cockfighting was helpful because they can find it as a

business where they can have their source of income.

A Puerto Rican cockfighter won in cockfight gambling in a total of $95,000

(Blocks, 2017). With this, the money they got could help not only with themselves

but also for their family.

Risky. The participants who are cockfighters felt happiness and sadness

in participating in cockfight events because it is a fifty- fifty chance in

winning. For them, it is risky because they don't know if the money they

spend will come back or not. It was not that easy to choose in the teams

because they have to make sure that they will surely win. Based on them

in participating in cockfight events it has pros and cons so that they have

to make sure in every decision they are going to make.

In our interview, we already know our participant's insights about

cockfighting. These are expressed with the following comments:

What I can say is I can feel happiness and sadness in doing it. If
you will win then it is happiness but if you will lose it is sadness. It is
a 50-50 chance in winning because there was no exact way of
winning the game.
man gyud ning sabong kay wa may eksaktong paraan para
makadaog niini. C2)
In this game, there are winners as well as losers. Also, I cannot
avoid using the money for the bets that are meant for the needs of
my family. (Ani nga dula naay daog ug pilde unya dili nako
Cockfighting is a game that needs luck in order for me to win. It is
fifty fifty to win.
swerte aron madaog. C7)
Cockfighting is risky for a reason that it makes you become poor if
you lose the game every time you put a bet.
Cockfighting becomes risky if you lose your money for your family
then you don’t have the chance to buy your needs especially the
foods for your family.
pamilya. C4)

Cockfighters define cockfighting as a less damage form of gambling than

being involved in casinos. It is because this gambling was a fifty-fifty chance in

winning. They can also cancel their bet before the game started as well as they

can leave whenever they want (Lawler, 2014).

Also, there is a lot of money to be made on bets in a different sport and

majority of bets are made on cockfights but the difference is that it is made by

word of mouth and not in tickets being sold (PhilLife, 2018). With this, they may

risk all the money they'll bring because they are hoping to go home with a double

amount of money.

Furthermore, if you decided to be involved in cockfight gambling you need

to face all the consequences and also you must accept the result. Putting a bet in

cockfight can make you preoccupied because you want to be the winners but you

end up losing (Sentencia, 2002)

CHAPTER V

IMPLICATIONS AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS

Presented in this chapter is the summary of the general objectives

concluding the various implications along with the limitation and possible future

direction of the study.

Summary

The main objective of the study was to explore the insights of the

cockfighters in participating in cockfight events. Specifically to define cockfighting

on their own as well as its reasons and how they deal with it.

The study revealed that an emerging theme on defining cockfight categorized as

gambling and leisure. With that, cockfighters always go to the places where they

can have the game especially the place on where occasions such as Fiesta or

Araw on celebrated. Moreover, cockfighters themselves are doing this kind of

thing because they believed that they have the chance to win. Also, it is a leisure

that they can have their time by doing it and a way to not get bored in just staying

in their homes

In our face- to- face in-depth interview they said that they are participating

because of some certain reasons.

Furthermore, cockfighters have their reasons why they participate in

cockfights. As cited by them, being involved in cockfight was fun because they

can laugh and they can also talk to their co-bettors. With that, they feel free from
their problems in their daily lives. While they also stated that it can be a business

if they will manage it well so that they can have their income from it by selling

their roosters to their co-cockfighters with high prices.

Therefore, our study revealed their insight which is cockfighting was helpful and

risky. They say that it is helpful because if they win they can buy everything their

family wants. And they can say that it is risky because it is a fifty-fifty chance in

winning and they do not know or are not sure that the money they put in their bet

was worth fighting for.

In addition, this study discovers that cockfighters who experienced

sadness and happiness are aware of the things they might encounter after

dealing with this kind of event.

Overall, cockfighters have different opinions on the definition of

cockfighting. They also have their two sides about the reasons in participating in

it as well as to their insights in cockfighting.

Implications

In our study entitled Exploring the Realm of Cockfighting through the

Experiences of Cockfighters, it is research about cockfighting on where it is a

phenomenon that is happening nowadays. In Barangay Badas this kind of event

happens every time there is an occasion such as GKK fiesta or Araw. This event

is supported by the Barangay Captain as well as the officials in which the in

charge of it was the one who held the occasion. Moreover, cockfighting was

always present in any occasion and it lasts for four to five days on where many
cockfighters are being involved, some are bringing their Gamecocks and some

are just bringing their money for the bets they'll going to make.

