Health/skill Related Components

This document defines and describes 11 health/skill-related components of physical fitness: 1. Agility, balance, body composition, cardiovascular endurance, coordination, flexibility, muscular endurance, muscular strength, power, reaction time, and speed. For each component, a brief definition is provided explaining what the component measures and how it relates to physical health and skill-related aspects of fitness.

agility
-Agilityor nimbleness is the ability to
change the body's position efficiently, and
requires the integration of isolated
movement skills using a combination
of balance, coordination, speed,
reflexes, strength, and endurance.

Balance
-an even distribution of weight
enabling someone or
something to remain upright
and steady.
body composition
-Body composition is the
proportion of fat and non-fat mass in
your body. A healthy body
composition is one that includes a
lower percentage of body fat and a
higher percentage of non-fat mass,
which includes muscle, bones, and
organs. Knowing your body
composition can help you assess
your health and fitness level.

Cardiovascular
endurance
-Cardiovascular endurance is how
efficiently your heart, blood vessels,
and lungs to supply oxygen rich
blood to working muscles during
physical activity (aerobic activity like
walking, running, cycling or playing a
sport) for a prolonged period of time
or for more than 90 seconds.
Coordination
-the organization of the
different elements of a
complex body or
activity so as to enable
them to work together
effectively.

Flexibility
-Flexibility refers to the range of
motion for a given joint. The
degree of flexibility that a person
has is influenced by muscles and
connective tissues, like ligaments
and tendons. Stretching is a form
of exercise that can lead to an
increase in flexibility.
muscular endurance
-Muscular endurance is the
ability of a muscle or group
of muscles to sustain repeated
contractions against a resistance
for an extended period of time. It
is one of the components
of muscular fitness, along
with muscular strength and
power.

Muscular strength
-Muscular strength refers to the
amount of force a muscle can
produce with a single maximal
effort. The size of
your muscle fibers and the ability
of nerves to activate muscle fibers
are related to muscle strength. It
is measured during muscular
contraction.
power
-possession of control,
authority, or influence over
others

reaction time
-Reaction Time – How quickly
an individual responds to a
stimulus. Reaction time is a
skill-related component of
physical fitness. Reaction
time can be tested in a variety
of ways.
speed
Speed – Performing a movement or covering a
distance in a short period of time. Speed is a skill-
related component of physical fitness. Speed can be
measured by timing a 40-yard dash, 30 meter sprint,
or the Illinois Agility Test.
