Grade 3 Reading Comprehension Plan

The standard lesson plan is for a 3rd grade reading comprehension lesson. The 16 students will read an article about tigers and write down why they think the article was written along with 5 supporting facts. The teacher will demonstrate by reading an article aloud and stating the reason for writing it along with example supporting facts. Students will then read independently, taking notes on interesting points, questions, and unknown words to look up definitions for later. English language learners and dyslexic students can use iPads to have the article read aloud, while gifted students can find additional interesting facts beyond the main assignment.

I. Describe the Class
Grade 3
16 students; 2 of which are ELL, 1 who is dyslexic, and 2 gifted students

II. Subject/Skill:

Reading Comprehension: Understanding what the text is about.

III. Objective(s)
Performance/Behavior: Students will find why the article of tigers was written.
Condition: Students will read the article, write down why they think it was written and write down facts to support
their reason.
Criteria: Students will have at least 5 supporting facts as to why the article was written.
IV. Procedures
1. The objective is for students to demonstrate that they understand what they are reading.
2. They will come across words that they have learned the definitions to. The lesson is to come up with a
reason on why someone is writing an article and presenting facts they have learned to support their reason.
The purpose of the lesson is so they can apply definitions to vocabulary words they have learned from past
lectures.
3. I will demonstrate students by picking a different article reading it aloud and give my reason as to why I
think it was written.
4. Then I will ask them for facts in the article that support my reason.
5. They will then read on their own and take down notes on things they found were interesting in the article.
They can also write questions and highlight words they do not know the meaning of. They can later go back
and find the definition for these words.

V. Materials

Article, vocabulary words, paper, pencil, power point, electronic dictionaries,

VI. Grouping Structures

Classroom setting, assignment to be done individually

VII. Modifications

English language learners and dyslexic students will be able to use Ipads that read the
article out loud so they can follow along. This will help them by hearing and seeing the
word at the same time. Gifted students can go beyond the assignment and find more
interesting facts about the subject in the article.
