HOWARD UNIVERSITY

School of Communications
Department of Strategic, Legal and Management Communication
Student Work Log/Narrative

Week of: Monday, January 28, 2019

Responsibilities: During my first week at my internship site, I learned about the International
Spy Museum’s Instagram, Facebook and Twitter channels and studied key messages and
branding to create future social media posts before the grand opening. I studied a printed
document of their 5-month social media campaign that was given to me by my supervisor that
described what the organization preferred for their social media content. In addition, I planned
and scheduled social media posts for this week on their Twitter and Facebook pages on Sprout
Social. Finally, I created a social media content/publishing calendar for the month of
February/Black History Month.
Comments/Reflections: Since it was my first week at my internship as the new International
Spy Museum Social Media Intern, I had the opportunity to take a tour around the unfinished
museum with my supervisor, as well as meet all of the directors and other employees of the
many departments at the museum. I was also shown a well-known social media management
software called Sprout Social, that is mainly used for their social analytics, engagements, and
publishing. Having previously taken a class about social media and marketing, I understood the
type of language, platform and brand voice that was appropriate on social media, but learning
new material was a great opportunity to experience something that I could use later in the future.
Overall, it was a fantastic first week at my internship site.

Week of: Monday, February 4, 2019

Responsibilities: Planned and scheduled social media posts for this week on the Spy Museum’s
Instagram, Twitter and Facebook pages by using Sprout Social. I also wrote my first video
recorded synopsis for the Spy Museum’s video series shoot for the week of February 1. Finally, I
started a social media content plan for the rest of Black History Month and Women’s History
Month in March
Comments/Reflections: During the beginning of the week, I had the opportunity to join the
museum’s communication & marketing department team meeting. The meeting consisted of
discussions about their individual job accomplishments and future plans before the grand
opening of the museum in May. Also, while managing work assignments and adjusting to the
many learning tasks that I’ve done so far was so difficult to remember, so I created a
document/calendar which was a very useful idea. My supervisor knew my passion was to work
for the entertainment or movie industry, so she expressed that my video synopsis piece was
extremely detailed and it should be used for the Spy Sneak Peek Video series which was very
exciting for me.
Week of: Monday, February 11, 2019
Responsibilities: I continued to do my normal work assignments by planning, organizing, and
scheduling social media content for this week and the week after. On my next internship day, it
was the day of the recorded video shoot with the Executive Director of the International Spy
Museum. I also created another document that was included with my recorded synopsis, which
was ‘Talking Points” or artifacts facts to help him with his interview. Before making my
“Talking Points” document, I had to do research on some artifacts that were going to be included
in the video. Finally, I was assigned to take notes during a larger department meeting.
Comments/Reflections: _As this being the third week at my internship, I began to become more
familiar and comfortable with the work environment and the work assignments. Right when I
come into my building, I know right away I need to start working on analyzing the Spy
Museum’s social media platforms for updates on my desk computer and schedule some new
content for the next week on Sprout Social, before I receive new assignments from my
supervisor. Having the opportunity to manage a video shoot with the executive director of this
major museum was very nerve-wrecking, but it was very exciting, new, and productive. I learned
a great amount of new information during the marketing meeting, like the many forms of
advertisements, revenue, ad cost info, new and creative social media interactive apps.

Week of: Monday, February 18, 2019

Responsibilities: I tried some new things this week by recording many videos of the new Spy
Museum Store for their Instagram story before the day of the grand opening on February 25. I
also continued to craft and publish posts on Sprout Social to put on the museum’s social sites.
Finally, I started brainstorming and drafting ideas for my first blog posts for March’s Women’s
History Month in relation to different women in espionage for the International Spy Museum
blog site.
Comments/Reflections: As this was my fourth week at my internship, it was official that I’ve
gotten used to the daily activities and didn’t really need much help with any of my
responsibilities. My supervisor trusted my judgments and my work efforts, so I was given
creative space to complete my projects with the social media posts and drafting my blog ideas. I
missed two days during this week because of President’s Day that Monday and a snow-day on
Wednesday, so there was a little bit of catching up with creating content for future projects such
as new ideas for the next episode of the Spy Sneak Peek video series and social posts.

Week of: Monday, February 25, 2019

Responsibilities: I had the chance to get more familiar and gain more knowledge on Excel by
creating a social media publishing calendar to get more organized and professional with my posts
content. I continued to create and schedule more creative content for the museum’s social sites
on Sprout Social, as well as enhancing my research on espionage to provide more information
when it comes to posting tweets, pictures and other posts on social media. And I helped out on a
video shoot for the Spy Museum commercial.
Comments/Reflections: The most amazing experience that happened this week, was that I had
the opportunity to help out the Spy Museum’s commercial video shoot for a feature on the show
20/20. I had the chance to see what really happens behind the camera, which is similar to what I
want to pursue in the entertainment/movie industry in the future. This week was a lot less hectic
because planning creative content was becoming easier from getting more familiar with my daily
routines and using Excel to stay organized while staying up to date with my assignments. But
almost everyday, there is something new to do and experience at the museum.

