Salvador
Salvador, the capital of Bahia and the first capital of Brazil, was founded in
1549 by the Portuguese. Today, it is one of the country's most important tourist
attractions. When the Portuguese first arrived in Salvador's bay, they marvelled at
the scenery, with its light blue sky, its crystal clear blue ocean, and its seventy-one
kilometers ofbeautiful rolling beaches adorned with coconut palms, and pale sands.

host. One person is all you need to know at a Brazilian party, so as soon as he sees

1. Que is used with the force of English "how ... " before descriptive words used
in exclamations.

2. When used with de before an infinitive, the pretérito perfeito ofacabar may
have the force of "to havejust" . .. or "to finish".
3. N egatives that follow verbs must be preceded by não (or another negativeJ.

6. The verb falar may be followed by em, de, or sobre, as in the following

7. As a rule when a Brazilian says 'eu sou de ... ,' 'ele é de ... ' the place name
that follows indicates the place where the individual was born and raised. If
the place of birth differs from the place the person grew up, an explanation is
in order, as in the case ofthe American in the dialog who says:

verb forms to indicate the length oftime that something has been going on.

FESTAS
A party is a party -- Brazilian parties are often quite different from the
traditional idea of a party in the United States. The term refers to a gathering
where music, dancing, eating and drinking take place, and where people of all
ages, including children, participate. There is no such thing as a Tupperware
Party, a Jewelry Party, or any business related event that will qualify under
the term festa.
The more, the merrier -- When inviting people for a party Brazilians do not
necessarily plan in advance on a certain n umber of guests. As the saying Uthe
more the merrier" goes, it is almost impossible to plan ahead since guests wiU
bring along other friends or relatives that may or may not be expected by the
hosts.
You get there when you get there -- Perhaps one of the greatest adjustments
an American has to make when living in Brazil is dealing with a totally relaxed
attitude towards time, especially when it comes to celebrations of social
occasions. Brazilian parties usually begin late in the evening, by American
standards. When the invitation is extended, it is not uncommon for only the day
of the party to be men tioned wi thou t men tioning the time. U sually, people will
say sábado à tarde, or sábado à noite. Only on formal occasions such as
weddings, and graduation ceremonies, where a ritual is involved, will exact
time will be stated. In any case, people may arrive anytime during the occasion
without having to apologize. Fifteen minutes to a half hour late is usually
considered «on time," and delays of two hours or more are not unusual.

Guests come first-- Since many households have a servant or servants to help
with the preparations of fancy, homemade hors d'oeuvres and sweets,
preparations usually begin several days prior to the occasion, and the food tends
to be elaborate and abundante Every effort is made to entertain the guests and
insure that they will have plenty to eat, and to drink, and that they will have a
lot of fun. There is no need to ask the hosts what to bring to the party. It is
understood that everything is being taken care of by the hosts. An offer to
bring something to the party may even offend a Brazilian hosts who might see
the offer as an interpretation oftheir incapability ofproviding for their guests.

Although some women are making their place in the male-dominated business
world, at parties, men and women often gather in separate areas, to engage in

Birthday Parties
As men tioned before, the list of guests ata birthday party almost aI ways
includes children. Birthday parties are different in Brazil because they are
familyevents. Adults and children alike celebrate. Children participate in the
adults' celebrations and the adults, parents, relatives, and friends, participate
in the children's. Depending on the family budget, the birthday celebration can
vary from a simple birthday cake and drinks to an elaborate affair with hot and
cold hors-d'oeuvres, andJor a meal.
U sually, finger foods are passed around on trays and towards the end, guests
gather at a buffet-style table with the birthday cake in the center surrounded by
homemade candies to sing ttHappy Birthday" and to cut the cake. Only after the
cake is served will people begin to help themselves to the attractively displayed
sweets.
The value (not the thought) is what counts-- Presents are opened as they come.
At children's parties, usually after the gift is opened it is put on the child's bed
for everyone to see. Presents are usually something of value. An inexpensive
gift, but one that is creative or useful from an American point ofview, may not
be appreciated in the same spirit, but rather be interpreted as in bad taste or
showing a lack of consideration for the friendship. Here are the lyrics for the
Happy Birthday song Brazilians sing at birthday parties at the same time that
they clap their hands to the tune.

