Air Pollution Crisis in Mongolia

The capital city of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar, suffers from some of the worst air pollution in the world. The country has warmed by 2 degrees due to climate change and the burning of raw coal by half of the population for heating. This has led to thousands abandoning their traditional herding lifestyles for the city each year. Ninety percent of children in the city breathe toxic air daily. The air pollution crisis facing Mongolia is a warning for other rapidly urbanizing nations, as similar problems are emerging worldwide from the types of fuel used and effects of climate change unless action is taken.

Mongolia: A toxic warning to the world

intro : hình ảnh

slide outline:
1. News summary
2.Lesson learnt from the tragic reality
3.New volcabulary
4.Conclusion

slide 1:

All over the world cities are grappling with apocalyptic air pollution but
the capital of Mongolia is suffering from some of the worst in the
world. (hình ảnh)

slide 2:

 The country has already warmed by 2.2 degrees.

 Reason: climate change, raw coal.

 Thousands of people abandon the countryside and the traditional

herding lifestyle every year.
 90% of children are breathing toxic air every day.

Slide 3: Lesson learnt from tragic reality:

1. The apocalyptic air pollution is not always acknowledged by

the people, no matter how devastating it is. That’s why it’s an
urgent problem to educate people on the importance of
protecting the environment surround them. When and only
when people are educated on the harsh reality, actions can be
taken, or else, not only the Mongolians, but also their children,
will have to continue suffocating from the worst air pollution in
the world.
2. Air pollution is a tragedy that no nation deserves to suffer.
Why so? In the long term, toxic air could lead to an epidemic of
lung cancer. In spite of that, there seems to be no way out for
people in Mongolia. Hospitals in the capital of Mongolia,
Ulaanbaatar see hundreds of children everyday, struggling to
breathe. Like Thanh mentioned before, half of the nation used
raw coal since it’s the cheapest way to survive the cold
weather, but it’s choking the entire capital. There are start-ups
that were made, to make air purifiers more affordable, but it’s
just a plaster on the gaping wound.
3. The problems Mongolia is facing are being repeated all over
the world. And unless we get a handle on the types of fuel we
use, rapid urbanization and climate change, this type of
pollution could become a disturbing norm.

slide 5: Conclusion:
We could live with little money, with little food, but how can
we live with little fresh air? Like I mentioned before, air
polution is not a particular problem in Mongolia, but it also
happens in many other countries in the world, including
Vietnam. This is an image that marks the extreme polluted air
in Hanoi has reached its highest on march the 27th.

slide 6:
(show hình hà nội bị ô nhiễm)
The air quality index (AQI) of Hanoi has reached an alarming
level: the lowest: 102, the highest: 197. This is the highest in
Asia, higher than Beijing.

Is this toxic cocktail pushing our civilization to its limit? Will our
children, and children’s chidren ever have a chance to breath
fresh air? Could this be the vision of our future?
