TOPIC: Dorothea Orem’s Theory
Summary of the report
Dorothea Orem’s Theory developed the Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing, which is
composed of three interrelated theories: (1) the theory of self-care, (2) the self-care deficit
theory, and (3) the theory of nursing systems. She also tackles about The Three Basic Nursing
Systems; these are the wholly compensatory nursing system, the partly compensatory nursing
system, and the supportive-educative system. This theory requires special knowledge , skills
which deals on meeting the client’s needs.
Learning’s
Dorthea Orem described her Theory of Self-Care as the performance or practice of activities that
individuals initiate and perform on their own behalf to maintain life, health and well-being. She
sets the definition of self-care deficit as Self-care Deficit delineates when nursing is needed it
also explains that deficit defends on how much care is needed by the patient. According to her
nursing is required to respond towards the patients’ needs it shall provide all the needs of the
patients but with the certain limits and in accordance to their inability to function. Dorethea
Orem also describes the theory of nursing systems as the product of a series of relations between
the nurse and his/her patients. This system is activated when the client’s therapeutic self-care
demand exceeds available self-care agency, leading to the need for nursing. Then the three basic
nursing systems. The wholly compensatory nursing system is represented by a situation in which
the individual is unable to engage in those self-care actions requiring self-directed and controlled
ambulation and manipulative movement or the medical prescription to refrain from such
activity. Persons with these limitations are socially dependent on others for their continued
existence and well-being. Then the partly compensatory nursing system is represented by a
situation in which both nurse and perform care measures or other actions involving manipulative
tasks or ambulation. The patient or the nurse may have the major role in the performance of care
measures. While the supportive-educative system also known as supportive-developmental
system, the person is able to perform or can and should learn to perform required measures of
externally or internally oriented therapeutic self-care but cannot do so without assistance.
Importance to Nursing
The importance of this in our selected course which is nursing, Is that this basic
knowledge in some theory and theorist will help us to fully understand what the true purpose of
nursing. Also it will help us to build our own philosophy in life that will keep us moving and
striving even further to reach our dreams. It will also help us in dealing nursing practices by
means of guiding the proper way of giving attention or simply the needs of the patient. In
additional it will help us to understand why and how those practices will help us to perform well
in the present establish nursing practices and what are the required key elements required in this
theory.
