Table 1. Updated Estimates of Power Plant Capital and Operating Costs

This document provides updated cost estimates for various power plant technologies in terms of overnight capital cost, fixed operating and maintenance costs, and variable operating costs. It shows that capital costs can range from around $900/kW for a conventional combined cycle natural gas plant to over $8,000/kW for biomass and some geothermal technologies. Operating costs also vary significantly by technology. Coal plants have relatively low variable costs but higher fixed O&M costs compared to natural gas technologies. Renewable technologies like wind and solar have no fuel costs but higher capital expenditures.
