Côte d'Ivoire's Sustainable Food Security Plan

Côte d’Ivoire faces issues with sustainable food systems and food security as approximately 25% of the global population lacks reliable access to nutritious food. While cocoa exports support the economy, over 40% of Ivorians live in poverty and 13% face food insecurity. Conflict has also exacerbated these issues. Côte d’Ivoire works to improve agricultural productivity and resilience through initiatives like the National Agricultural Investment Programme but still requires assistance from foreign partners and organizations like the UN to achieve sustainable food security and eradicate hunger.

Issue : Sustainable Food System Including
Food Security and Eradication of Hunger
Committee : UNEA
Delegates : Hilda Ramadhani E. and Jenalyn F Pascua

Sustainable food system, has been a pressing international issues of our time. One of the key
point that included on sustainable food is food security. In broadest sense, it is defined as the condition
which all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to safe and nutritious food. It
may be difficult to comprehend but approximately 25% of the world’s population does not have food
security1. There are approximately one billion people who are hungry and 840 millions of people are
malnourished due to a lack of food security. There have been actions made by international and regional
organization as well the United Nations to combat this issue. The World Food Program (1961) is a
program aimed to ending world hunger by providing food for those in need, preparing for emergencies,
helping countries to deal with world hunger, helping aid in emergencies and support rural farmers to
compete in global market. The Millennium Development Global Goal, the goal to eradicate poverty
and hunger has three target which the third is to cut half of the number of people in the world who suffer
from hunger. In support to the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, these initiatives
generally promote actions that help address zero hunger, poverty, and responsible consumption and
production.
With over 100.000 hectares of wetlands, Côte d’Ivoire has great potential for rice growing, fish
farming and market gardening and the development of cocoa production for export and foreign
investment are the primary support of Côte d’Ivoire and make it one of the most prosperous of the West
African States but did not protect it from political turmoil. Poverty level is high (46.3% of population)
and at least 12.8% of the population considered food insecure Recently, food security in Côte d’Ivoire
and other countries in Africa has been worsened by conflict3. Hence, Côte d’Ivoire still need support
and assistance from foreign country as well regional organization and NGO to achieve Sustainable Food
System Including Food Security and Eradication of Hunger. To support sustainable and comprehensive
development of the agricultural sector, the Ivorian government developed the National Agricultural
Investment Programme, PNIA 2010-2015. It aimed to improve access and use of agricultural inputs;
increase mechanisation agricultural production; increase water management, consulting services,
training, research and foster sustainable agricultural production. The PNIA 2010-2015 supported by
African Development Bank, International Fund for Agricultural Development. United Nation
Development Programme, World Food Program and the Food and Agriculture Organization. In 2016,
the Ivorian government launched National Development Plan, PND (2016-2020) the third focus is PND
as vehicle for modern agriculture sector leading to improve productivity, food security and resilience.
One of assistance that Côte d’Ivoire got is from FAO cooperation, dominated by agricultural emergency
and rehabilitation assistance aimed at transforming agriculture into a productive and income-generating
sector that should enable the country to progress towards sustainable agriculture. Based on the result of
the National Development Plan (PND 2016-2020) and the National Agricultural Investment Programme
(PNIA 2017-2025)5, The focus of the country to ensuring food and nutrition security in the face of
climate change cantered on three priority areas. First, improving the productivity and resilience of agro-
forestry-pastoral and fishery, Enhancing the competitiveness of value chains and promoting effective
and inclusive healthy diets, Supporting the formulation, implementation and monitoring of national
policies, plans and programmes.
In addition to the various effort in the continuing fight to achieve Sustainable Food System
Including Food Security and Eradication of Hunger, Côte d’Ivoire:

1. Technological research and innovation that can enhance the efficiency and production level
in agricultural realm, moreover innovation of drought resistant food from local corps.

agricultural, forestry, fisheries, livestock, energy, climate and other relevant sectors to
ensure stronger coherence of food security and better policy alignment regarding national
and international corporation.
