Mechanization in
Agriculture
Dr. Abdul Qayoom Rajput
What is Agricultural Mechanization?
AGRICULTURAL MECHANIZATION involves the design, manufacture,
distribution, use and servicing of all types of agricultural tools,
equipment and machines. It includes three main power sources:
human, animal and mechanical with special emphasis on mechanical
(tractive power).
• Agricultural mechanization is the
process whereby equipments,
machineries and implements are utilized
to boost agricultural and food
production.
• It is the application of machineries,
equipments and implements in the day
to day farm activities to increase
marginal output in food production and
poverty eradication.
Types of Agriculture engineering
1- Manufacturing engineering is a discipline of
engineering dealing with
different manufacturing practices and includes
the research, design and development of
systems, processes, machines, tools, and
equipment.
Types of Agriculture engineering
2- Environmental engineering is the branch of
engineering that is concerned with protecting
plants from the effects of
adverse environmental effects, such as
pollution, as well as improving
environmental quality.
Types of Agriculture engineering --------------
3- Process engineering encompasses/
includes a vast/huge range of industries,
such as chemical, petrochemical,
agriculture, mineral processing, advanced
material, food, software development and
biotechnological industries.
Types of Agriculture engineering ----------
4- Soil and water conservation engineering is
the application of engineering principles to the
solution of soil and water management
problems.
The engineering problems involved in soil and
water conservation may be divided into the five
following phases; erosion control, drainage,
irrigation, flood control, and land clearing.
Types of Agriculture engineering --------------
5- Industrial engineering is a branch of
engineering which deals with the optimization
of complex processes or systems. Industrial
engineers work to eliminate waste of time,
money, materials, man-hours, machine time,
energy and other resources that do not
generate value.
Types of Agriculture engineering --------------
6- Irrigation engineering: Irrigation is the
controlled application of water to
croplands. Its primary objective is to create an
optimal soil moisture management for
maximizing crop production and quality while
at the same time minimizing the
environmental degradation inherent in
irrigation of agricultural lands.
Types of Agriculture engineering --------------
7- Drainage engineering: Drainage is
the natural or artificial removal of
surface and sub-surface water from
an area. Many agricultural soils need
drainage to improve production or to
manage water supplies.
Types of Agriculture engineering --------------
8- Computational engineering: deals with the
development and application of computational
models and simulations, often joined with high-
performance computing, to solve complex
physical problems arising in engineering analysis
and design as well as natural phenomena
Types of Agriculture engineering --------------
9- Postharvest engineering refers to the
sorting, packaging, temperature
management, transporting and temporary
storing of biological materials. Sorting and
grading operations guard product quality.
