Most For Metal Forming Applications

The document discusses MoST, a PVD solid film lubricant coating for metal forming tools. MoST provides a low coefficient of friction and high hardness, improving tool performance through increased lubricity and wear resistance. It can be applied to resist common failure modes and reduce friction and die maintenance needs. MoST is recommended for various metal forming applications including dry forming and stainless steel forming.

MoST ® for Metal Forming Applications

A Revolutionary PVD
Solid Film Coating for the
Metal Forming Industry
MoST ® is a PVD solid film lubricant coating for the metal forming industry which
provides dramatic improvements in tool performance. MoST ® exhibits an ultra low
coefficient of friction (0.01 - 0.06), lower than that of Teflon® or graphite. What
makes MoST ® different from other solid film lubricants is its hardness (2000 Hv
minimum), which is similar to that of PVD TiN . MoST ® provides a combination of
lubricity and wear resistance not currently available from any other coating or sur-
face enhancement technique.

Benefits of MoST ®
The unique combination of wear resistance and lubricity of MoST ® dramatically
prolongs tool life. Apply MoST® to resist adhesive and abrasive wear, which are
common failures modes for metal forming tools. MoST ®’s lubricity reduces the
friction between tool and workpiece material minimizing or eliminating the need
for lubricants and post-forming cleaning operations. MoST ®’s superior resistance
to galling significantly reduces the amount of die maintenance-related downtime
while producing better part finishes.

Optimum performance of MoST ® is achieved at operating temperatures below

450ºC (842ºF). For dry forming applications, use MoST ® on the following work-
piece materials: carbon steel, alloy steel such as HSLA, pre-painted, coated, or
galvanized steel, stainless steels, aluminum alloys and copper alloys.

Recommended Applications for MoST ®

• Dry Forming • Forming Galvanized and Pre-painted Steel
• Pierce Punches • Hydroforming
• Cold Heading/Forming Punches • Powder Metal Compaction
• Forming/Drawing Stainless Steel • Fine Blanking Tools
