QUEENS WOMAN INDICTED ON ANIMAL CRUELTY CHARGES
Defendant Allegedly Tossed Dog Into Trash Compactor From Seventh Floor;
Chief Assistant District Attorney John M. Ryan, on behalf of Queens District Attorney
Richard A. Brown, today announced that a Far Rockaway woman has been indicted on animal cruelty
charges for tossing a dog down the trash compactor of her seventh floor apartment building in Far
Rockaway, Queens, in January of this year. The dog survived the fall and was not crushed by the
compactor but did sustain multiple injuries.
Chief ADA Ryan said, “The defendant is accused of one of the most unthinkable acts -
tossing an animal into a garbage disposal chute. It is hard to imagine that someone would do
something so cruel. This office remains committed to aggressively enforcing the laws that protect all
animals from those who would harm or abuse a pet.”
The District Attorney’s Office identified the defendant as Dominiqua Parrish, 29, of Beach
th
59 Street, in the Far Rockaway section of Queens. Parrish was arraigned yesterday before Acting
Queens Supreme Court Justice Barry S. Kron on a three-count indictment charging her with attempted
aggravated cruelty to animals, second-degree criminal mischief and overdriving, torturing or injuring
an animal. Justice Kron released the defendant on her own recognizance but ordered her to return to
court on June 26, 2019
According to the charges, on January 29, 2019, at approximately 2:50 a.m. inside of the Beach
th
59 Street location, the defendant was observed on video surveillance throwing a small golden-haired
dog into the hallway from her apartment door. She is further observed allegedly picking up the dog
by the neck and entering the seventh floor garbage room which contains a chute leading to the trash
compactor. When she left the garbage room, she no longer had the animal. Another video camera in
the basement showed a building employee and a Good Samaritan remove the dog from the compactor.
It is further alleged, according to the charges, that when the defendant was questioned, she
admitted, in sum and substance, “I threw the dog down the incinerator because I don’t like him.”
Continuing, according to the charges, the dog sustained cuts and bruises necessitating
treatment by a veterinarian at the ASPCA. Further examination by an ASPCA forensic veterinarian
revealed that the dog also suffered a fractured rib.
The investigation was conducted by police officers of the New York City Police Department’s
101st Precinct.
Assistant District Attorney Kathryn C. Schultz is prosecuting the case under the supervision
of Assistant District Attorneys Nicoletta J. Caferri, Chief of the District Attorney’s Animal Cruelty
Prosecutions Unit, Anthony Communiello, Chief of the District Attorney’s Special Proceedings
Bureau, and Jessica L. Melton and Oscar W. Ruiz, Deputy Chiefs, and under the overall supervision
of Executive Assistant District Attorney of Investigations Peter A. Crusco and Deputy Executive
Assistant District Attorney of Investigations Wilbert J. LeMelle.
It should be noted that an indictment is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed
innocent until proven guilty.
