“A Brahmana should study the sacred Vedas without any personal motives” is a hoary saying which inculcates
the study of the Vedas along with the auxiliary branches of Phonetics, Grammar and Astrology to the seeker
of truth. The Vedas depict different modes of Sadhana keeping the general well-being and overall progress of
the mankind as a whole. All the types of practices and initiation depend on the prerequisite knowledge of
time and eras. The Astrological part of the Vedas inculcate about the suitable time for the performance of
practices preached in the Vedas (Srauta) as well as the practices preached in the Smritis (Smarta). Together
with this, it also tries to depict and warn us about the impending dangers of our lives wrought by our previous
sins, and suggests suitable remedies for the same. With this view, the Astrological studies are pertinent and
necessary for the performance of enjoined acts, warding of impending obstacles and prosperity as well. In the
science of Astrology, the Hora Sastra of Varaha Mihira and Hora Krishniya of Krishnacharya occupy a special
place. The Prasna Marga suggests apt solutions to routine problems of our life.

Year of Publication : 2013

The Dvaita Vedanta has made unique contribution to Indian Epistemology. Most of the Indian scholars were
of the opinion that the Madhva Epistemology had been influenced by Nyaya system and hence lacks creativity
in thoughts. This is absolutely a wrong concept. Dvaita system is totally based on ancient and authoritative
system of logic - Brahma-tarka of Narayana, which is condensed by Lord Vedavyasa in his texts. Definition of
knowledge and delineation on the instruments of knowledge is a very interesting discussion in Dvaita
philosophy. Sri Jayatirtha Swamin wrote a valuable commentary on Pramanalakshana-prakarana, which
focuses light on Madhva Epistemology as well as on other branches of Indian philosophy. Sri Vijayindratirtha
Swamin contributed Bhava-vivaranam sub-commentary on Pramanalakshana-teeka which was till now
unpublished and unknown to the society of Madhva tradition. Sri Vijayindratirtha Swamiji has contributed
more than 104 works in different branches of Indian philosophy and Madhva tradition - “Chaturadhika-shata-
grantha-praneta”. Vidwan P.S. Sheshagiri Acharya critically edited this text with two manuscripts.

Editor : Dr. Mani Dravid
Year of Publication : 2013
Pages : 14 + 90
Rs. 100/-
The ‘Dwa Suparna’ shruti of Mundakopanishad, interprets the difference between Jiva (live) and Brahman.
Both are living on a tree (human body) and involved in each and every activities of the body. The Jiva eats the
fruits of Karma and Brahman is shining always without eating the fruits (Karma-phala) in human body. The
narration of the shruti is crystal clear that these different attributes of Jiva and Brahman carries difference
between them.
Even though Advaita Vedantins accept the Bheda in non-liberal stage (Samsara-avastha), they deny difference
in liberal stage (Mukti). According to the Advaita, the shruti interprets Vyavaharika-bheda (Mundane
difference) between Jiva and Brahman.
This text examines the interpretation of Dvaita Vedantins and explains the stand-point of Advaita Vedanta.
This manuscript was available in our library and I have assigned this work for editing to Prof. Mani Shastri of
Chennai. Dr. Mani Dravid is a well-known scholar of Poorva-meemamsa and Advaita Vedanta. He has taken
pains in preparing critical edition of this text.

MEGA PROJECTS OF
POORNAPRAJNA SAMSHODHANA MANDIRAM
Project No. I
DVAITA VEDANTA KOSHA
A Kosha in Sanskrit is the equivalent to a detailed Dictionary of meanings and
references to terms used for standard reference works by which a students can
understand what is precisely meant by the author contextually. The Sanskrit language is
not only rich in a variety of meanings associated with the usage of words, but also has a
precisely defined grammar aiding the correct interpretations. Therefore, usage of
technical terms by philosopher would become unclear and imprecise, unless a Kosha is
referred to by the student.
The three famous Vedanta schools in Indian Philosophy have constantly interacted
with each other in the form of disputation by scholars, writings of polemical works and
their refutation etc. Dvaita school which came last historically has the benefit of some
the greatest thinkers and logicians, who have composed great works like Tatparya
Chandrika, Nyayamruta etc. The interpretation of philosophical terms in such works
though apparent to the accomplished scholar of Dvaita Vedanta, can be difficult for
students. Advaita and Vishishtadvaita schools have already published their Koshas,
giving a great advantage in the study and understanding of those systems. It is now
necessary that the students of Dvaita Vedanta should also be provided with such a
Kosha.
While undertaking this work, we intend to achieve the following objectives, by taking
note of results already achieved by other Koshas and further improvements there on :
i. The Kosha will be limited to words having special philosophical or
interpretational significance. Common words which may have no special
significance and are used for elaboration of meanings could be conveniently
omitted.
ii. There will not only be equivalent words describing the meaning, but usage of
the same word in more than one sense according to context will also be
interlinked with indices.
iii. The word meanings will be given in equivalent words/descriptive sentences in
Kannada and English also, in addition to Sanskrit.
iv. Descriptive annotations will be provided, when there are significant differences
in the meanings of the same word/s used in different contexts by the same
author/school or by different authors/schools.
v. In each case, bibliographical references will be provided by which the student
can look into the original texts where the usage/meaning is noticed along with
commentaries/sub-commentaries thereon.
The compact edition of Kosha which is expected to deal with approximately 2000
words, will be around 2000 pages, in 4 vlumes. The project will be completed within
31st of March 2015. After completion of the first phase work we will prepare detailed
Dvaita Kosha volume in near future.
