Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects the
way we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and
make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence
through adulthood.
This is from the official mental health government website that provides reliable
information on the various issues of mental health. This is for anyone trying to research on the
topic.
This was last updated on April 5th 2019. This is funded from the federal government of
the USA. I will use the information on this website to obtain general knowledge on my topic and
use it as a reliable source to refer to in my paper.

Our Most Vulnerable Citizens. Vol. First edition, Abrams Press, 2017. EBSCOhost,

                                                                                                       2
The mental health system in America is hardly the front-burner issue it should be,
despite lip service about reform after each new tragic mass killing. Yet every American should
care deeply about fixing a system a presidential commission reported was in “shambles.” By
some measures, 20 percent of Americans have some sort of mental health condition, including
the most vulnerable among us―veterans, children, the elderly, prisoners, the homeless.
Levine wrote this book to reach the general audience to expose the dangers of mental
health in America and show how much it has had throughout our history.
Art Levine’s book was published by Harry N. Abrams on August 15th 2017. He is a
prize-winning contributing editor of the Washington Monthly and a former Alicia Patterson
Foundation Fellow. I found this book on EBSCOhost. This all means that this source can be used
as a credible resource. I will use this book in my essay by using some of the points and facts that
Levine uses in this book and will also use it to learn more about the topic of Mental Health.
Barile, Nancy. “The Importance of Mental Health Awareness in Schools.” Hey Teach!, 24 Oct.
2018, www.wgu.edu/heyteach/article/importance-mental-health-awareness-schools1810.html.
Mental health awareness is an important issue when it comes to education and schools.
Teachers and education professionals should recognize the impact that a student’s mental has on
learning and achievement.
This is an academic article that is trying to reach out to teachers, students, and parents of
students so that they can become aware of the impact on mental health on learning and
education. This is from the perspective of a well experienced teacher that shares her knowledge
and perspective on how mental health has affected her students.
                                                                                                         3
I know that this is a reliable source due to it fitting the requirements of CRAAP. The
article was written in 2018 which was one year ago, which means that it is still current and
usable for research. I can trust the author as she is an Award Winning Teacher with a M.A in
Education and has been teaching for over 2 decades. I will use this to provide another
professional perspective for my paper to use to support my thesis. Specifically, the issue of a
student and a teacher and how they worked through the student’s mental health.
Adelman, Howard S, and Linda Taylor. “Mental Health in Schools and Public Health.” Public
Health Reports (Washington, D.C. : 1974), Association of Schools of Public Health, 2006,
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1525289/.
Health policy and practice call for there to be more focus on the issues on mental health.
There has been an increase on focus on how mental health has been present in education. This
article focuses on the statistics that have been researched and what that indicates on the new
generation.
This article targets the general public and its purpose is to present the information given
from statistics that have been collected and proposes what needs to be done to address these
issues.
This article is credible as it satisfies the condition for CRAAP. The only issue was that it
was from 2006 which is a little farther back than I would like. However, upon further research
and looking into the article even further, the content is still relevant to today’s issues with mental
health. I plan to use this article as a non-biased source that clearly defines the problems found in
mental health and education. I can use this information to present the reader with the issues that
                                                                                                      4
my paper and thesis is trying to address.
Anderson, Meg, and Kavitha Cardoza. “Mental Health In Schools: A Hidden Crisis Affecting
Millions Of Students.” NPR, NPR, 31 Aug. 2016,
www.npr.org/sections/ed/2016/08/31/464727159/mental-health-in-schools-a-hidden-crisis-affect
ing-millions-of-students.
One in five kids living in the U.S shows signs or symptoms of a mental health disorder in
a given year. The problems those kids face can tie into major problems found in school. Mental
health is a growing issue when it comes to education.
Meg Anderson and Kathiva Cardoza are passionate in presenting the issues that are
presented in school that are related to mental health. In this article they follow a student by the
name of katie and her story of mental health in school. Then they go over what they believe
should be done to help minimize the effects of mental health on school.
This article satisfies the criteria of CRAAP and is a good resource for my paper. I am
planning to use it as another perspective on the issue and a way to find more information on the
topic.

This article takes a look into the benefits that come from teaching about mental health in schools.
                                                                                                       5
The article follows Hamilton Southeastern School District in Fishers, Indiana. They have been
slowing been introducing new methods of teaching about mental health to their students. What
they found was that there was significantly better results within the students and their
performance in school.
David Levine is a well established author for npr. He has written many articles on the topic. Npr
is also a reputable news source that is reliable to use for research. This was published on August
24 2018. This means that the article is current and usable to reference in my paper. I am planning
to use this article to present a real life case where a school did something to combat the issue of
mental health within students and the results it produced
“NAMI.” NAMI, 2019, www.nami.org/Learn-More/Public-Policy/Mental-Health-in-Schools.
This is the National Alliance on Mental Illness and their stance on mental health in
schools. This article on their website talks about more information on the issue and how a real
organization is taking the effort to combat the problem and inform the people about the issue of
mental health.
This is from the organization itself so there is not just one author. This website is a good
resource that talks about everything mental health. It dives into the research, statistics, and even
the legal issues that are involved. I am using this source to show an example of a real
organization that is currently trying to prevent the issue of mental health in students.