Furthermore, as we conduct our interview our participants have different

opinions with regards to the given questions we ask. With this, we can say that it

is very important to determine their one by one answer so that we can generate

the theme we want to know from the beginning.

Additionally, many cockfighters find cockfighting as a hobby where they

can spend their time doing it. A lot of cockfighters tend to get involved in this

kind of event.

In analyzing our data we come up to our first theme in which cockfighting

for the participants is gambling and leisure. We all know that gambling can cause

a negative effect to everyone, in this situation its either you win or lose while they

also find it as leisure on where they intended their time by participating to it in

order for them not to be bored. But still, for them, they still continue to get

involved in many reasons.

When it comes to their reasons, we come up to our second theme such as

cockfighting was just for fun and also a business. For them, it can be a thing that

they can spend their time and feel happiness as well as sadness. Also, most of

our participants believed that cockfight events are made for people to have fun.

However, business is the other reason for cockfighters in participating in

cockfight events. They stated that it can be a way of their income In which they

make it as a business by breeding roosters and selling it with high prices.

In addition, we got our last two themes about the insights of cockfighters

towards cockfighting and these are helpful and risky.

For other people, cockfighting was just a waste of money but we found

out that this type of gambling was just nothing and nonsense because it helps

some of the cockfighters in terms of the needs of their family if and only they win

and chose the right team. In connection with that, it is also a game of risk on

where we knew that in participating to cockfights is not simply just putting and

choosing your bet because according to our participants you need to stand in

your decisions because in that decision you will make the fortune you’ll going to

have.

In addition, the cockfighters must know how to manage their self so that

their lives will not become miserable. If they decide to focus on that game, then

their decision can affect their lives. However, if they decide that they must know

their limitation while doing this kind of events, then they are lucky because they

know what they are doing. With that, the Control Theory of Wiener had a

connection to our study for a reason that it can help them to control everything as

well as to control their activities in order for them to achieve their goals and

needs.
Future Directions

We researchers, we have our recommendations in terms of this study.

First, if you are being involved in cockfighting not let this gambling destroy

your family; instead make it as one of your inspiration to face the challenges.

Second, accept the result. When you put a bet in your choosing team and

you lose. You must stop putting a bet on the other round because it can just

lessen your money.

Third, if you win the game in the first place. You should also stop putting a

bet in another round of the game for a reason that you might lose.

Fourth, make time for your family. Even though you are attending to cockfight

events you should also have time for your family so that they may feel that you

are with them and they can also feel your love.

Next, if you realize that cockfighting is not that helpful for you and in your

family, then it’s time for you to stop attending and participating in cockfighting.

Lastly, to the future researchers who will choose cockfighting as their topic at the

same time, to explore and discover the different opinions and emotions of the

family of cockfighters towards cockfighting.

Therefore, we must accept the fact that cockfighting was part of life in some of

the cockfighters.

kaagi . .

50-50 man gyud ning sabong kay wa may

(I experienced sadness and happiness. If you’ll win it’s the happiness

while if you’ll lose it’s the sadness. It was not helpful for me for reason that it is a

fifty-fifty chance of winning. It has pros and cons if I win its good but if I lose its

bad. What I just can say is I can feel happiness and sadness in doing it. If you

will win then it is happiness but if you will lose it is sadness. It is a 50-50 chance

in winning because there was no exact way in winning the game. But then if you

are involved in cockfighting, you can make it as your business for extra income).

Research Question #1

Unsa ang sabong para sa imo? (What is cockfighting for you?)

Kana kay sugal unya malingaw mi ana unya naga laom pud mi na ma

gihumu jud na ug kanang . .

gobyerno.
(That is gambling and it was made for fun so the people will enjoy. It was a

conducted during fiesta or other occasions that was handled by the government

for the people).

Research Question #2

(What are your reasons in

participating to cockfighting?)

Lingaw lingaw raw ala man ato atoa ran na, aw malingaw malingaw man

(It is just for fun. It’s only me who decide to participate in cockfighting).

