Oxytetracycline is a tetracycline antibiotic administered topically as an ointment to treat superficial ophthalmic infections through its mechanism of binding to bacterial ribosomal subunits to inhibit protein synthesis and cell growth. It is contraindicated in those with hypersensitivity to tetracyclines, children under 8 years old, renal damage, pregnancy or lactation due to potential side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, photosensitivity or nephrotoxicity. Special precautions should be taken with the elderly, those with renal or hepatic impairment, and children under 12 years old.