Week of: Monday, March 4, 2019

Responsibilities: I created content and scheduled posts on Sprout Social for the rest of days in
March. I finalized my plans and actually started writing my blog posts for the museum. I also
worked on my blog draft for a couple days during work hours.
Comments/Reflections: As I finished creating Twitter, Instagram and Facebook posts for the
month of March, I felt very accomplished to get that out the way, so that I could work on some
other materials that I haven’t experienced yet at my internship. I was able to work on my blog
assignment during work hours and I participated at my supervisor’s weekly meetings this week
as well.

Week of: Monday, March 11, 2019

Responsibilities: I worked on some Instagram graphics and visual branding on Adobe
Photoshop. I also fixed a couple of error tweets and content that were already scheduled on
Sprout Social that was requested by my supervisor.
Comments/Reflections: Spring Break was this week, so I missed Monday and Wednesday to go
out of town. But I was able to be back at my internship on Friday which was great. Getting to
work with Adobe Photoshop for the first time at my internship was great practice on what I want
to do in PR, which is to include graphic design, creating advertisements and promotions as my
personal skill.

Week of: Monday, March 18, 2019

Responsibilities: This week, I continued to plan and brainstorm content on Twitter and
Facebook for the month of April. During my work hours at my internship, I had the opportunity
to revise my blog post before I officially sent my final copy to my supervisor. Finally, I was
given an assignment by supervisor to make a top 10 list of local influencers that would be
interested in coming to the Spy Museum’s Influencer Event on May 3, 2019.
Comments/Reflections: I feel very good when I sent my final copy of my blog post to my
supervisor. I was excited to have my own work put on one of the museum’s platforms. As I
continued to brainstorm content ideas for social media, I had to make sure the content was
related to architecture because the month of April is Architecture Month. It was definitely a
challenged because I don’t know a lot of knowledge about Architecture, so I’ve decided to add
content that was related to the new museum building structure to some of the social media posts.

Week of: Monday, March 25, 2019

Responsibilities: This week, I was responsible for putting my first blog post on the museum’s
WordPress page. I completed and sent the visual branding and Instagram graphics I created on
Photoshop to my supervisor. I also started an infographic project I was assigned to do that relates
to the Spy Museum’s building architecture. I took some photography of the new exhibits for a
social media post on Friday of this week. Finally, I scheduled two weeks’ worth of Twitter and
Instagram posts on Sprout Social for the month of April.
Comments/Reflections: It was an overwhelming full week at my internship. Things are getting
busier because the museum opens in less then 50 days. It’s definitely an interesting experience to
see all the departments work whenever I walk around the office floor. It gets very hectic, but I’ve
noticed group participation is a big part of this organization.

Week of: Monday, April 1, 2019

Responsibilities: This week, I continued to work on the Infographic that was assigned to me for
National Architecture Month. The infographic was going to be added for social media content. I
had to fix a couple of minor errors on some Twitter and Facebook posts that were scheduled on
Sprout Social that I created last week.
Comments/Reflections: It was a very calm week at my internship. I’ve noticed that during the
first couple weeks that I started this internship, I was mostly shadowing my supervisor by her
showing me how her position worked as the Communication and Marketing Manager and having
me attend her daily meetings with her. But now, I’m working on creative work assignments that
are very much contributing to the grand opening of the museum and I am very much appreciative
and excited about it.

Week of: Monday, April 8, 2019

Responsibilities: I continued to work on the infographic, fixed a couple of errors and later sent
in my first draft to my supervisor after it was completed. At the end of the week, I was assigned
to do a new assignment which was to create an Instagram graphic evite and an e-blast pitch to
send to the people on the influencer list I created a couple of weeks ago for an upcoming
Influencer event on May 3. I also completed scheduling social media posts for the month of
April on Sprout Social.
Comments/Reflections: Completing scheduled social media posts for the month is a very
satisfying feeling and I always feel 100% accomplished. Having to accomplish an assignment
that takes a lot of time, means that I can start on a brand new assignment. The thing about
working at the International Spy Museum is that it’s always something new to do and it’s always
some event happening in the lobby of my internship site. I’m not saying that I like another
assignment better than making social media content (which I actually enjoy doing), but I love
learning the many materials that are required to do in the communications/PR field. As this being
my first internship position ever, I want to continue exploring the variety of options I have here.
