TVS Motor Company is a multinational motorcycle company headquartered
at Chennai, India. It is the third largest motorcycle company in India with a revenue of
over ₹15,000 crore (US$2.1 billion) in 2017-18. TVS Motor Company is also the 2nd
largest exporter in India with exports to over 60 Countries.
Framework for Employee Engagement
Employee engagement always plays an important role in the success and growth of an
organization.
At TVS, the engagement framework is called as ‘visibility impact matrix’. The meaning of
visibility is `engaging self or others in initiatives or activities which provide high adrenaline
rush but for a temporary period of time’- organizing birthday parties, offsite, hosting fun
events are some examples of conducting high visibility programs. In TVS a robust
succession planning program was created which gave good returns by impacting the
bottom-line.
Tools for Maximising Engagement
In TVS, the tool to maximize engagement is called as MAP (Mastery, Autonomy, Purpose)
which posits that ‘autonomy’ and ‘mastery’ give good control to the employees while
‘purpose’ shows employees why are they here and what exactly they are trying to achieve.
By giving MAP to the employees their levels of engagement can be increased.
Moments of Truth
‘Moments of Truth (MOT)’ can be used to determine the extent of engagement among
employees. It is basically a moment when customer interacts with a brand or uses it to
form or change its impression. MOT has various levels ranging from zero to three where
the third level indicates the highest level of brand advocacy .
Designing and Implementing Customized Reward & recognition Strategies
In order to increase engagement levels of the employees, it is desirable to design variety
of reward programs that felicitate employees for their contribution at various levels. The
6Ds beautifully summarize what engagement is for TVS – it is "Doing, Daily, Directly,
Deliberately, Diligently and Distributed"
Training And Development
TVS Motor gives training to all its employees on a rotational basis to equip them and
deliver the best. Learning Convention is conducted every year to promote and nurture
learning in the Company
The Company has established TVS-IQL for training the employees and making them
competent in the role they are performing along with training them to handle the next role
in line.
Safety Training involves road safety, first aid and fire safety, etc is conducted for the
employees, Use of learning, gamification and experiential case studies during the
employee selection process
Diversity and Inclusion
TVS believes an organization’s success depends on its ability to embrace diversity. When
people from diverse background work together, they naturally create an environment that
encourages innovation. Diversity encourages seeding and exchange of multiple ideas. TVS
have established regional diversity and are working on expanding gender representation
in our workforce to 25%.
Some simple yet fruitful practices by TVS :-
a. Uniform is standardized across all levels/grades.
b. Conducting comprehensive exit interviews
c. Use of auto ergonomics (welfare) to take into account the health index and working
style of an individual on the shop floor and focus on capability of the front staff.
d. Major initiatives were taken in the wellness segment. Periodical and annual health
check-ups for all employees, weight management, lifestyle coaching, wellness
consultation and workshops.
e. Introduction of health cards for all employees and their families.
f. Pre-employment medical check-ups were also conducted.
g. Fully-functional OHC (Occupational Health Centre) and special clinics for diabetes
mellitus, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia were opened. Outpatient consultation
and treatment and ophthalmological examination for truck drivers were also
planned.
h. Crèche for children was opened inside the premises.

The Company has one Labour Union representing the interests and welfare of all union
employees / workmen. Union elections are held once in 4 years as per the by-laws of the
Union. The Company maintains a good and cordial relationship with the Union.
100% of permanent employees in the workers grade are members of this Union.
Percentage of employees were given safety & skill up-gradation training in the last year.
