Key Information
SMCS - 7600
The "Machine Security System" (MSS) can be configured to recognize a set of authorized keys. This
list contains the keys that will disarm the MSS. The user can add and remove keys from this list.
Note: The maximum number of keys depends on the machine model.
The ECM can store five configuration parameters that identify each authorized key. These parameters
are listed below:
• Security type
• Description
• Access Level
• Expiration Date
• Security ID
The parameters are not stored in the Bluetooth key fob or mobile application. A complete list of MSS
functions that are available in the Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool are listed below:
• Enable and disable passcodes
• Enable and disable Bluetooth
• Add operator identifications (IDs)
• Edit operator IDs
• Delete operator IDs

• Configure grace time period
• Configure security bypass times
• Set security bypass times
• Create fleet configuration
Note: Refer to the Testing and Adjusting, "Key - Program" section for additional information on
authorized key management using the Cat ET Service Tool. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting,
"Scheduled Access - Program" section for additional information on security bypass times.
Note: A single key can be authorized on as many machines as desired. The following parameters can
be different on each machine: Description, Access Level, and Expiration Date. The ID will be the
same on all the machines
Note: The features of the MSS are supported in version 2017B or later of the Cat ET Service Tool.
Table 1
Example of Authorized Operator List
Security Type Description Access Level Expiration Security ID
Bluetooth Operator 1 Master "- - - - -" 20C38FD12DAE
Bluetooth Operator 2 Standard "- - - - -" 20C38FD12CB3
Passcode Operator 3 Standard "10/24/2016" 6547841
Security Type
The security type identifies the type of security access that is being used by the authorized operator.
There are two types of security identification:
• Bluetooth®
• Passcode
Description
You may choose a description of 11 characters or less for each key in the list of keys. There can be
multiple entries in the list with the same description. Create a description so that the key describes
either the owner of the key or the function of the user.
Note: Duplicate descriptions for the electronic keys are not advisable.
Access Level

You may assign one of two access levels to a key in the list of keys. The levels are either "Standard"
or "Master". Both access levels allow the key to disarm the system for operation. The master access
level also gives the user the ability to modify the settings of the MSS with the Cat ET Service Tool or
machine display.
The standard access level is for normal operation of the machine. The master access level should be
restricted to those persons that need to modify the settings of the Machine Security System.
Expiration Date
In certain applications, an expiration date may be assigned to any key in the list of keys. This
expiration date is defined in 6-hour intervals on a given date. The third entry in Table 1 contains an
expiration date. For all other keys in Table 1, the column with the expiration date is filled with "Dash
lines". "Dash lines" indicates that those entries do not have an expiration date. The Machine Security
System (MSS) has an internal clock. Once the internal clock has passed the expiration date for a key,
that key will no longer disarm the system. However, the entry will not be deleted from the list of keys.
A new expiration date can be set, or the feature can be disabled. A possible use for the expiration date
is used with a rental contract.
Note: If the machine is running when the expiration date and time are reached, the machine will
continue to run. When the machine is shut down and the grace period has timed out, the machine will
not be allowed to restart with the expired key.
Security ID
This field contains the operator passcode or the ID that is stored in the Bluetooth key fob or mobile
application.
For passcodes, this field will be four to seven numeric characters. Passcodes are utilized on some
machines in place of electronic keys. The passcode is a number assigned to an operator to allow
authorized operation of the machine.
For Caterpillar Bluetooth key fobs, this field will be a 12-digit alphanumeric identification key code
that matches the MAC address of the key fob. The MAC address is found on the key fob shipping box
or on the key fob housing.
For the Cat® myEquipment mobile application, this field will be a 12-digit alphanumeric
identification key code that matches the MDID of the mobile application.
The ECM uses this field to associate a key to the set of parameters in the list of keys. Entries in the
list may have the same information for the following items:
• Description
• Access level
• Expiration date