Research Question #3

Unsa ang imong maingon niining sabong? (What are your insights in

cockfighting?)

Naay mapildi naa puy madaog . . . way jud nay ayo ang sabong atoa

permintihun nani dili napud maayo. Ani nga dula naay daog ug pilde unya dili

akong pamilya.

(There are winners as well as loser. Cockfighting was not really good it

was just on us in order to have fun. You could felt happiness and sadness. It’s

very sad because I cannot avoid to used the money in cockfighting instead of

using it for the needs of my family. I realized that this kind of gambling was good
if you will do this often but it becomes bad if you do this always. In this game

there are winners as well as losers. Also, I cannot avoid to use the money for the

bets that are meant for the needs of my family).

C4

Research Question #1

Unsa ang sabong para sa imo? (What is cockfighting for you?)

. . song kay nag sabong man.

(For me, cockfighting was helpful for my family it happened during araw or

fiesta and the purok chairman was the in charged of it. Cockfighting was leisure

for me to become happy and also it became a pastime if I don’t have work).

Research Question #2

(What are your reasons in

participating to cockfighting?)

(Cockfighting was just for fun and I just accept if I win or lose because

that’s what it is).

Research Question #3

Unsa ang imong maingon niining sabong? (What are your insights in

cockfighting?)

kaagi nako pag mag sabong kay lingaw vaw sabong mapildi man gyud

bulbaankung mapilde, madaog naa jud maapektuhan kay sugal man naa mag

(As I can see cockfighting was good in terms of money. My experienced in

cockfighting was fun. You can win or lose as well as the feeling of nervous. There

are sadness and happiness with this it can be a cause of misunderstanding

between my wife. Cockfighting become risky if you lose your money for your

family then you don’t have the chance to buy your needs especially the foods for

your family).

C5

Research Question #1

Unsa ang sabong para sa imo? (What is cockfighting for you?)

(Cockfighting is when I’m bored in the house so that I will just go to

cockfight events for me not to be bored).

Research Question #2
(What are your reasons in

participating to cockfighting?)

(I am the one who conduct cockfighting events for the sake of fund racing.

It was just my hobby and no one influence. Also, I inherit it to my grandpa as well

as to my father that is why I become a cockfighters).

Research Question #3

Unsa ang imong maingon niining sabong? (What are your insights in

cockfighting?)

Makalingaw kay excite excitement kuan ha? Unsa? Unsa to? Kulbaan.

(I can say that it was just for fun and I can feel excitement every time I

participated. It is the happiness of the person, also it is sad especially when you

lose the game. There are ones who are affected but it is helpful if you will do this

for business).
C6

Research Question #1

Unsa ang sabong para sa imo? (What is cockfighting for you?)

Sakto

na sitwasyon. . . . aw oh nga kaning dili sama aning pista naa man jud syay

sabong araw ng purok naa gihapon siyay sabong. Mahitabo kini once pud na

naay araw.

(It was just for fun for everyone. It happened during “araw ng purok”. For

others cockfighting is a gambling and also for me this is leisure to do in order for

me to be happy).

Research Question #2

(What are your reasons in

participating to cockfighting?)

(My reason in participating in cockfighting was just for fun, for me to

become happy. No one influence me and I cannot say that I influence others and

it can to become a reason of happiness).

Research Question #3

Unsa ang imong maingon niining sabong? (What are your insights in

cockfighting?)

(My experience in cockfighting was that you can win or lose. Every time I

put a bet only think positive that 2 will win also it affect my family because if I lose

I dont have money to buy the needs of my family. As what 2 said, it can be

helpful if I win. I realize that in participating cockfights it enhance my skills in

counting money).
C7

Research Question #1

Unsa ang sabong para sa imo? (What is cockfighting for you?)

Ang sabong sugal mana. Uhmm ibutang natu naay sabong kuntahay

camansi, Divine Mercy ana adtu jud ta didtu sa sabungan kay naay sabong didto

kung pista dinhi sa Divine Mercy oh an oh pista.

(Cockfighting is a gambling. Let’s say that it is fiesta in the GKK of Divine

Mercy with that we will go there to gamble hoping to win).

