                                   FOREWORD
    The Micro, Small and, Medium Enterprises, Development Institute (earlier called
SISI), under Ministry of MSME, Govt. of India, Bangalore is one of the prime
organizations in Karnataka, engaged in the promotion and development of Industries in
the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. As a part of the promotional and
developmental activities, the Institute conducts studies on the Status and performance
of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in the State. The District profile is one such
report compiled and updated under District Industry Development Plan of the
Institute assigned by Office of the Development Commissioner (SSI), New Delhi. This
report contains the present status of economy, geographical information, statistical data
relating to MSME‟s in each district, salient features of the progress of the different
sectors of the each district of Karnataka and performance of industries particularly in
Micro, Small and Medium industries.
         I am happy to appreciate the efforts put in by all the officers and staff in

                          Industrial Profile of Tumkur District
 It is a key district of the state of Karnataka situated about 70kms to the North-
 West of Bangalore.
 Spread across 10 Talukas - Tumkur, Koratagere, Sira, Gubbi, Pavagada, Turuvekere,
  Kunigal, Madhugiri, Tiptur & Chikkanayakanahalli.
 Rich in Iron ore Resources: Ready resource of Iron ore in large quantities from the
  hillsides and Major raw material provider to Steel and other allied industries.
 Resources for quarry of building-stones.
 District carries substantial significance in history - Kingdom of great empires like
  Hoysala, Vijayanagara, Mughals and Marathas.
 The district witnessed early stages of the railways system through construction of
  Bangalore City-Tumkur-Gubbi railway track in 1884.
 Place of renowned temples like – Siddhaganga Mutt, Gangadhareshwara temple,
  Siddhalingeswara temple, temple of Narasimha, Channarayana Durga, Devarayana
  Durga,, Namadha Chilume and Chennakeshava temple.

1.3     Availability of Minerals.
Iron is obtained in large quantities from the hillsides and excellent building stone is quarried.
Considerable mineral wealth –Iron Ore, Lime Stone, Graphite, Quartz, Silversand,
Corrundum, Dolomite, Clay, Soap Stone are the major mineral resources available in the
district.

3.10 Potential Areas for new MSMEs
a. Printing cluster at Tumkur: DSR has been approved by GOI, sanctioned Soft
   Intervention to the tune of Rs. Rs. 5.61 lakhs and SPV has contributed Rs.0.79
   lakhs
b. Desicated Coconut powder cluster at Tiptur, Tumkur District: DSR has been
   prepared and forwarded to GOI.

 Madhugiri - Beautiful hill fort built by Vijaynagar dynasty and the place
  where Jain Basadis and temples are also found. This place offers to the
  tourists a view of historical sites. Madhugiri is also well known for its
  Pomegranate cultivation.
 Pavagada Fort - Built by the famous Vijaynagar dynasty‟s king in 1405.
  This fort bears the stamp of the violent battle between Tipu Sultan and
  British rulers.
 Devarayana Durga - Is famous for Lakshmi Narashima Swami Temple.
