Student Teaching Insights

Rachael Kollar reflected on a lesson she taught where she had students work independently to find evidence in a text to support their opinions. She learned that letting students work independently can be effective and that using a timer keeps students on task without rushing. While students learned how to find evidence, she was disappointed by the lack of collaboration and wants future lessons to incorporate more small group work. Moving forward, she will focus on building relationships with students and determining what instructional strategies are most effective for their learning needs.

Student Teaching Lesson Reflection

January 14, 2019

What did I learn through the process of planning and implementing this lesson?
I have learned that setting students off to work on their own is not always a bad thing.
As a teacher, it is okay to step back and let the students work and think about what they are
doing or what they need to do next.

What did my students learn? How do I know what they learned?

Students learned about how to look back in the text for evidence to support their
thinking and opinions. I know what they learned because we checked their work and then I
collected it to have a better look at what they wrote.

To what extent did I meet the needs of all of my learners? What evidence do I have to
support this claim?
Students had plenty of time to complete the independent portion. If they had questions,
I was around to answer them and guide them in the right direction. I do not have evidence to
support this.

What did I learn about teaching and learning this concept or skill?
From teaching, I learned that students want to share their work. They feel proud of
what they did and want others to hear it. I let multiple students share because they wanted to
share.

What did I learn about managing the learning environment during this lesson?
I learned that when students are given clear directions and clear expectations, they will
do what they are asked to do. I also learned that using a timer moves students along without
rushing.
What pleased me about this lesson?
I was very happy with how comfortable I felt giving this lesson because I was very
nervous leading up to it.

What disappointed me about this lesson?

I was disappointed in the lack of collaboration, but because this was my first time
teaching 4th grade, I wanted to get a feel for how they would act, as well as get comfortable
with me teaching. Next time, I would like students to work in partners or small groups.

What alternative instructional and assessment strategies could I have used?

Working in partners or small groups. For assessment strategies, I could ask students how
many mentioned the same thing in their response and tally the number.

What will I do next?

I will continue to work on my relationship with students and figure out what works well
for them and what they might need to practice with more (working in small groups).
