THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Today our society is becoming more open to the idea of liberalism. Our society doesn’t

only comprise of males and females rather it outgrew into a diverse category, where different

sexuality has emerged through time. The lesbians, gays, bisexuals and the transgender or in short

the LGBT community. The population has dramatically increased in relation to the ideology that

we humans are free, and shouldn’t be dictated as it is our freewill and we live in a democratic

country. But as the said community becomes larger and larger in size, the number of people who

refute their idea also increases as it isn’t widely accepted, people have different perspectives that

come about it and that it also violates social norms and values.

Though the community is being denounced by many, they still persist and exhibit their

skills and talents to prove that they are not the plague of the society that the masses presume of.

It’s not easy to conceal your real sexual preference, that’s why many are being unfolded either

by own decision or influence. Despite the fact that they are frequently despised, they remain

happy and live their lives like any other, and that’s what’s good, they never let anything affect

them, and this character they possess often becomes a drawback. Overall, these groups still needs

respect as they’re humans, and they have also rights.

 So the main purpose of this research is to identify what problems are the LGBT

community facing hitherto and currently? And how do they manage to live the world, knowing

that not everyone is sympathetic towards their existence in the society.

Statement of the Problem

This study was intended to discover the problems being faced by the LGBT Community

especially; it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. The reasons in relation to the problem.

2. The LGBTs recommendations regarding the problem.

Significance of the Study

This research could relatively serve the following.

The LGBT Community. This research will help them to be aware about others

situations and know how important their idea is within their community. This research

would also help them realize that they should be properly involved for strengthening their

existence, to confront the complications set forth by the critics for the betterment of all,

and to develop a harmonious living.

The Researchers. This would be beneficial for researchers as a basis for their

ideas about LGBT problems. And would also serve as a related literature which is

basically needed for a future research.

 The Young people. The primary purpose of this research is to help them develop

the ability to foresee a sexually diverse society and the consequence of its emergence in

an interdependent world.

Scope and Delimitation

This study was conducted during the third trimester of the school year 2016-2017 at

University of Cordilleras, Governor Pack Road, Baguio City to identify the problems

encountered by the LGBT community. It also tries to identify their reasons and

recommendations. We chose 50 respondents from either of the following: Lesbians, Gays,

Bisexual and Transgender.

Definition of Terms

To facilitate comprehension of the study, the following terms were defined operationally.

LGBT Community- also referred to as the gay community, is a loosely defined grouping of

lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) and LGBT-supportive people, organizations, and

subcultures, united by a common culture and social movements.

Lesbian- a female homosexual: a female who experiences romantic love or sexual attraction to

other females.

Gay- In modern English, gay has come to be used as an adjective, and as a noun, referring to the

people, especially to gay males, and the practices and cultures associated with homosexuality. By

the end of the 20th century, the word gay was recommended by major LGBT groups and style

guides to describe people attracted to members of the same sex

Bisexual- a romantic attraction, sexual attraction, or sexual behavior toward both males and

females, or romantic or sexual attraction to people of any sex or gender identity; this latter aspect

is sometimes alternatively termed pansexuality.

Transgender- are people who have a gender identity or gender expression that differs from their

assigned sex. Transgender people are sometimes called transsexual if they desire medical

assistance to transition from one sex to another.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study used quantitative and qualitative, survey design in determining the problems

encountered by the LGBT Community. To distinguish their problems, multiple choices are used

in the questionnaires and were answered by the respondents quantitatively. For the reasons and

recommendations, answered qualitatively; to distinguish them in particular.

Research Environment

This study was conducted at University of Cordilleras an institution in

Baguio City within the province of Benguet .

Subjects of the Study

The respondents of this study were 50 persons included in the LGBT community,

respectively all from Baguio City.

Research Instruments

This study used questionnaires adapted from the given topic itself which is the problems

encountered and faced by the LGBT Community. The entries thereby are queries about the

complication, rationale and the proposal.(3 items, 1 multiple choice, 2 essays.)

Data Gathering Procedure

In the conduct of this study, the researchers asked the 50 members of the LGBT

Community to answer the survey questionnaires based on the given topic research to determine

the complication, rationale and their proposal. The results of this test were recorded so as to have

valid and reliable information. The data were tallied, analyzed, interpreted according to specific

problems set forth.

Data Analysis

To answer the first problem, the data were examined using the survey statistic- counts.

The over-all scores determined the major problem. To answer the second problem, the rationale

and their proposal were analyzed.

DATA PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

This chapter presents two main topics of the present study. (1) The totality of respondents

answers in chart. (2) Their reasons and recommendations.

1. The totality of respondent’s answers in table.

The researchers have found that many of the respondents commonly experience rejection.

By providing a simple questionnaire, the researchers are not only trying to determine their

problems, rather we are also aiming to know what are their perspectives and testimonials.

And the totality of scores in chart 3.1 shows the respondents’ major problem. Their answers

varied from their past encounters and it only showcases that the society still doesn’t fully

accept their actuality.

2. Their reasons and recommendations

Generally, the respondents’ reason and recommendation boils down into one matter.

That is, people see them differently and that they can’t reconcile with, for who they are, the

way they dress, the way they act, the way they express themselves. Those are the main

reason why they are degraded, despised, bullied and rejected. And that they recommend that

they also need to be respected, treated and seen equally like others in all aspects. And not that

just because they differ with what is common, their sexuality to be specific doesn’t mean that

they should be considered and viewed as a plague in the society.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary

The study investigated the problems faced by the LGBT community, their rationale and

commendation. The accumulated scores by the different respondents are presented in chart,

scrutinized and analyzed reconstructed as an essay.

The study involved the counts of scores by the respondents, the ranking of problems, the

analyzation of the reasons and recommendation thus: qualitative and quantitative research

method survey was used.

The study arrived at the following findings:

1. The respondents sexual orientations and gender identities are foremost the problem to the

degree of social rejection.

2. The community wishes to implement that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people can

live openly without discrimination and enjoy equal rights, personal autonomy, and freedom of

expression and association. And that they shouldn’t be detested with the basis of having different

preference of sexuality.

Conclusion

With the present findings, we arrived at the conclusion that:

People once thought of gay rights as “something that can be cured” or a “mental illness”,

but now in modern day, people are looking more into biology, psychology, history, and cultural

variations of sexual practice and identity. Not only is gay rights a sensitive topic for people

today, but especially for the homosexuals who are discriminated now.

Some people have no problem with mentally, emotionally, and physically hurting a

person because of their taste in the same sex. Therefore, they should include the protection of

individual rights and freedoms with a goal of liberty and justice for all.

Recommendation

The LGBT community are humans too. And that we, as human beings, should be

involved in the idea of supporting rights and equality for LGBT individuals because they are one

of us no matter what they believe. We should change the way society thinks because society is an

opinion, not a fact. The declaration of independence gives “liberty and justice for all”. We can

help by being involved in LGBT parades and/or being kind to a hemosexual person. Participating

in these events does not mean that you are lesbian, gay, bi, or a transgender. It shows that you

stand for equality and equal rights and supporting everybody being their own person.
