Candidates facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support individual student
learning needs. (PSC 3.4/ISTE 3d)
Artifact: Assistive Technology Implementation Plan
This artifact is an Assistive Technology Implementation Plan created in ITEC 7445, Multimedia
Web Design to outline the details, effects, and results of using assistive technology to influence
the instructional or learning process for a student. My responsibility included creating a plan for
a student to use different tools and evaluating their effectiveness. The digital tools used included
a Dell laptop, headphones/earbuds, and OneNote notebook.
With this artifact, I had the chance to facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive
technologies to support individual learning needs. In order to evaluate the student's needs, I used
the Wisconsin Assistive Technology Initiative (WATI) Assistive Technology Consideration
Guide. The overall suggestion included providing the student with a computer and digital
platforms to maximize learning. I provided direct support for the student with using the
computer, headphones, and Microsoft platform. In addition, I provided advice and tips on how to
better utilize the assistive technology to impact learning. The computer allows the student state
up to date with lessons and assignments. Through numerous observations, it was clear the
addition of the assistive tools helped improve the students’ performance.
Completing this artifact gave me the chance to properly assess, implement, and evaluate
the use of assistive technology tools in the classroom. Prior to this, I was not familiar with
WATI, the lesson plan format, or even assistive technology tools for students. Completing the
artifact helped increase my awareness and skill set as it pertains to identify the need and
providing students will accommodations. If I had to do anything differently it would have been
to widen the scope of assistive tools offered to the student to include some that are not as
common.
This artifact has a direct impact on the student learning and professional development for
teachers. The student understanding and ability to use the computer and digital software,
organization, connections between topics and reading, and overall writing/spelling all improved.
In addition, the teachers supporting the student increased their knowledge of assistive technology
tools in the classroom, thus impacting school improvement. In the future, those teachers can lead
a workshop on their implementation and the impact on student achievement.