Research Question #2

(What are your reasons in

participating to cockfighting?)

(I being involved in this kind of gambling which is cockfighting because of

my grandfather, he is the one who influenced me to participate in cockfight

events It is just within myself, no one influence me).

Research Question #3

Unsa ang imong maingon niining sabong? (What are your insights in

cockfighting?)

Akong mahuna huna an kuan gud madaog lang. ah walay maapektuhan

malingaw. Malipay tau g maguol kay madaog syempre malipay ug maguol kun
mapilde kay saying man ang kwarta. Ang sabong kay dula kana nga kinahanglan

ug swerte aron madaog

(I can say that there was happiness and sadness. I feel sad if I lose the game if I

win of course I feel happy. Cockfighting was made for fun. Cockfighting is a

game that needs luck in order for me to win. It is fifty fifty to win).

C8

Research Question #1

Unsa ang sabong para sa imo? (What is cockfighting for you?)

Mahibal an pud nimo na Araw naa

Araw, Pista, Birthday Celebration. Kinsay nag in charge

ani? Ang nagdumalagyud sa sabong ang magpa Araw.

(As I started in participating to cockfight events it means gambling for

me.As what I said cockfighting is for fun accompany by sadness.(laugh) I can

give situation, you will know if there is cockfight event because of the bangkero. If

there’s a bangkero then there is cockfighting. They will get permit for the event. It

happens every Araw, Fiesta or in a Birthday Celeration. The one who is in charge

in this event is the one who leads the Araw.)

Research Question #2
(What are your reasons in

participating to cockfighting?)

Basta happy.

(Participating in cockfighting are not that bad it is because I know how to

take care of my cocks and my grandpa is always in my side if I need his advice

and It’s for fun, cockfighting is for fun. Of course, you will feel nervous because it

is gambling and also my co-cockfighters. If Sunday there is cockfighting in

Gallera. Of course, if I have money then I will look for an event the cockfights

happen. In cockfighting I don’t think in winning big it’s just that I go there to win or

lose the important is I’m happy.)

Research Question #3

Unsa ang imong maingon niining sabong? (What are your insights in

cockfighting?)

nakong pinanghikot ning daog tanan akong manok sukad sakong pagkuan

pagpanari nakog manok duha lang akong pildi nga manok. Ah syempre pag

( Of course I experienced breeding cocks and put them into fights. In

breeding cocks all wins aside from the roosters who lose. You will put your bet on

the team that you think will win many are being affected. Yourself, family is the

number 1 if you get involved in cockfighting. It is helpful every time I won but

there are also days of losing. I realize that I need to lessen my time in

participating because it can really affect my family.)

C9

Research Question #1

Unsa ang sabong para sa imo? (What is cockfighting for you?)

katong derbie then sa tari tari lang is naay koime sentinsyador tapos pikas pikas

sugal. Sa derbie is mao ra gihapon ay kalahian lang sa derbie is naay permiso

daan sa mudaog sa mu champion unsa walay labot sa ilahang sugal nya sarili

nila. Kanus a mahitabo ah kasagaran sabong is celebration sa Pista, Araw sa

(For me, it means gambling when I just started in participating until I do

some research on how they take care of the roosters but now cockfighting for me

is a sport. You can see some cockfight events that happens in sports complex. It

is a sport for big time cockfighters and a gambling for small events. It is a

gambling but in big events they also have their charity in conducting cockfights. It

is cockfight if you’ll see two cocks fighting to each other. There are process of

cockfighting. There are debries or cockfight in big events and small events. There

is what we called koime sentinsyador and both sides have their bets. In order for

it to be equal the other side will get the bets from the people outside. It happens

every time there is a celebration of Fiesta or Araw and in regular they also have

their schedules in a month once a year for slashers, hitmaster, bakbakanicup.

But in small events it depends.)

Research Question #2

(What are your reasons in

participating to cockfighting?)

