INTRODUCTION
Social enterprises are Entrepreneurial Organizations with the core principle of
creating social innovation. It is globally known engaging profit activities and has huge
impact on uplifting life quality of vulnerable and marginalize community. it is
considered as social or welfare programs for it is establish through foundations,
corporate social responsibility, and government funding or civil society and
international donors (Philippine Institute for Development studies, 2017).It has
existed for many centuries and have gained prominence in the western economies in
1970’s (Poon 2011). In the Philippines context, Social Entrepreneurship is known
building profit/non-profit organization and create social value, its main role in
rehabilitating Marawi City primarily donating goods, commodities, and services to the
poor. Some Organizations provides financial support to the Maranaos who wants to
recover their business.
There are types of social entrepreneurships identified that might be proven existed in
Marawi City at present which will be discussed and specifically elaborated on the
latter part of this paper, these are Community projects, Non-Profit Organizations,
Cooperatives, Social Enterprises, and Social Purpose Organizations. Each of them has
important role on contributing the Status of Social Entrepreneurship in Marawi City
which the main focus to be determine in this study. Governments and other
organizations already conducted planning of different service programs and started
rehabilitating Marawi, there are also other organizations offer financial supports and
donations to Marawi war victims that plays role inside Marawi social
entrepreneurship status which is not fully determined yet.
The goal in conducting this study is to give readers correct information about the
aforementioned topic. These study also tries to figure out the reasons and factors
affecting the current status, through gathering informations on books, social media
articles, pages, news, etc. And conducting personal interviews and surveys of the
involved respondents.
Background of the study
Marawi City, Lanao Del Sur is the “ Only Islamic City in the Philippines” was
called before as Dansalan and was the capital of the province of Lanao Del Sur. The
economy of the City is largely based on agriculture of rice and corn, and exporting of
various crafts among many things. They also manufacture hollow-blocks, goldsmith,
and blacksmithing. The possible businesses to be establish in Marawi City are rubber
processing, Marawi hotels, exporting of halal foods, cold storage facilities,
oleo-chemical products, processed foods and apparel, jewelry such as pearls and cloth

Tragic history of war in Marawi City drawn out traumatic image on its home, culture
and people especially children.”War have destroyed huge part of Marawi where the
Central District become the main battle area for 153 days which main bulk of
commercial, educational, health religious, cultural infrastructure and facilities, and big
number of huge concrete residential buildings established. Cost of destruction
estimated 50 billion pesos”. (News.mb.com.ph).
Most of them especially the IDP’s needs financial support from the Governments
and other organizations. Social Entrepreneurs as agents of change often see this as an
opportunity to Adopt business solutions to social problems where social
entrepreneurship begins “ being define as the process of pursuing innovative solutions
to address social, environmental and economic problems in a variety of ways”
(seethechange.ca).
Statement of the problem
This study aims to determine the Status of Social Entrepreneurship in Marawi City, to
determine and compare status of its past and present especially where most businesses
destroyed by war, it also aims to to know what are the Governments actions and
programs towards these, and to identify other private organizations who participated
in the rehabilitation of Marawi which contributed big factor on Marawi’s Social
Entrepreneurship. The problem also aimed to answer the following questions:
1. What are the factors affecting the Status of Social Entrepreneurship in Marawi
City?
2. What are the government actions and programs and how it contributes to its
present status?
3. How Social Entrepreneurship affects the Marawi community in terms of its
economy and social well-being?
4. Importance of Social Entrepreneurship in Marawi City.
5. How social entrepreneurship contributes to the well being of Marawi people
especially the IDP’s.
6. What type of social enterprises greatly contribute social upliftment of Marawi
city?
7. Who are those social entrepreneurs engage in rehabilitating Marawi City?
8. How Marawi Citizens react towards present social entrepreneurship in terms of
its importance, community involvement, business ventures and activities, and
social responsibility.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study focuses on the status of Social Entrepreneurs in Marawi City. It is
important to tackle this issue to compare the differences and gaps on Social
Entrepreneurial Status of its past and present. The following are the ones that will be
benefited on this study.
Marawi people in this study they will know the status of their social enterprises and
the determinant factors affecting it. Being a citizen of Marawi City it is their concern
to know about this issues.
Students who wants to know about the current status of Marawi City especially after
the siege and might conduct research relating about this topic.
Business establishments that exist in Marawi City since they are also venturing
business, it is their concern to know the factors and status of business around them.
Business persons wishes to venture social enterprises in Marawi City, they must
know the status of the place where they establish their business. They might conduct
research to determine the factors which could affect their business in the future.
Other researchers who might conduct a study and research about Marawi relating
this topic.
LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
This study focuses on Status of Social Entrepreneurship in Marawi City and the
contributing factor of the said topic. Social Enterprises and other types of social
purpose Organizations that are ventured, which can be a major determinant factor on
the obtained result at the end of the study. Furthermore this also include on both
non-profit and for profit (Government and Private Organization) social enterprises
that have caused impacts on the community’s well-being. Other types of business /
Organizations present in Marawi City is not included in this study.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Social Entrepreneur is a person who pursues novel applications that have the
potential to solve community-based problems. They are the one who is willing to take
risk and effort to come up with positive changes in society through their initiative.
They can be considered as agent of change.
Social Entrepreneurship is a process of social value creation in which resources are
combined in new ways to meet social needs, stimulate social change, or create new
organizations.
Social Enterprise an organization that applies commercial strategies to maximize
improvements in financial, social and environmental well-being.
Value of creation it is a manner why business is created for. The intention why the
Organization was formed.
Firm characteristics affects the firm performance towards social aspects and on
Organization financial performance.
Employees they are people employed to work for an organization to do a specific job.
Residence are people living in the community of Marawi.
Managers are the one who takes control or manages the firm or an organization.
