Abstract
Positive Reinforcements can increase the probability of not only desirable behavior but
also undesirable behavior in the ESL classroom. Therefore, as an ESL teacher, it is essential to
create a safe environment through positive reinforcement for my students to learn English. Using
positive communication with parents, weekly prizes, stickers and even choosing student of the
week gives them the recognition that they are looking for by learning English.
This quantitative action research is created to investigate if the use of positive
reinforcement promotes learning in the ESL classroom. This action research project aims to
demonstrate that positive reinforcement is an effective technique to promote learning in the ESL
classroom and how it motivates the ESLs in Puerto Rico. Quantitative data collection is obtained
by using questionnaires of parents and students, and an observation process to compare findings
from the convenience sample. This ILP is designed for one sample group of second grade of the
Department of Education at Quebrada Grande elementary school at Naguabo, Puerto Rico.
With this study I expect to find out, by researching actively, conducting a study, and
collecting data, if with a positive reinforcement a teacher can promote learning in the ESL
classroom. The results of this investigation could help teachers of English as a second language as
well as parents, and students understand that positive reinforcements promote learning in the ESL
classroom.
