Jazz S2019 BandAuditions

Spring auditions for jazz bands and vocal jazz rhythm sections will be held in March. Auditions will include playing scales, a prepared piece, sight reading, and improvisation. Students will have 7-10 minutes to complete the audition depending on their instrument. Sign-up sheets are posted for time slots on Monday evening for saxophones, Tuesday for drums and trumpets, and Wednesday for bass, piano, and guitar in Bruya's office. Materials will be available online. The groups will be directed by various professors and rehearse once or twice a week at different times.

Jazz Bands & VJ rhythm sections

These groups will audition all positions:

Vocal Jazz I (RS) 1:00-1:50 MTWF Prof. Singh
Vocal Jazz II (RS) 3:30-5:00pm T Th (new!) Prof. Singh
Vocal Jazz III (RS) 7:00 – 8:30pm SUN (new) ???

We realize that some students have schedule details that will prevent them from participating in
certain ensembles. It is our hope to work with students to alleviate the scheduling issue so all that
want to can participate.

Auditions for all positions will include these materials:

• Chromatic scale, lowest to highest and back (tone/pitch)
• Jazz head (Somewhere) to be played with a backing track (time/style/dynamics)
• Sightread a passage or two
• Improvise on Bb RHYTHM CHANGES (new) (medium up tempo, 1 chorus)

Each player will have 7 minutes to complete the above audition and decisions will be made based
on the performance.

For rhythm section (10 minutes), there will be additional materials to the above:

• Drums: sightread a big band chart (set ups and fills), play a mambo, samba
and afro-cuban 6/8, play fast & slow swing in 4 & 3, sticks & brushes
• Bass: read and walk a line on changes, and on a straight-8th chart
• Piano: read and comp changes, swing and straight 8th.

Sign up for a time slot on the sheets posted on the Jazz Board (back hallway)!

Monday, March 25th (evening before classes start) in the Jazz Room
7:00pm – 9:30pm, all SAXOPHONES

Tuesday, March 26th (first day of class) in the Jazz Room
11:00am – 1:00pm all DRUMMERS
6:00pm – 8:00pm TRUMPETS
8:00pm – 10:00pm TROMBONES

Wednesday, March 27th in BRUYA’s OFFICE
11:30pm – 3:00pm BASS, PIANO, GUITAR
