Highway Safety: Xaadt TX NX A

The document discusses methods for calculating accident rates at intersections and highway sections. The intersection accident rate (Ai) is calculated by dividing the number of accidents by the product of time in years and annual average daily traffic. The highway section accident rate (As) similarly divides the number of accidents by time in years, annual average daily traffic, and the length of the highway section. Two example problems demonstrate how to use the formulas to determine accident rates at an intersection and highway section given traffic and accident data.

Highway Safety

Accident Rates at Intersections, Ai

Nx1,000,000
Ai 
Tx365 xAADT

Where :
N  number of accident occurences
T  time frame of analysis in years
AADT  annual average daily traf fic

Example Problem:

An intersection has a record of following number of accidents for 5 years:

Fatal = 8
Injury = 63
Property Damage = 136

If the AADT for this particular intersection is 3,010, determine the accident rate per million entering
vehicles.

Accident Rate at Highway Section, As:

Nx100,000,000
As 
Tx365 xAADTxL

Where :
N  number of accident occurences
T  time frame of analysis in years
AADT  annual average daily traf fic
L  length of highway section in km

Example Problem:

A 5-km highway section has a recorded number of accidents of 550 in 5 years. If the average daily traffic
of this highway section is 12,480, determine the accident rate per 100 million vehicle-kilometer.
