‘The distance between -5 and 0 is 5 units, so is the distance between 0 and 5 and
we write |-5| = 5, and [5]
Examplet: Whether you take two steps forward (+2) or two steps backward (~2),
you only took twe steps from your original location which was zero. So, the
‘absolute value of your movement is 2, and we write: |2| = 2 or |-2| = 2
Example 2: A com seed grew roots1foot deep below ground level and a stub that
extended 4 feet above ground level. What was the distance between the root of the
plant and the top of its stub?

1, Think: 4 feet above ground level is written as 4
1 foot below ground level is written as -1
Since distance is always positive, add the absolute value
of the two numbers to get the distance.
