 1. Open the engine Bowling or (FM) open the maintenance gate (radiator grill) of the driver’s cab.
 2. Unscrew the cap for the expansion tank slowly by about half a turn to release the pressure.
 3. Remove the cap completely; The coolant has to reach the lower inner edge of the filler neck.
 4. Set the heating to maximum temperature.
 5. Refill coolant if required; Observe the specifications for operating materials.
 6. Replace the cap for the expansion tank and close it fully.
 7. Let the engine run for 2–3 minutes at different speeds.
 8. Check the coolant level again and refill coolant if required.
 9. Close the expansion tank.
 1. nscrew the cap for the cooling system slowly by about half a turn to release the pressure.
 2. Remove the cap completely.
 3. Open the control valve of the heating.
 4. Attach the outlet hose to the drain neck of the radiator.
 5. Cover the lines etc. underneath the coolant drain plug and place a sufficiently large container underneath.
 6. Open the drain and let the coolant run off; Clear any drain openings that are possibly blocked by
 sediment.
 7. Insert the coolant drain plug to the engine again, using a new seal.
 8. Screw in other drain plugs using new seals.
Filling coolant
 1. Start the engine and let it run at different speeds for approx. 1 minute.
 2. Refill coolant with the appropriate formula to the lower (inner) edge of the filler neck.
 3. Switch off the engine and close the expansion cylinder.
1. Open the water drain and the bleeder screws of the pre-filter and
collect the draining water-diesel mixture in a container.
2. Remove the filter housing 2.
3. Remove the water separator 3 from the filter housing 2 and clean
or replace it.
4. Reassemble the filter in reverse order. Use the new gaskets.
Screw the filter housing firmly onto the filter head 2 by hand.
5. Close the water outlet and fill the filter using the hand pump 1.
Close the drain plug.
6. Let the engine run for about 1 minute (automatic bleeding of
residual air in the fuel system). If the engine dies or does not start
the system has to be bled manually.
7. Check the fuel system for tightness while the engine is running.

1. Attach the flywheel tool (special
tool Mercedes-Benz 904 589 04

the flywheel housing.
2. Use chalk to make a starting
mark on the belt.
3. Check the condition of the
multi-V belt section by section.
Check the multi-V belt section by
section using the flywheel tool
until you have reached the mark
again.
4. Remove the flywheel tool.
5. Screw the cover cap of the
inspection hole back onto the
flywheel housing (25 Nm).

Only adjust valve clearance when the engine is cold. Even if the engine has only been operated for a short period of time at least 30 minutes m
   1. Remove the cylinder head caps:
Remove the screws 2 of the cylinder head cap 1.
Remove the cylinder head caps; Proceed in reverse order to replace the cylinder head
        caps.
   2. Unscrew the cover for the inspection hole on the flywheel housing.
   3. Attach the engine rotating tool Nr. 904 589 04 63 00 (special tool) to the inspection hole.
Adjusting valve play
Adjust the valves to 2 different crank shaft positions.

   1. Use the engine rotating tool to rotate the flywheel until the 5th cylinder is at overlap
TDC (1st cylinder on ignition TDC). Then rotate the 1st cylinder to overlap-TDC (5th
   cylinder on ignition TDC).
   2. Adjust the valves according to the table above.
   3. To adjust valve clearance release the locknut 2; adjust the clearance by turning the set
   screw 1.
   4. Measure valve clearance between tilting lever and valve bridge using a feeler gage
(arrow). You have to be able to pull the feeler gage through with slight resistance.
   5. Tighten the locknut 2 again ( 50 Nm).
   6. Check the valve clearance again and correct it if required.
