Slide #1: Ok, so I’m not going to sugarcoat the fact that you have to fully understand the concept of
archetypal criticism. Archetypal criticism, one of the three types of literary criticisms, focuses on three
points of study, characters, images, and situations, completely different from the other two types: gender
society and marxism.
Slide #2: Now, I’m assuming most you are familiar with the fairytale of Pinocchio. But if you’re not,
Pinocchio is a puppet that goes through trials and tribulations eventually to become a real boy. And yes, it
may seem like a very black and white storyline, but it’s also incredibly archetypal, having images,
characters, symbols, and patterns people recognize.
Slide #3: With characters, we have the character of Pinocchio, the puppet who wanted to become a real
boy, the hero. Pinocchio faced multiple trials including almost being burned to death, turning into a
donkey, and many more. But, in the end, Pinocchio reflected on his mistakes and rebuilt his relationship
with Gepetto, his father, as well as his surroundings.
Slide #4: Now specifically with Pinocchio’s challenges, we have the technical minor trials such as almost
being burned to death by a puppet master and being attacked by two hooded bandits, but we also have the
‘journey defying’ tribulations. The most important one being trapped inside a shark’s mouth because it
revealed the true reasoning as to why Pinocchio was on his journey.
Slide #5: Furthermore, we have the sage, the stern, but loving authority figure, in this case. Gepetto, the
technical father of Pinocchio. Not only did Gepetto make this puppet portraying human traits, but he also
nurtured it as if it were his own child. Gepetto had both motherly and fatherly traits, being a homemaker
while still punishing Pinocchio when needed.
Slide #6: Straying from characters, is the use of images, in which suggested in the setting is the use of
water. Water plays an important role in the fairytale as it is the place that Gepetto and Pinocchio came to a
revelation. Without the including of the ocean, they wouldn’t have been swallowed by a shark and
resolved their issues towards the resolution.
Slide #7: And with becoming a real boy as well as turning into a donkey comes the idea of
metamorphosis. Pinocchio is in the process of changing shape and form and must take position in the here
and now for its effect of things to come. With that, in terms of the story, not only did he realize his
mistakes from becoming a donkey, but also reflected on his actions when he became a real boy.
Slide #8: And not only does his nose change, but his character does to. In terms of the hero’s journey,
Pinocchio came to a revelation about himself towards the end. Once him and Gepetto escaped the shark’s
mouth, and Gepetto was half dead because of hypothermia, Pinocchio nurtured Gepetto as well as treated
others with the same mentality. As said by Gepetto himself, “When bad boys become good, their look
changes along with their lives”.
Slide #9: In conclusion, practically any story can be identified through many angles, like the archetypal
version of Pinocchio. Pinocchio being portrayed as the hero, going through many challenges and
temptations until he realized the real purpose of his long journey. Thank you!
