Fruit Salad

The document outlines a curriculum experience plan where children will make a fruit salad. The goals are for children to identify different fruits, recognize that fruits have seeds while vegetables do not, and use a spoon to serve themselves fruit. Objectives are for children to experience different fruits through their senses, respond to one-step instructions, and manipulate their hand to hold a spoon. The activity will involve setting up bowls of fruit and guiding children to create their own salads. Vocabulary, questions, and strategies will be used to promote problem-solving and critical thinking about fruits. The experience went well though clearer containers would be used next time after a child mistook bananas for lemons.

INTENTIONS FOR LEARNING

Goal(s): Describe the general or long-term developmental focus of this experience.
Apply the California Preschool Learning Foundation(s) or California Infant/Toddler
Learning and Development Foundation(s) in your narrative statement:
The children will be able to identity the various fruits available and recognize that’s fruits
have seeds where vegetables do not. While using one hand each child will be able to
give themselves fruit using a serving spoon.

Objectives: What specific and observable concepts or skills will the child learn, explore, or
discover? Apply the Preschool DRDP Measure(s) or Infant/Toddler DRDP measure(s) in
sentences beginning with “The child will be able to…” Please include at least 2 observable
objectives.

Children will experience different kinds of fruits through their senses

Children will respond to one step instructions.

Child can manipulate their hand to hold the spoon.

EXPERIENCE PLAN
Activity Description:

I’m going to set up bowls full of fruit and guide the children into creating their own fruit
salad.

*Please photograph or video-record this experience and collect anecdotal notes.

Invitational Set-up: How will the experience be presented to invite participation or provoke
interest? (Provide a photograph of the set-up).

Specific vocabulary, teaching strategies, and open-ended questions you will keep in mind
(Use your Curriculum Frameworks or other course resources to list specific ways you will
promote problem-solving and critical thinking beyond a simple recall of facts):

I asked about fruits and vegetables. I asked for the children to tell me which fruits where
which, and describe their taste. I showed them the seed inside each fruit.

How is this experience personalized (i.e. modified) to meet the varying developmental and
individual needs of the children in your class? (e.g., older children, younger children,
specific needs or interests?)

*Please photograph or video-record this experience and collect anecdotal notes.

Specific materials needed that are not already accessible to children:

Serving spoons, fruit, and serving bowls

REFLECTION/EVALUATION
What did you do well?

I felt over all the activity went well. All of the children partook in the activity and all decided
to eat the fruit as a group. We were able to discuss about different fruits and what makes a
fruit as planned.

How did the children respond to the experience presented? (Describe your observations of
children’s words and actions) What worked? What was difficult? Were there any
surprises?
The children seemed excited to participate. All of the fruit seemed to be
normal and familiar to them. I did not add too many choices and left it simple. I think
that was a good idea over all. No one was overwhelmed. At the end of the activity
almost all of the fruit was eaten. Thank goodness I brought enough!

What additions or changes would you make if you were to do this activity again? What did
the children teach you (e.g. about curriculum, teaching, or children)?

If I was doing the activity again I would try to make it more about tasting the fruit and
using your senses. One of my bowls was not clear and Wyatt said “I’d eat all of the fruit
except the lemons.” I was very confused since I did not choose lemons for this activity
when I realized that one of the containers wasn’t thick glass and was a white not see
through container. He thought the bananas were lemons. I realized after that I should
probably keep all of my containers consistent and keep to see through ones!
