Reducing Cell phone exposure: Creating a thin film that successfully reduces the exposure of
cell phone radiation.
Research Question:
Where is Rf radiation most located and can placing a thin film deposited with pure elements or
composite materials limit cell phone radiation exposure to the human body?
Hypothesis:
Cell phone radiation has been linked to many health problems, identify where the Rf radiation is
being emitted and using thin films deposited with pure elements or composite materials reduce
the radiation exposure to the human body.
Background/History of the issue:
There have been many studies done on rats that have linked cell phone radiation with health
problems or also known as Rf radiation. Rf radiation is a form of non-ionizing radiation. The
range of the radiation between 3Khz to 300GHz. In one study it found that more cell phone
radiation is absorbed by kids brain compared to the adult brain. This is extremely concerning
since nowadays everywhere you see small kids and children are using a phone. There have been
many reports saying that cell phone radiation is safe and does not affect the human body. The
problem with this statement is cell phones have a recently became popular and it will take time
to see their harmful effects. The technology I will use to prevent radiation exposure is thin films.
Thin films are extremely thin normally from nanometers to nanometers film deposited on a
substrate. That substrate is normally silicon. By depositing pure elements or compoiste material
on a silicon wafer, and placing the the the film in a cell phone, you could limit the exposure and
change the way your cell phone looks like.
Rationale:
I feel like this problem with Rf raditaion is important now more than ever. Every time I am at a
restaurant or at a shop I always observe a young child watching or playing a game on their
parents' phone. If the children brain absorbs the radiation greater than the adult brain it is a huge
health problem since we do not exactly what type of health problems may arise later in their life.
By creating a device that will prevent radiation exposure yet still allow kids and adults to use cell
phones is my goal. I want everyone to enjoy the technology we use every day however I want
everyone to be safe from any unsafe radiation.
Basis of Hypothesis
I based my hypothesis on using thin films to limit the exposure of Rf radiation. I did this because
I believe thin films are the perfect solution to this problem because of how thin they are. Thin
films also won't obstruct the design of the phone that engineers and designers spent hours on
designing it. I based my hypothesis on thin films because many elements or composite materials
can be deposited and reduce radiation.
Operational definiation:
● Rf: Radiofrequency
● Non-ionizing: any type of electromagnetic radiation that does not have the energy to
completely remove a electron from a atom or molecule.
● Substrate: a solid substance where another substnace is applied
Descriptors Used for Literature Search:
● Cell phone radiation
● Harmful affects of Rf radiation
● Thin film deposition
