World Culture Fair Project

Students will be given a group and a country to work with. Each student in the group will write 3

questions they want answered about that country. One of those questions must include a question about

the holiday that they celebrate during the winter months (November, December, January, and February

all count). Each student in the group must answer their own question in a paragraph from using

resources they found online or in books. A paragraph equals 5 sentences or more; double-spaced, size 12

font. Students will create a travel plan for their country and solve a problem of that country using Design

Thinking. Students will also make a slide for each of their questions; these slides will be combined into

one slideshow presentation. The next step is finding a craft for students to do and some sort of prop that

represents their country. The final product will be presented to different classes who choose to come

visit during the World Culture Fair.

Tasks and Requirements:

Paper Requirements:

1. Times New Roman font

2. Size 12 font

3. Doublespaced

4. 3 paragraphs for every person in the group

5. Each paragraph is AT LEAST 5 sentences

6. Sentences are written in your own words not copied from book/internet

a. this is called plagiarism and is in fact frowned upon :-(

7. Each person will turn in their paragraphs individually

Travel Brochure Requirement

1. Each person in your group will research and choose one or two places or important visiting sites

in your country.

2. Each person will create a visit plan for these sites. Write up a paragraph on why people should

visit and what they should do their. Make it enticing. Think commercial. Your job is to convince

why a traveler should go to the place you’ve researched.

3. Get together with the other members of your group and come up with an order for each place on

the visiting list. Your next job is to come up with transportation and accommodations at each

location and a price for each day of the trip. As well as a schedule for your trip.

4. Create a map using the Interactive Google MyMaps feature on your Google Drive account. As a

group create a Google Spreadsheet with the location of each place you’d like to visit. Miss

Hallett will go over how to do this and create the map itself in class.

5. Pick a month for your visit and research what average weather has been like in that month.

Create a graph charting temperatures in Fahrenheit and Precipitation levels for that month over

the course of 5 years. OR graph using the average temperature in Fahrenheit and precipitation in

each location of your trip using the average amounts.

6. Create a packing list. What’s the weather going to be like? What types of clothes and shoes

would be appropriate for the activities you’ve chosen? Is it likely to rain? Do I need an umbrella?

What is the air quality like? Are their health risks that people need to pack for?

7. Create one of the following as a group to advertise your trip

a. Prezi Presentation

b. Video Commercial

c. Advertising Poster
d. Travel Brochure

STEM Requirement:

1. As a group research a problem that your country specifically has encountered. Can be any sort of

problem… environmental, problem with cities, education, etc.

2. Research information about the problem. Why is it a problem? What are some causes? Narrow

down to one part of the problem to focus on and brainstorm possible solutions for it. Come up

with at least 10 ideas on how to fix the problem.

3. Choose one solution to the problem and prototype it

a. Prototyping it creating a quick mockup of the solution. This can be done with a drawing

or by using materials like Legos or random junk to make a simple model of the prototype.

4. Test on if your solution will work, revise it, and test it again. Ask other people to test it, teachers,

classmates, people in other grades.

5. Create one of the following to explain your idea and why your idea will fix the problem. Back it

up with reasons and information.

a. Commercial

b. Shark Tank pitch

c. Promotional video, poster, or podcast

d. Letter to a company/manufacturer presenting your idea

Prop Requirement

1. Bring in something that represents how your country celebrates it’s holiday or represents your

country

2. Food is allowed if it is a dish from your country/country’s holiday

Craft/Game Requirement

1. Find a SIMPLE craft that can be done in a short amount of time

2. Do a sample of your craft

3. Tell Miss Hallett the materials you need for your craft to be done by student’s visiting your

booth

a. IF YOU DO NOT GIVE MISS HALLETT A SUPPLY LIST FOR YOUR CLASS

WHEN ASKED YOU WILL NOT BE PROVIDED WITH SUPPLIES

4. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BRING IN YOUR OWN CRAFT

SUPPLIES. Materials will be provided by the school.

5. You can also do a simple game that is played in your country. This can not be a game like

Basketball or Baseball, but a simple children’s game that can be played in a confined space that

is unique to your country. Bonus if it has to do with how they celebrate their holiday.

You will do a practice run through of your presentation to your class before other students are invited in

to see it. Each student will be graded individually on their parts of the paper, graphs, and slideshow.

Work on knowing your stuff and not just reading it :-)

Use the checklist on the following page to track your work. Have Miss Hallett check off on the chunks

before your move on to the next one. There’s nothing more discouraging than to do all the research and

writing only to find you didn’t answer your research question and you have to do it again! Miss Hallett

will also help you with editing your paragraphs as they are being checked off. By the time you’ve

completed your work you should have an A-worthy project!