Ang uban ganahan kay sugal sa ako is nagaapil ko og sabong is ang uban

is hilig, hobbit na ang uban is pugson gyud uli ganahan silag manok ganahan

makipaglaban og manok. Sa kuan pa ana is ang uban genetics lolo nimo papa

nimo o kalahi nimo sabungero or nadani ka sa imong barkada sa ako is naa gyud

gamay unya sa kuan inheritance nga lolo namo hilig ng manok and then mga

uyuan nako hilig sa manok, so isa sya sa mga nakadani sa ako and then katung

mga kuan big time na mga tao sa sabong is makita nako kung unsa ilang naabot

tungod sa sabong. Daghan na daghan puy na pobre. Motibo, una is naa koy

imong manok halos taas ug pursyento na mudaogsa is ang ambisyon naku is

Daghan gyud taas ug presyo sa sabong is ah kuan sa ingles pa is continuous

learning wala sya naga I stop naga upgrade sila every year every months kung

mabuhat na nimo ni na perfect nani sa akoa na manok and next year dapat mu

proceed pa sya mulabaw pa ka yang imong kalaban pud is naga upgrade pud.

(For others it’s because they like it, it’s their hobby and passion. There is

what we called genetics your grandpa and father like to breed roosters or

influenced by friends. For me cockfighting is by inheritance because my

grandfather and uncle like to breed and get involved to a cockfighting. And then,

those who are big time in cockfighting I can see how their life change because of

cockfighting. Many became rich and many became poor just like others they sell

their roosters in high prices. I have ambition to breed and take care of chicks until

they grow the people will be the one to look for the roosters because they already

know that this roosters will be good at fighting if and only I have many

experiences in winning. There is a long process in cockfighting and there is what

we called continuous learning because it is unstoppable and it upgraded every

months, year. Also as a breeds you need to upgrade in order to win because

your competitor also upgraded.)

Research Question #3

Unsa ang imong maingon niining sabong? (What are your insights in

cockfighting?)

Kaagi kaagi is naay time na muoli ka way sud imong bulsa nay time nga

akong manok wala dig nako na anticipate is dili dig kaya sa akong budget so

so wala sya na manage mao na. natabang is daghan kog amigo unya naay

mudool sa imo magpatabang ana and then sa pagsabong is nagresearch ko

(In cockfighting you will experience to go home with no money left in your

pocket and giving money to the people because you won a lot of money from it.

Other mpeople says that because of their happiness they are like in heaven. With

that, there are so much happiness every time you win and you’ll have sweats

even in cold season. Before if I put a bet I only think that if I win I will just drink to

celebrate but now I have my target in buying something if I will win. Many can be

affected, the first one is I. If I don’t know how to budget my time there is a

possibility that I will lessen my time with my friends. Also, there is a tendency that

you will use the money for cockfighting even if it is not for it. If you like doing it
then you will be happy. Others only want to go to cockfight event to look for fights

but will not put a bet. I also feel sadness because others don’t know how to

control for a reason that they tend to stake the money in cockfighting even if

there is no extra money for it. It is helpful because you can sell it and the money

can be use for your family just like for the studies of the children to become

professional someday. There nis also negative effect for me. If I don’t manage

well then there is a tendency that the money I spend for will become useless. It is

helpful because with this I met different person and someone will look for my help

and I also research about the incubator that can be use in breeding cocks. Now I

already have my own incubator. Moreover, having cocks help me to retain my

energy just by looking and touching them).

Research Question #1

Unsa ang sabong para sa imo? (What is cockfighting for you?)

(It can be gambling, it is fun but sadness can be felt in losing. Cockfighting is

when I spend my free time and if I am done in the works in the house

Research Question #2
(What are your reasons in

participating to cockfighting?)

(my reason is that I don’t do nothing. Friends and only I are the one who

influenced me. It’s just that I like doing it but aside from that I was being

influenced by my family because they participating cockfighting that is why I

become a cockfighters too, who is putting a bet in my choosing team. All I can

say is just don’t try to participate in cockfighting because it can only leads you to

feel sad and happy).

Research Question #3

Unsa ang imong maingon niining sabong? (What are your insights in

cockfighting?)

Pamilya, pamilya syemre pag mapilde awayun man

(My experience is that I breed roosters but if this cock loses then I will just

put a bet. Of course, I feel nervous if the cock lose and happy if it wins. If you are

involved in cockfighting, you can make it as your business for extra income. A

millionaire has the tendency to become poor but if you will just manage well then

you can have income from this. It helps me because with this I already have my

house).