Amizades
Favores e amizades--friendships are not taken lightly and are continuously tested
and validated. Brazilians often ask favors of a friend. Small things which require
little responsibility or time are usually not seen as favors but part of normal
interaction. When a big favor is asked, however, a true friend-- amigo verdadeiro
ou verdadeiro amigo-- is expected to go to great lenghts ofpersonal inconvenience
to accommodate a friend in need of a favor, be it small or big. Usually, refusal of
help by a friend immediately signals a lack of consideration and friendship, in
other words amigo falso.
If a friend shows up on your doorstep, at any time of day or night, he/she receives
an affectionate welcome no matter what plans you may have made previously or
how busy you may be. It is up to you to deal with the unexpected

For most Brazilians, it may be harder to say ««no" than to actually do the favor.
This is partly due to the Brazilians' innate concern for human beings and human
relations and partly due to a unique, virtually untranslatable Portuguese word:
jeito. Dar um jeito/jeitinho essentially means tfWhere there is a will there is a
way!". These cultural attitudes may seem different and yet are acceptable to many
foreigners. However, they can also be a bit tricky, especially if the favor asked
has to do with bending the rules at work or lending money. In the first case, the
favor could be the request for a visa or ajob; in the latter, it could mean a request
for borrowing money.
Verbal or written «urhank You" notes are not always seen as a sign of appreciation
by a friend. Instead it may be regarded as cold and impersonal interaction.
Brazilians show their friendship and appreciation of a favor in their excellent

Although the term gaúcho refers to people born in Rio Grande do Sul, it also
describes one particular Riograndense-the independent, courageous vaqueiro, or
cowboy, who dresses in oversized puffed up trousers called bombachas, tucked in
high, fancy leather boots that rattle with dangling silve r spurs, set off with a
colorful shirt, a broad leather belt with silver buckle, a wide- brimmed hat and a
bandana at the neck. In the winter, he may wear a poncho. His daily beverage is a

sipped through a bomba (a silver sipping strainer often decorated with rhine
stones). Rio Grande do Sul's traditional dance is called rancheira. This refreshing

The city of Porto Alegre is especially beautiful in the summer. The Guaíba River is
literally painted by the sunrays with splendid reddish colors producing the most
unforgettable sunsets. The Guaíba River links the city to the sea by a channel which
flows 330 miles to the south.

Brazilian families take all their meals together, especially in the smaller cities
and towns, where people work close to home.
During a meal Brazilians may drink água gelada, leite, and/or cerveja.
Children enjoy drinking refrigerantes, especially guaraná. When bottled
drinks are ordered during a meal, both a glass and the bottle are brought to the
table and they are served very well chilled, but without ice.
Some people work close enough to home to allow them to come home for the
principal meal of the day- the midday almoço- and to rest for a half- hour
afterwards, Le. tirar uma sesta.

Shopping in Brazil can be a lot of fun. However, there are a few things one
should know before buying something. Most stores have very strict return
policies. Some stores will not refund your money without a receipt and
others will not refund it at all in any circumstance. Exchanges are more
common, but there is always some kind of stipulation which prevents you
from exchanging anything. In other words, you bought it, you keep it.
Some stores have a very irritating habit of having the clerks follow the
customer at every turno They constantly ask ifthey can be of any assistance,
and insist carrying on the merchandise you are considering buying. To get
rid ofthem when they ask. A senhora já foi atendida? or Às suas ordens! or

Most stores have the saroe system ofpurchasing as in the lanchonetes. You
choose your merchandise, the clerk gives you a bill to pay at the cashier, and
then the cashier gives you a receipt for you to collect your item at a pick- up
station. This sometimes means standing in many lines, especially during
the holiday season.

The Brazilian government establishes a minimum salary per month, not per
hour. People are hired on salary scales based on their monthly wages - one,
two, three minimum salaries, and so forth.
Domestic help have, by law, the same rights as any working person in the
country. They carry a carteira de trabalho, work papers, which are signed by
the employer. The date when the employee began to work, the salary agreed
upon, adjustments made, and twenty paid vacation days are entered in this
documento This, in turn, gives the employee access to public health facilities
(lNPS) and the right to collect social security, upon retirement.
Since the quali ty of service may vary greatly from person to person, i t is wise to

Cultural Notes
Baby - si tters hired by the hour are rare in Brazil. The most common practice is to
hire a full-time nanny, or a young girl to look after the children. Since Brazil's labor
laws for hiring minors are very lax, and school attendance is not mandatory, low
income Brazilian children very often work to support themselves and to help their
families. Compassionate employers treat them as part ofthe family, and send them
to school, but they are expected to work afterwards and to be available seven days a
week, on a twenty-four hour basis. One might see these practices as unfair and
exploitative, but from a Brazilian point ofview, without this option, these children or
young people would be living in the streets, as thousands of them do, in the big ci ties.
Many young girls start out working with a family and stay on the job until they get
married.
