Strengthening of Beam in Progress

The document summarizes repair work done on a jetty structure due to chloride-induced corrosion of steel reinforcement. To address time constraints from tidal variations allowing only 6 hours of dry period per stretch, all materials were modified to set within this timeframe and be moisture insensitive. Scaffolding also had to be suspended from the deck with anchors. Numerous retrofitting schemes exist for structures, but the appropriate solution depends on multiple factors and an understanding of local and global structural interactions.

APPROACH & JETTY STRUCTURE
ISSUE

• Chloride induced corrosion of steel, resulting in de-lamination of concrete and

reduction in reinforcement size.
CHALLENGE

• Due to tidal variation, the maximum duration of dry period available for work was 6
hours at a stretch. As a result all the materials were modified to set within that period
and were also insensitive to moisture

• The scaffolding provided had to be suspended from the deck with anchors

• Work had to be carried out round the clock

CONCLUSION

• Numerous retrofit schemes are available for retrofitting.

• A Multiplicity of factors influence the selection of the retrofit

solution.

• Hence, no general rule. Needs good understanding of local and

global level interaction.

• Summary of global-local consequence of retrofit methods give

quick-look guide to potential user.
