Introduction
Internet and digital networks had played a promising role in every aspect of humanity in a global scale. The
increasing number of internet users and the limitless possibilities brought by the internet directly affects the
social community, politics, economy and even the intercontinental behavior between states and multinational
companies ( Nica, 2015). Thus, in 2019, it has become a challenge for each nation to attain a sustainable link
between Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the internet and sustainable development.
Starting users of 40 million users during the 1990’s, a surging number of users are accounted through out the
years and as of January 1, 2019, there were already 4,100,667,287 internet users around the world. A significant
breakthrough, compared to the 3.42 billion users recorded at the end of 2016. These data excludes children
under five year old, which we know by fact that are capable and already using the internet in limited occasions,
still we can say that humankind is now almost connected with internet (Castells, 2015).
Study reveals that ninety-five percent (95%) (Martin & López, 2011) of all the information that exists in the
planet is digitized and it can be accessed through the internet and other digital platforms. This makes the
internet a decisive technology in the Information Age. Triggering all kind of perceptions in the world in all
aspects that are susceptible to change.
From individuals to groups, the internet and digital networks creates a domino effect of positive and negative
effects into the social, political, economic and military behavior of states, multinational companies and even the
terrorists. In this research paper, impacts and an analysis will be supported by facts and established by studies
and research throughout the world in a comprehensive global perspective.
Analysis
Social
From 2.46 billion social media users last 2016, in 2019, there is an estimate of around 2.77 billion social media
users worldwide (United Nations, 2016). Practically, social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
originally aimed to bridge the gap of communication and to defy distance. In addition, it was empowered to
spread awareness and unity. However, the evolving world of social media led to abuse and misuse, leaving
issues of high concern in the global community. These issues do not only affect the individual itself but the
community as a whole and all its parts in it.
As much as the good ones, negativity is all over the internet. When information appears on the internet, it
borrows a mask of importance in normal parlance. For an ordinary user, who still lacks internet literacy, all
information on the web are important and true. This is where misuse and fraud comes in. Search engines that
processes in an unpredictable algorithm logistic are gradually becoming a threat to scholarly knowledge.
Researchers lose their gatekeeper function of deciding which information is important and which are relevant
(Zeite, 2014). Social and personal safety is also a great concern today. The presence of inappropriate and
unfiltered materials all over the internet are not good for teenagers and children. Although 90% of the apps are
asking for permission to access your contacts, data and photos, hacking have been rampant nowadays, where
cases of identity theft are in eyeing number.
Internet makes societies strong, developed and more intelligent because of its accessibility anywhere and
anytime. By this, it affects us how we live our lives, from what to eat, the way we feel and even how we choose
our partners. People nowadays easily adapts to the trend and change behavior and belief, influences by people
they did not even meet. Thus, we can say social media allow, create or spread “epidemics” of good and bad
things like obesity, smoking, substance abuse, voting patterns and as much as organics, zero-plastic use, animal
welfare, child-friendly practices and all kinds of positivity (Christakis & Fowler, 2009). Social impact can be
2
reduced in words in order to cover the below requirement.?????????????
Economy
Positive impacts of internet includes, facilitating global communication in seconds, exposing remote areas with
the civilization and has a creating a big impact in e-commerce as the trend is on the verge. The Neilsen
Company, a US based company that provide global measurement and data analytics reported the 2019 statistics
of ecommerce in over 100 countries, comprising 90% of the world’s population. Online shopping is expected to
reach $100 Billion by 2025, grabbing 20% of the total grocery market. Multinational companies use social media
as a marketing tool to improve promotion, sales, corporate social responsibility as well as charity. Ecommerce
exceeded the estimate sales, that it reached $3.45 Trillion worth of sales in 2019. United Kingdom (UK) ranked
as the highest ecommerce sales, followed by China and Norway where growing global online retail sales reached
8.8% of total retail spending in 2018 (Nielsen, 2019). Statistics showed that a ration of one is to four (1:4) people
continue to shop online, once a week, which US business underestimated because only 28% of small business
are engaged in online selling. The impressive growing number of online shoppers, eyes for greater profits as it is
estimated that in US alone, there will be 224 million online shoppers by 2020 because 71% of shoppers believe
that they can have better deals when they shop online.
In the business sector, it was a constant struggle for banks and financial institutions to secure cashless
transactions and mobile banking. Consumers and clients are not guaranteed full security with their accounts
(Weber, 2010). Online accounts are prone to glitches, system bugs and hackers. In this age, if you are not
cautious enough, one tweet, one virus, or one clever blog or video that is spread over, can kill a product, a
website or even damage a company’s share price.
