Material 3 / Colors and Shapes
Language goal: practice identifying colors and shapes + shapes with color + pronunciation the shapes
with color
Example colors and shapes choices: red, blue, orange, purple, green, pink, black, yellow, white, brown +
circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, hearts, stars, ovals, diamonds, cones , octagon
Students: 12 students that are 5 year old students coming from Asia to get a better education in English
as a second language
Level: beginners
Objectives/learning outcomes for the material:
Students will practice how to pronounce the colors
Students will practice how to pronounce the shapes
Students will be able to distinguish the shapes from each other
Students will be able to distinguish the colors from each other
Materials to prepare before teaching:
Print copies of each shape individually for each student
Gather 10 markers of each color for every student
One copy of each shape for the teacher except these copies are going to have each shape with
each color
Teachers handout : red/octagon, blue/circles, orange/square, purple/triangle, green/rectangle,
pink/hearts, yellow/stars, black/ovals, brown/cones, white/diamonds
Background Information:
The students are 5 years of age which is a great age for children to absorb the diversity in
languages. Studies show that the older you are the harder it is to absorb and learn a different
language then for a child who doesn't have a lot of knowledge in the language they
understand/ speak is easier for them to learn and absorb the new language that they are
learning. This lesson is a stepping stone to the development of the children's second language
learning. The students will be learning in a way that they will pay attention and have fun all at
the same time. The trick with being a great teacher is knowing what type of group of students
you will be teaching and figure what interest them and try to relate the academic portion and
interest of the students together to work as one .
Instructional Strategy (15 minutes):
Students will be provided with blank copies of the 10 shapes, one copy per shape
Each student will be provided with 10 color markers
Teacher will practice with students on identifying the colors and pronouncing them
Teacher will also practice with the students on identifying the shapes and pronouncing
them
Teacher will let the students know what color goes with what correct shape based off
on the handout
Teacher will pronounce the colors, shapes and allow them to repeat the pronunciation
of the color and shape back
Teacher will go around to help any students if needed while allowing them to color their
shapes
Teacher will have the students repeat the colors and shape after every shape and color
they cover
