A. Review
“Before we start, can you recall
something about our lesson last
meeting?”
“Last meeting, we took up the Maranaw
epic titled “The Good Prince Bantugan.”
“Yes! What is the epic about? ”
“This is a story about a legendary hero,
Prince Bantugan, who exhibits qualities
admired in a person, in addition to his
great fighting ability and mental
alertness.”
“Very good! Why did the people like
Prince Bantugan?”
“Prince Bantugan was a handsome, kind
and brave warrior. Because of his
2
bravery, no one dared attack the
kingdom of Bumbaran which kept the
“While Prince Bantugan was away, what people safe. “
did the king plot against him?”
The envious king prohibited everyone in
the kingdom from speaking with Prince
Bantugan .Whoever dared to speak to
Prince Bantugan would meet his death.
“That’s right! What is the lesson of the
story?” It is the bravery of Prince Bantugan. With
his bravery, he made tough decisions,
took action without wasting time and
faced uncomfortable situations
confidently. His bravery helped the
people in the kingdom of Bumbaran to
live peacefully.
“That’s awesome! When a person
becomes braver, he becomes more
capable of taking action and handling the
things that come his way. Who has
another idea?” In addition, the jealous feelings of the
king of Bumbaran against Prince
Bantugan led to his impulsive or reckless
decisions, destructive behavior and
cause the king to act in ways that were
selfish and controlling.
“Very well said! It seems that all of you
learned from our last meeting’s
discussion.”
B. Motivation
(Students listen to the instruction)
“This time we will play “Peeling the
Cabbage Game”. Your task is to listen to
the music that will be played from the
cellphone. Then you will pass the
cabbage around while the music is
playing. When the music stops, the one
holding the cabbage will take off a layer,
will read aloud the words found there and
will answer/do what is asked. The game
will continue until all layers of the
cabbage shall have been peeled. We will
do this in three minutes. Is that clear “Yes, Ma’am!
class?”
Challenges :
“Great! So let’s start.” 1.Act it out :
“Break a leg.”
2. Draw it on the board:
“When pigs fly.”
3. Draw it on the board:
“You’re the apple of my eye.”
4. Draw it on the board:
“Don’t let the cat out of the bag.”
5. Act it out:
“Put your foot in your mouth.”

C. Presentation
“Class, from what you just did, what have
you observed from the expressions The phrases or expressions seemed not
given?” acceptable in the real context and the
meanings are hidden.
“That is correct! Can you mention again “break a leg.”
those expressions?” “when pigs fly “
“put your foot in your mouth”
“you’re the apple of my eye”
“Don’t let the cat out of the bag.”
“Very good! Are those expressions
actually happened the way they are
being described? “No, Ma’am!
Does the expression “put your foot in
your mouth.” mean you will really put “No,it is improper and unsanitary to put
your foot in your mouth? our foot in our mouth.”
Besides, you don’t have to break your
leg on purpose, right? “That’s true, Ma’am.”
“ Have you actually seen a flying pig?” “We haven’t, Ma’am!”
“Definitely! What do you think are those
expressions?” “I think Ma’am, it’s a group of words that
when taken together has different
meaning from the individual meaning of
each word. The phrase doesn’t really
mean what they say literally.”
“Very good! What else?” “The meaning of those expressions
cannot be inferred from the meanings of
the words that make it up.”
Correct, for instance, the expression
“break a leg” has nothing to do with the
actual physical action of breaking a leg .
What it actually mean is to "do your
best".
(Teacher will reveal the meaning of other
given expressions. )
“What do you think is our lesson for this “It’s about a phrase that has another
day?” meaning.”
“Very good! You have an idea. Any other “It’s about figures of speech?!”
answer? (ideas will come out.)
“Exactly, you got it right! All your answers
are correct. Each of those expressions
has a connection to the topic that we will
discuss today –Idiomatic Expressions.”
“I want you to read on the board the
objectives of our lesson for you to focus
on our target concepts.”

