Pirn Winding Machine Guide

This document describes an experiment on the passage diagram and parts of a pirn winding machine. The objectives are to understand the operation, setup, and different parts of the machine. Key parts identified include the input cone, guides to control the yarn path, a ceramic tensioner, traverse guide, pirn package output, and warp. The working involves yarn being wound from the input cone onto the pirn package via the various guides and tensioner, with the traverse guide providing reciprocating motion.

Experiment Name: Study on passage diagram and different parts of pirn winding
machine.

Introduction:

A pirn or quill is a weft bobbin that is placed inside a shuttle in shuttle weaving. As the
shuttle travels back and forth across the width of the shuttle loom, the weft yarn is unwound
from the pirn through the eye (for ordinary shuttle) or slot (for automatic shuttle) of the
shuttle and lay in the shed. The yarn on the quill is tapered at one end such that the yarn with
drawl takes place continuously without entanglement. The machines that are used to wind
quill are called “quillers” or pirn winding machines. These machines are automatic, which
means that when the quill is filled, it is doffed and an empty pirn is placed on the spindle
automatically.

Objectives of the experiment:

a) To know about the operation of pirn winding machine.

b) To know about the setup of pirn winding machine.
c) To know about different parts using in pirn winding machine.
d) To know about yarn path diagram of pirn winding machine.

Working principle:

Parts used in pirn winding machine:

Cone: This type of package contains a single
thread which is laid on the package at an
appreciable helix angle so that the layers cross
one another to give stability. Cones are
symmetric, tapered forms made of paper or
plastic that hold over 5,000 meters of cross-
wound thread. Cones provide good off-winding
performance for high-speed machines. Cones are
the most economical packages for sewing threads
in situations when thread consumption is high and
production runs are long with limited shade
changes.
Yarn Guide:Yarn guides are the one of the
helping instrument to control the yarn path. Yarn
guides are required to perform the winding or
unwinding process properly. In every operation
where yarns are transferred from one package to
another, yarn guides are required there.

Types of yarn guides: There are two types of yarn

guides which are used during withdrawal or
unwithdrawal of yarn. They are:
 A yarn end is required for threading: It takes
extra time in threading. So, speed of operation
is increased. The yarn experienced more
friction. Shape of the yarn guides are may be
as follow: 1. Ceramic insert type 2. Trumpet
type 3. Bush or roller type

2
 A yarn end is not required for threading:
Threading is very easy. So, the speed of
operation increased. The yarn experienced less
friction. Shape of the yarn guides may be as
follow: 1. Pig tail 2. Slotted type 3. Post type
Ceramic tensioner:

Travesre guide: By the help of this motion moving parts of a machine is passed a fixed distance&
with in a several time it back its starting position. Reciprocating motion is given by the help of cam. A
traversing rod is connected with the cam. By the relation of the cam the moving parts of the
machine gets to & fro motion
pirn package: This package contains only one yarn
& yarn is wound near parallel. Layers contain
continuously inner side of the package.
Advantage:
1. No need of flange.
2. Possible over-end withdrawal.
3. No change of yarn twist.
Disadvantage:
1. Cannot be side withdrawal.
2. This is not more stable.
