Evolution of Music
By Libby Dunne
Music has come a long way.
Globally, we have collectively gone through billions of albums and
trends in music. Music goes way back and was used in homes to tell
Stories like folk songs.
Music started to develop from the 16th century onwards.
We had the Baroque period from 1600 to 175o with
Composers such as Vivaldi, and Classical music in 1700-
1900 with composers such as Beethoven, Mozart and Bach.
At this time many different genres of music began mapping
worldwide.
50’s - 60’s
In the early 1990’s, the development of
technology helped music develop.
During the 40’s and 50’s, rock and roll
was developed. We saw growth in the
electric guitar and big stars, like Elvis,
became extremely popular.
At the beginning of the 1960’s, pop and
rock and roll continued and towards the
end of the decade we saw developments
in more teen pop and art/classical rock.
Furthermore, the 1960’s saw funk, soul,
R&B and Latin music rising. We see
artists in the UK such as The Beatles, the
best selling band in history, and Stevie
Wonder and Aretha Franklin in America.

Music Today
Music is used to express emotions and to give people a voice.
We use it to sooth, psych up, sadden, anger and cheer
ourselves up. We use music as a platform to make our voices
and opinions heard through a melody and lyrics. Music helps
people in so many different way — it is used in therapy,
for relaxation and to explore emotions.
Our society would suffer and would not be the same if we did
not have music.
““Without music, life would be a
blank to me.”
–Jane Austen
