When we want to express permission, prohibition (not allowing something), obligation or no obligation
we use modal verbs.

Modals, modal verbs, modal auxiliary verbs, modal auxiliaries are helping verbs which are used together
with the other verbs to express permission, obligation and prohibition.

Uses of Modals

1. Permission

Modal Examples

Can Can I borrow your pen?

Could Could you bring this to the office tomorrow?

May May I follow you back on tweeter?

2. Obligation

Modal Example

Have to I have to work on Sunday.

Must I must hand my thesis tomorrow.

3. Prohibition

Modal Example

can't You can't drive in this country unless you are over eighteen.

musn't You mustn't use your phone in class.

Exercises: Underline the appropriate modal auxillary verbs inside the parenthesis.