another activity.
D. Activity
“This time we will play the game “Minute
Mystery”. I am going to group you into
four (4) with one representative. I have
here four (4) Magician’s hats. Each hats
contains a card which will show a
sentence that uses an idiomatic
expression derived from the epic “The
Good Prince Bantugan”. I want you to
study and discuss among your group
members the meaning of the underlined
expression. I will only give you five (5)
minutes to work on your task. Did you (Students listen to teacher’s instruction)
get it, class?”
“Yes Ma’am!”
Mystery puzzle #1
1. Despite Prince Bantugan’s bravery
and power, he remained a backseat
driver, because he was not involved in
running the kingdom.
Mystery puzzle #2
2. Whenever Prince Bantugan would
suggest something, his brother, the king
would say, “My way or the highway?”
Mystery puzzle #3
3. Even with this treatment, the prince
never missed the boat and tried to
defend the kingdom when opportunity
comes.
Mystery puzzle #4
4. When he needs to act, he never
delays and say ” Let’s hit the road.”
(The student’s will carry out the activity in
E. Analysis 5 minutes)
“This time, let us analyze the underlined
expressions and check your answers.”
“What have you noticed from the
underlined expressions? “ “I observed that the group of words
convey different meaning from the actual
meaning of each word if taken
separately. “
5
“That’s correct! Any other idea?” “It seems the meaning of those
expressions can be taken figuratively
and sometimes they can be
misunderstood if taken literally.”
“How did you arrive at the meanings?” “Ma’am, the words in the sentence serve
as our clue to get the meaning of those
underlined expressions. We also
consider that they are words or phrases
that aren't meant to be taken literally.
“What do you call those group of
words?” “We call them Idiomatic expressions.”
“Based on those examples what is your
idea of idiomatic expression?” “It is an expression that cannot be
defined from the meanings of its words
but has a separate meaning of its own.”
May I call a representative from each
group to interpret or give the meaning of
the underlined idiomatic expressions” (A representative from each group will
give the meaning of the underlined
expression as used in the sentence.)
“What do you mean by the underlined
expressions in the first sentence?” “In sentence number 1, the underlined
expression shows that Prince Batugan is
like a passenger of a vehicle who has no
control of the situation and just follows
wherever the driver is heeding. So, the
expression “backseat driver” means
having no control of the situation.”
“Very good! It shows that Prince
Bantugan has no authority or influence in
leading the people of Bumbaran except
the king. What about in sentence number “The expression “my way or the highway”
two (2)?” shows the king’s attitude that he is
always right and that if Prince Bantugan
would not obey then he could
just leave the kingdom.”
““Well, that’s correct! Prince Bantugan
had no choice but to agree with the
king’s opinion because if he would
disagree, the king advised him to leave.
Let’s try to analyze the expression used
in number three (3)?” “Ma’am I think “missed the boat” means
losing the chance or opportunity to do
something.”
“Yes! Did Prince Bantugan
fail to act in time in defending the
kingdom?” “No, Ma’am! He never missed the boat to
defend the kingdom.”
“Definitely! “What about the last
expression used?” “It means that we need to start doing
something.”
6
“Very good! You have an idea, any other
answer?” “Let’s hit the road means to leave or to
start your journey.”
Absolutely! That’s another way of saying
“let’s begin our journey.” “Yes, Ma’am, Now we know the other
way of saying it.”
“Very Good! Now, let me show you the
correct meaning of those underlined “
expressions .
ANSWERS
1. Backseat driver - has no controlling
influence.
2. My way or the high way - the attitude
of believing that one is always right and (The groups check their answers)
that those who disagree should not
meddle.
3. Missed the boat - to fail to take
advantage of an opportunity.
4. Hit the road - to begin a trip or do
something.
“That’s correct. Give an example of
simple idiomatic expressions that you
know?” “apple of the eye, raining cats and dogs,
and break a leg.”
“Let’s analyze one of your examples”.
”Apple of the eye”, what does it mean?” “It’s not the apple that is placed on one’s
eye but I think it is a person that is being
the center of attraction.”
“What did you notice to the meaning?”
“It’s far from the words used in the
expression.”
“Wonderful! You are all bursting of ideas!
All your answers are correct!
Now ,if you have questions ,please feel

Idiomatic expressions are defined as an discussion)
expression whose meanings cannot be
inferred from the meanings of the words
that make it up.In other words, idioms
don't mean exactly what the words say.
They have, however, hidden meanings .
For example, the idiomatic expression
"to kick the bucket" has nothing to do
with the physical action of kicking a
bucket with your legs, which is part of
your body. The idiom "to kick the bucket"
means "to die". So, an idiomatic
expression carries a figurative meaning,
not a literal one. That is, it carries a
meaning that cannot be understood just
by the literal meanings of the words that
make it up. Learning idiomatic
7
expressions increases our vocabulary .
They can amplify messages in a way
that draws readers in . They make
language more interesting. They help
create mental image or picture that
expresses the message more clearly.
“Now, I will show you some examples of
commonly used idiomatic expressions .”
(Students listen to teacher’s additional
inputs of the lesson)

idiomatic expressions.)

Idioms used at birthday.
Any question,class?
F. Abstraction
“Class, did you have fun with our
activities and discussion?”
None, Ma’am!”
“That’s good to know! Again, what is our
lesson all about? “
“It’s all about idiomatic expressions.”
“Now, based on our discussion, define
idiomatic expression in your own words?”
(Teacher calls a volunteer to answer.)
“It is a phrase or expression
whose meaning cannot be understood
from the ordinary meaning of the words
in it. “
8
“Very good! You have an idea, any other
answer?” “It is about a group of words which, when
taken together, have a different meaning
from the individual meanings of each
word.”
“That’s right! Idiomatic expressions are
phrases which we use in everyday
language that do not make sense
literally but we understand what they
mean.
Now, can you tell me why is learning
idiomatic expression important ?” “It makes the message interesting. It
simplifies the negative message through
using pleasing words in an idiom.”
“That’s right! Any other idea?”
“Idiom is the best way of describing
situations and expressing what we want
to say. “
“Very good! What else?”
“Idioms make the language more
colorful. and increase our vocabulary.
They serve as an image or mental
picture to express something more
vividly and often more briefly.
“Wonderful! It seems that you digested
the lesson very well.”