Harnessing new technology with use of internet boost the efficiency of oil and gas industry. Latest technologies
helped the oil and gas sector reduce capital expenditures by up to 20 percent and cut the operating costs in
upstream by 3 to 5 percent and by about half that in downstream (Choudhry, Mohammad, & Tan, 2016). The
trend of using enablers greatly helped oil and gas companies to have better performance. McKinsey’s research
calculated the potential impact of digital technologies on more than 100 use case and identifies three
categories. The three categories are operations of the future, reservoir limits and digital-enabled marketing and
distribution. As a result, there is a potential impact of using internet and digital technology becuase oil and gas
companies reduce their operational costs as much as 25% and improved their revenue by 10% because these
companies have a tool now to understand more their consumer habits, cut maintenance costs through
predicative maintenance and know the maximum capacity of their resources. Economy impact can be reduced
in words in order to cover the below requirement.?????????????
Politics
Internet has caused different consequences in the area of politics thru framing mechanisms. In the present time,
there are many debates regarding the political consequences of the internet in nondemocratic regimes or called
the Arab spring and countries like United States, where internet are claimed to increase political polarization
(Farrell, 2012). The three mechanisms are as follows: first, the mechanism that links internet to politics in terns
of costs of collective action. Second, links the internet to politics in terms of homophilous sorting and third,
Internet may make preference falsification.
The first mechanism simply implies that internet makes costs cheaper in politics, specially during campaign
season. Since internet is accessible, it is cheaper now to communicate with a bigger audience and inform the
public with your plans and platform. Through collective action, coordination, implementation of laws and
3
projects of the government is easier and faster (Shirky, 2009). Even if the cheaper cost of every political
undertaking is clear, authors claim that this has long-term consequences. Although the public nowadays are
enticed of showy platforms in digital platforms, a study reveals that it create weak ties in the long run, because
at the end, the public are still after the real and concrete action of politicians and officials. Therefore, internet
does not really have a beneficial impact on politics (Gladwell). The second mechanic implies that the individuals
with the same views, forms cluster with each other. Homophily visibly occurs as internet data miners, suggests
results within your interest and shared preferences. As much as this shapes once views and political stand by
social influence in form of clusters, it proved in extreme cases that problem solving among diverse elements in a
cluster ends up difficult while making one more certain of their own belief. Third, there is preference
falsification. Internet causes voters to conceal their true preferences on their bets. For instance in Nigeria, it was
revealed that social media did not make an impact as much as newspaper do in framing the motivation,
diagnosis and prognosis of protest (Tufekci, 2012).
Military behavior of states:
(you mentioned the impact of social, political, economic and YOU FORGOT TO highlight the impact oN military
behavior of states)
Terrorism (it is good to highlight all of this about terrorism , however you forgot to highlight the IMPACT on
terrorist groups and individuals?”
My advise to brief the below paragraph and highlight the impact!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In 2012, Secretary General of the United Nations said : “The Internet is a prime example of how terrorists can
behave in a truly transnational way; in response, States need to think and function in an equally transnational
manner.”
According to the United Nations report, the internet have been widely used to promote and support acts of
terrorism from the propaganda , which includes, recruitment and incitement, up to the training, financing,
planning until executing. For instance, a magazine “Inspire” with a digital copy has a bomb-making article entitle:
Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of your Mom, this articles teaches readers how to build and redesign IED weapons.
Online training is now conducted in a training camp in Muzaffarabad in Mumbai that makes trainings are
effective and less risk of exposure. Terrorist also learn how to do “dead dropping’, this is an email constructed
but not sent, instead saved as a draft. This cannot be hacked by American and British force. New York Police
Department reported terrorists used drones, with the guide of google maps and digital blue prints for attack and
surveillance because this is convenient, accurate and less risk exposure (Logan & Perez, 2019). In lieu of this,
States have been developing their own counterterrorism techniques with the aide also of the internet. Video
streaming cites play tutorials on how to make a bomb ‘phony’ and use false military movements as a trap.
multinational corporations
It is not clear for me the impact on multinational corporations, as required in the given instructions. Please
highlight or add it.
General comment: I obsever that the social impact is one page and same scenario with economy impact,
However the other impacts are half page.

PLEASE MAKE BALANCE in words between the different impacts. Thank you
Conclusion
Please increase the words of conclusion or reduce from the main body of report.
The current situation, the main body of this research paper is 1681 words and the conclusion 207 words
The conclusion should be from 330 words to 255 words (as mentioned in the given instructions 15-20%) if we
keep the main body with 1681 words.
The internet and digital networks are double edge weapon. Whether social, political, economic, military and
even in terrorism, it has its own set of pros and cons, depending on the literacy of each user and how
comprehensive a state is to educate its people and implement its laws. Internet is a two-way element that it
would not produce impacts by itself. The impacts are created by man and however improve, destroy, create or
develop by the internet. In this modern age, vigilance and literacy are must-have skills of every user because this
is the only way to protect ourselves from perceived danger of knowing what is fact or fraud, relevant or not. The
advent of technology makes everything possible that it create an open-ended form of social organization that
could make the best or worse in humankind. What the world needs today are facts, despite of the arising frauds
and masks all over the web. This is possible, in the interest of progress and sustainability among nations, if we
take a cumulative effort to know and understand how culture, organization and technology works through
scholarly research. And only then, we will be able to unmask and can see through the ripples of internet and
digital networks.
