School of Computer Studies: A Flashback from Day One (cont. )
During the 27th of August, the entire school of computer studies (both legacy and foundation students)
gathered at the Mac Room for the iLife Training conducted by Power Mac Center where they talked about
iMovie, iPhoto and garageband wherein they made projects from these applications afterwards to apply all
the things they learned from the said seminar. A week after, Power Mac Center once again conducted a
seminar regarding Adobe CS4 wherein we learned many things about Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver,
Illustrator and other Adobe CS4 products under Adobe PC Suite.

Since Treston International College is still not an official chartered student chapter of ACM, Mr. Ryan Ebardo,
Dean of School of Computer Studies, waited for the registration of thre e student members of ACM as this is a
requirement for Treston International College to be officially chartered by ACM as a student chapter. After
waiting for many days regarding verification of ACM regarding our registration as a student chapter, the
president of TIC ACM received a mail from ACM stating that TIC ACM has been officially chartered by ACM
and is a student chapter starting September 20, 2010, making Treston International College as the fourth
student chapter of the Association for Computing Mac hinery in the entire Philippines.

After the date when TIC ACM has finally declared as an official student chapter, Four official meetings where
conducted and the agenda of the meetings focused on the upcoming launch of the fourth student Chapter
of the Association for Computing Machinery which is entitled as ―The Fourth @ The Fort‖ -The said event will be
the first general assembly of all the members of the Association for Computing Machinery -Treston International
College student chapter.

FACULTY PROFILE: Maria Carolina Abanil (cont.)

After working for years in the corporate world, the teaching ―job‖ bit me. I
had fun in my first teaching ―job‖. Students were great and nice. And when a
better opportunity came, I took it right away for I knew the challenges would
be great.

The day came and everything went well until a ―new‖ professor came. She
was not that flashy. She was in fact so plain, but not ―proper‖. The first thing I
noticed about her is bubbliness. She talks fast and laughs all the time. In fact,
I named her as ―hapinay‖ because everyone seems so happy to see her.

She is also Self-directed; she is comfortable in her profession and disciplined.

She is Self-nurturing; she believes in her capabilities without bragging them.
She is Action-oriented; she has this burning desire to realize, actualize and
build her dream into reality. And with all these qualities – she is a FRIEND and
her name is LYN. Maria Carolina C. Abanil or more fondly known as Ms. Lyn or
Mam Lyn is the most seasoned faculty under the School of Computer Studies.
A humble person, one will have to ask to know her highest educational
qualification, a Master in Science in Computer Science from Ateneo de
Manila University. Lyn is just one of the colors that make the School of
Computer Studies a vibrant rainbow of fun and learning.

GAD GET RE VIE W: W acom’s INTU OS 4 (co nt.)

During the Flavors of Treston event, I was given the chance to try this amazing product at the Mac
booths. Assistants from Power Mac Center showed me the different features of the Intuos4 and later on
allowed me to try it on Photoshop. The trial was a very fun experience, and its performance really
amazed me compared to how other pen tablet brands did.

Let’s take a look at the different specifications and features of Intuos4:

DESIGN AND APPEARANCE
PROS: With a satin black finish and sloping palm rest, Intuos4 is specifically designed to look stylish as well
as provide comfort to any user. The palm rest guarantees ease of use even in long hours of work. Intuos4 also
has an ambidextrous design that allows both right-handed and left-handed users to enjoy the use of
ExpressKeys.
FEEL AND PRESSURE SENSITIVITY
PROS: With superb pen sensor technology and high pressure sensitivity, using Intuos4 is just like
using your favorite pen. From 1,024 levels, pressure sensitivity has doubled to 2,048 levels, giving you
better control and better results. Even the lightest change in pressure can be detected by its new Tip
Sensor.
CUSTOMIZABLE SIDE SWITCHES AND EXPRESSKEYS
PROS: These features greatly enhance the speed of the workflow and provide quick access to
commonly used functions. The customizable side switches are buttons located at the side of the pen,
and can be set to different mouse actions such as ―right-click‖ and ―double-click‖. The ExpressKeys are
also conveniently located near your non-working hand, so your working hand can do all the drawing
and the other one can access the different shortcuts you have assigned to the ExpressKeys.
CONS: The side switches can sometimes be annoying to beginners. Because it is located near
the area where you grip your pen, there are times you accidentally press the side switches.
SOFTWARE INTEGRATION
PROS: Intuos4 is highly compatible with most graphic-editing and digital content creation software such
as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, Corel Painter, Autodesk and more.
CONS: Only leading software applications are integrated with Intuos4 while others may not support
some of its features.

To sum it up, Intuos4 is a highly recommended tool for professional digital artists and even to aspiring
ones. It has greatly improved from its previous version, the Intuos3, and it is the choice of many
experienced artists. The only downside here is the price. Unlike other brands which only costs around P
3,000, the price of the Intuos4 ranges from P 6,000 to P 12,000—almost triple the price. However, with the
great experience and high quality results that are offered by Intuos4, you’ll surely get what you paid for.
