Physics Teaching: Beyond Memorization

The document discusses challenges with traditional teaching methods in physics. While some students can get correct answers, they often lack a true understanding of underlying concepts. The author notes their own poor foundation from a traditional education focused on memorization without full comprehension. To overcome misconceptions, the document argues teachers must innovate and help students reconstruct conceptual frameworks, teaching physics as a creative endeavor rather than just theories and equations.

REACTION PAPER

I do agree to the article “Physics is a Creative Endeavour” . Teachers can be amazed to

learn that despite their best effort, students do not grasp fundamental ideas which was taught in

class. Though some of the students can get the correct answer but are only using correctly

memorized words. With this instance students failed to understand the underlying concepts. I still

remember when we were in high school most of our teachers use the traditional way of teaching

wherein the teacher is the one who shares their knowledge in front of the class, discussing the

content of the given textbook. This kind of teaching is very theoretical and when we join science

fair we often memorized equations and familiarized ourselves to sample problems without the full

understanding of the concepts behind the subject. Physics are often seen as abstract and rigid.

Now that I am now in the filled of teaching I’ve realized that my foundation of education

is very poor that’s why I have to help myself little by little as well as in the way of teaching that

we used to do. We must innovate and help students to reconstruct their conceptual framework so

that we can help them to overcome misconceptions. We need to teach students that physics

involves creative thinking.
