Reporting Uncertainties Practice

1. The document provides examples of incorrectly reported uncertainties and asks the student to round the answers or uncertainties so they match the number of significant figures. 2. It asks the student to calculate and report percent uncertainties for several measurements and quantities. 3. It asks the student to calculate and report absolute uncertainties for several measurements and quantities when given the measurement and percent uncertainty. 4. It provides tips for matching uncertainties and significant figures in an experiment, such as rounding measurements to the same place value as the uncertainty.

Reporting Uncertainties Practice

1. The following answers and uncertainties are stated incorrectly. Round one or both parts so that they are
correct. Assume that the answer portion has already been worked out to the correct number of sig figs.

a. 4.5 + 0.3726 g = ______________________

b. 153 + 1.765 m3 = ______________________

c. 82.3 + 3 J = ______________________

d. 0.63 + 0.00743 s = ______________________

e. 1.78 x 10-3 + 6.424 x 10-5 L = ______________________

f. 1295 + 0.65 J = ______________________

2. Calculate and report percent uncertainties for the following.

a. 20.1 + 0.1 L = ___________________

b. 1115.4 + 0.005g = ___________________

c. 52800 + 980 dm3 = ___________________

3. Calculate and report absolute uncertainties for the following.

a. 3.79 g + 0.73% = __________________

b. 82.5 m2 + 5.2 % = __________________

c. 0.79 s + 8.1 % = __________________

d. 421 mol + 1.35% = __________________

e. 679800 nm + 4% = __________________

Tips for MATCHING uncerts and sig figs in an experiment.

1. Work out the answer to the experiment (experimental value)

2. Round it to the correct number of sig figs based using the rules for sig figs.
3. Based on the instruments you used, work out the absolute uncertainty to one sig fig.
4. If needed, round the experimental value to the same RIGHTMOST place value as the
uncertainty.
