Should College Degree Be A Requirement For Senator: To: Romnick Pablo Bistayan By: Mirari Tabian

This document discusses whether a college degree should be required for Senators in the Philippines. While a degree could help elevate the quality of governance, it may also limit some citizens' rights to run for office. Experts can advise Senators on technical issues instead. More important than a degree is a leader's grasp of social and economic issues and solid leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Currently, there are no education requirements for Senators, though many have law or business degrees.

SHOULD COLLEGE DEGREE BE A REQUIREMENT FOR

SENATOR
Some of the pilipino assumed that all politicians that are running for Senator are smart,
intelligent, kind and etc. So, they can’t decide if who will be their Senator. Some of us are being fooled by
the past Senators and we don’t want that they will do it again and we can’t believe them anymore. Some
of the Senators are “MANDURUGAS”. So for me, we need Senators who will to us to be a good example
of being a good Pilipino. We need Senator who is smart, intelligent and not “MANDURUGAS”. He or she
must know his or her priority as a Senator or a leader to our country.

Imposing this educational qualification might elevate the quality of service in the
Philippines. However, as former Chief Justice Reynato Puno said during a press briefing,
imposing college degree as a requirement for senators is somehow anti-democratic on the
ground that it limits the right of some Filipinos without college degree to run for office. The
senators can call on experts on economic, social, scientific and technological matters if required,
so the senators themselves don’t have to be highly educated. A leader having a good grasp of
social and economic issues facing the electorate is more important than having a college degree
because a congresswoman said that none of the classes she took in college were relevant to her
job.

There are no specific requirements regarding education or training, but many senators
have experience in the law or business, and they often hold at least a bachelor's degree. Solid
leadership, communication, and organizational skills are vital for anyone who wishes to be
elected senator.
